New Cowboy Broderick Jones Is A Lot Better Than People Think | Film Review

Jones is going to be a much better player a year from now, and I think some people are going to look pretty silly for writing him off already.

The Cowboys have better coaching, better development, and a better environment around him. Give them a year to work with him and get him ready, and I think you're going to see a significantly better player.

And yes, I agree with the video. He's better than most people think. The funniest part is how much people are complaining about the move when the Cowboys barely gave anything up to get him.

Put it this way: if Dallas had moved up half a round and surrendered a 6th-round pick, they probably still wouldn't have been able to draft a tackle this good. That's how little this cost.

So I'll gladly take the guy with the upside and let the Cowboys develop him. A year from now, I think we'll be talking about how good this move was while some of the people criticizing it today will be pretending they liked it all along.

Yeah I was looking at the play and that one he was talking about with number 55 on the pass rush and how the quarterback sidestepped it went to the right and had a big play That is exactly the same play that we saw in practice or camp or whatever it was in the scrimmage when Von Miller did that to Steel everyone said that would have been a sack no it wouldn't prescott saw it stepped up stepped to the side and hit a 25 yarder on the sideline so yes it does happen if you have a quarterback has pocket presents he can make up for some of them tackle issues..

But yes a lot of that video it shows that Jones needs some work but not as bad as being advertised so we will see what Adams can do with him and Riley can help him out...

But as a swing tackle I'm comfortable with him 'cause he's a veteran to come in and help..

Way to buy yourself some time. We gotta wait a year from now?

Jones has never been good, and that accounts for his play pre-injury. There’s a reason why the Steelers spent two first rounders on OTs after drafting Jones in 2023.

Thinking the Cowboys hold the key to unlocking Jones talent is comedy. Why didn’t they do that with Nate Thomas, Steele, et cetera?

At some point it comes down to the player. Jones has been a total disappointment in Pittsburgh; we didn’t “steal” one.

I suspect the Cowboys will give Jones a cheap extention. My best case scenario for Jones is we get a mediocre RT on a cheap contract for a couple of years

I was down on trade because of his injury and conditioning. It just doesn’t look like a win now move. Honestly, his past performance calls into question if he’ll ever be a quality tackle.

Also, people are getting the trade cost wrong due to a reliance on hope, rather than history (and math).

Here’s how Sturm broke down the trade value.

Using 2026 prices, Dallas sent away picks 76 and 193 for Pittsburgh for 121. That means Dallas sent away 210 pts and 14.2 for a total of 224.2 points in exchange for 52 points. The net loss of 172 points or roughly pick No. 84 which is a mid-round 3rd.

Of course, for those predicting a Cowboy Super Bowl run and the Steelers drafting Arch Manning, the math will be different

“Moved up half a round”? We gave them our 3rd and 6th. They gave us their 4th. Draft slots haven’t been determined yet, so trying to minimize the cost to support the trade is weak sauce.

When we sit on our hands for the entire third round and watch good players get scooped up, I doubt you will feel great about this trade

2027 is set to be the deepest draft in years, and our cupboard is looking pretty bare.

If Jones pans out, I will give you your props. A starting OT is more valuable than a 3rd round pick.

But if he turns out to be what he has shown himself to be since coming into the league, we just shorted ourselves in a big way in a deep draft and still have issues at OT

and the “film review” is him playing against uber drivers in the final preseason game

More objective film review of his play in actual NFL games, before spinal fusion, show a more balanced view, and it’s not great.

Teams don’t give up on top 15 draft pick OTs who are still on their rookie contract if they are even average performers.

I really don’t know what to think.

I can’t really complain, since all I was asking for was a guy who could play both sides and had some NFL starting experience. I did not expect some great player.

We know that Jerry loves his former first rounders, but one can’t make the case that Dallas is adept at fixing issues. New staff though.

I do believe that MM knew exactly who to call to grab some decent draft picks instead of cutting him, which they may very well have done.

Theres some good highlights out there, but one could do the same with Steele.

This could very much go either way. Wouldn’t shock me if he replaces Steele by week four, or if he is another Edoga….another one they loved.

Jones was graded a 1st round talent. Thomas, Steele, et cetera weren't.

Jones himself said he felt mismanaged With the Stealers. That won't happen here. The explanation he gave was a very reasonable one too.

Coaching matters and the Cowboys have great OL coaching too. A change of scenery and better coaching will make a difference. Yes he needs some work but like I said, I'll take his upside and let the Cowboys develop him.

The thing that sucks is that his rookie contract is up at the end of the year (Pitt declined the 5th year option), correct?

What about Guyton?

Nobody would want to pay him the 5th year option. The Cowboys should be able to re-sign him cheaply if they want to.

Good breakdown, especially if you like for OL responsibilities to be explained on each play.
This is correct When people don't know the responsibilities they tend to blame what they see with their eyes and not realize it wasn't that particular players responsibility it made them look bad when someone was supposed to help Chip or you were supposed to pass someone along and they don't and then you have to go back and try to make up the play..

He's got some work to do but I believe Jones Was somebody that Adams and Riley wanted here They think that they can help fix some of his flaws and make him into a good swing tackle or the starting right tackle I don't see why people have a problem with that..

Some of these same vans I remember we're talking about Doug Free as if he was a pile of trash and then realized after he left guys like Chaz Green are actually a pile of trash and guys like Doug Free are just really solid at their jobs and they're not perfect.. That is why you realize you can't build perfect offensive line so all five guys can't be Pro Bowlers you have to work with some flawless you have to work with some guys who are not up to great levels there's no way to build a team full of all pros..

But it doesn't suck It leaves it open this guy is never gonna be good enough to command market money He might command a nice salary you know for a new deal but you don't want to have to be on the hook for his contract It's better that he's here on a one year prove it deal You can either cut ties or sign them to a reasonable contract..

This isn't George Pickens we're talking about This is a full tier or more below he is not commanding big money and there's no reason for him to leave once he's here if he's playing well they offer him a fair deal...

My only fault with the bolded part is that the Cowboys thought the same thing about Kenneth Murray Jr. and Kairr Elam last year (and others before them). It isn't like these coaches have succeeded in making Steele more than he was before his injury or, at least up until now, making Guyton a starting-quality tackle. There are plenty of good NFL coaches on other staffs, so a player's lack of success is mostly because the player simply isn't good enough.

Now, I don't mind taking a chance on talent because sometimes it takes a player longer for it to click into place for him. Not everyone learns at the same pace or develops at the same pace. We've had players who have taken a few years. Jones is only in his fourth year and had an injury setback last year.

And sometimes you need to take a bunch of those risks because you're going to find one diamond in a rough and that's all you need But last year I think you're exaggerating I know those players didn't play well they had an inordinate amount a very extreme amount of injuries the last two seasons to defense they were watered down everything around them in front of them everything was bad including the defensive coordinator in the play calling and the lack of adjustments Lack of creativity made those players look worse..

I get it they look bad but sometimes when you play with trash you pick up stink... Nothing has been good with the defense the last two years mostly because it was watered down by injuries and playing guys off the street so just because they took a risk but also they picked up 5th round picks when got Gilmore and Cooks they've done it before with Hankins and Peter and it has worked out..

Do in this case yes younger players who were first round picks they're trying to find a diamond in a rough and one of these days they'll hit on it milton might be 1 of those guys too I know he wasn't the first round pick but I'm just telling you you all just because they failed they shouldn't stop trying..

Complaint around here is that the Cowboys don't try but you know what i've seen frontline high end free agents go to Philadelphia they pay almost $60 million with a new contract for Brian Huff and he absolutely was just a big of trash and a dud and the Cowboys at least didn't pay that It's all a risk I've seen many great players that picked up in free agency that didn't play so well with their new teams...

Stop bunching them all together this is alone a single transaction for a single player and it should not be compared to any other transactions it's it's it's it's his own thing this is his own story..

It depends on what happens with him this year. If he stays a backup, there won't be much demand. If he somehow supplants Steele as the RT at some point and plays well, his numbers will climb exponentially.

Frankly, I'd try to work out a short extension with him. He is getting $1.5 million from us this year, so I'd offer him two years, $6 million with a $3 million signing bonus. His total compensation would go up to $3 million this year ($1.5 base, $1.5 bonus) and if we cut him next year, he'd cost $1.5 million for the rest of the signing bonus. Now, he could bet on himself that he's going to get much more in free agency next year, but I think it would be hard to pass on that guaranteed money, and since it is short term, he know he only has to prove himself for a couple of years to get a big deal.
