New Cowboy Broderick Jones Is A Lot Better Than People Think | Film Review

I wonder how many 6th rounders make the team? I have no idea, but it seems that more free agent rookies make the team?
The general rule of thumb, it’s not exact by any stretch, is that after the top 50 picks, the success rate, measured as being a multi-year starter, drops by half for every round

The top 50 hit at around 50%. After that it falls off a cliff.

3rd rounders have a hit rate of around 16%

6th round picks hit at about 2%

and the “film review” is him playing against uber drivers in the final preseason game

More objective film review of his play in actual NFL games, before spinal fusion, show a more balanced view, and it’s not great.

Teams don’t give up on top 15 draft pick OTs who are still on their rookie contract if they are even average performers.
Spinal fusion?

It's over. Jones will never be the same or close to what he was prior to spinal fusion. Wow, why didn't the Cowboys front office let out this information before trading for him? What a waste.

They new. It wasn’t a secret. He was injured week 12 last year and his recovery process had been documented all over Bears media.

Had cervical spine fusion. Was immobilized for 3 months. Been rehabbing since then. Strength is low, as is weight.

I’m thinking that we should have a good idea of what we have by week five

To be honest, it could be considered a surprise he’s even playing, so hats off for to him for the effort.

I get that, but why risk so much to trade for such a huge physical risk like that? What are Schottenheimer, his coaches and the front office smoking?

. There’s a reason why the Steelers spent two first rounders on OTs after drafting Jones in 2023.
They move up to get Jones. This suggests they A. Have no idea how to evaluate OT B. Can not develop talent.

Guess we will find out

First of all don't be critical of my spelling grammar or my sentence structure because I use talk to text and I don't go back and fix it you knew what it meant but you want to start some trouble up here my middle name is trouble Pocket Presents See I even said it the proper way and somehow it spells it wrong pocket presents Nope it won't do it

See what I'm saying i'm literally using talk to text and it keeps spelling it that way

that way—pocket presence.

There you go I had to redo it But again you know what I was talking about the only thing good that you do in your pockets you need to keep to yourself we all know you got that problem keep your hands out of your pocket..
I certainly didnt want you to feel I was serious. Thats why I said just kidding. Hmmm or now you are kidding me ? stay cool just messin with ya

The thing that sucks is that his rookie contract is up at the end of the year (Pitt declined the 5th year option), correct?

He’s a FA in 27 . So in essence Jones traded a 3 to move back to 4 for a possible one year rental . The 6 is a throw away unless your extremely fortunate to get a “ keeper “ for Pitt

Best guess is that they got good word from the medical staff in Pittsburgh. McCarthy and Schottenheimer also have a relationship so I’m sure they talked

We jsut have to hope that the coaches and med staff were 100% on board and thus wasn’t some weird Jerry and Omar Khan helping each other out.

I think he is He played both positions and you don't give up that kind of money We're talking about not just subbing in one game we're talking about if it's something more long term he may not like to go over to the other side but I think he likes the left side better I don't know I didn't read every comment but there was a comment he didn't like switching back and forth

Absolutely not man you guys gotta stop this keep up first of all Tyler Smith's already said he does not want to be a left tackle That is not the plan or it would have been instituted already he has a knee condition severe tendonitis in one of his knees,

He is not as mobile and he doesn't stay as healthy and 100 percent he has not been himself he does not need to be an open space with a hard kick and trying to get out on some of these guys he is not moving...

You can argue with me all the time but I keep up with the Cowboys 24/7 i've heard all the responses from the coaches the players he will not be the long term solution at left tackle That is why they have the depth chart with some of the other guys on this team being the depth at tackle but they just brought over another guy to the practice squad that at any time is gonna be brought up and this guy Jones they are both tackles they are both the solutions and again II can't say this enough Tyler Smith is not gonna be the left tackle unless it's a super emergency there's a difference between an emergency and a game day swing it means he stays at left guard in the swing tackle plays either position.

Those are facts and I'm not gonna argue with you..

You haven't noticed he has a real knee condition Tyler Smith is already on one of those veteran day off management if you haven't noticed that's his been his problem lately he's getting more penalties he's not himself.

But the reason they don't talk about it a lot because they don't want to keep alerting other teams that he has that problem that can flare up at any time..
Several people talked about how he was going to concentrate on RT which they felt was the better fit for him.

Drink 'dat bottle of shut up juice

Way to buy yourself some time. We gotta wait a year from now?

Jones has never been good, and that accounts for his play pre-injury. There’s a reason why the Steelers spent two first rounders on OTs after drafting Jones in 2023.

Thinking the Cowboys hold the key to unlocking Jones talent is comedy. Why didn’t they do that with Nate Thomas, Steele, et cetera?

At some point it comes down to the player. Jones has been a total disappointment in Pittsburgh; we didn’t “steal” one.
Your not wrong but he’s 25 and athletic dismissing his ability to improve is very naive.

If we are picking late in rounds as you suggest, we will pick in the latter part of round 2 and not pick again until the mid to later part of round 4
Our late 3rd moving back to early 4th. Maybe 20 spots. Plus the 6th.

You’re also taking liberty making a claim and hoping people believe you at face value insinuating the Steelers suck at developing o-line and positing that our current coaching staff has a history of successful reclamation projects.
I didn't make a claim. Just posting what I heard and read. I obviously don't know anything about the Stealers OL coaches. The Cowboys have pretty good OL coaches. Again just what I heard and read.

Including comp picks, this is the what the draft would look like in that scenario based on actual teams in 2025

Last year, assuming a 20 space difference, it’s the 2025 Lions (us) giving up pick 81 and the 2025 Titans (Steelers) giving up pick 101.

Thats the Cowboys finishing 9-8 and the Steelers finishing 4-13.

The last time the Steelers won four games was 1969

Think we’re a playoff caliber team contending for the division? Maybe 10-7? That scenario puts the Steelers at 6-11.

The last time the Steelers won six or less games was 2003.

Vegas line is the Steelers o/u at 8.5 wins.

The proverbial streets are littered with athletic freaks and former high draft picks that failed in the NFL. Thinking Jones is different is naive. Let’s not even talk about his fused spine.

Mazi is a case in point

#1 on Bruce Feldman’s “Freaks List” in 2022

I’m sure we all remember drooling over this video on draft day.

Jones is going to be a much better player a year from now, and I think some people are going to look pretty silly for writing him off already.

The Cowboys have better coaching, better development, and a better environment around him. Give them a year to work with him and get him ready, and I think you're going to see a significantly better player.

And yes, I agree with the video. He's better than most people think. The funniest part is how much people are complaining about the move when the Cowboys barely gave anything up to get him.

Put it this way: if Dallas had moved up half a round and surrendered a 6th-round pick, they probably still wouldn't have been able to draft a tackle this good. That's how little this cost.

So I'll gladly take the guy with the upside and let the Cowboys develop him. A year from now, I think we'll be talking about how good this move was while some of the people criticizing it today will be pretending they liked it all along.
Since when has Dallas had a better any of those things than the Steelers in the Jerry era?

Good breakdown.

I've been saying that I trust that Clayton Adams saw something in Jones he and Riley could work with

I won't expect him to be all-pro but if he can be reliable, that's good enough

Actually the success rate is not bad and I am sure the Cowboys doctors knew this.
  • The Success Rate: Large-scale sports medicine studies following NFL cohorts report that roughly two-thirds to 80% of players cleared after a single-level ACDF resume their careers. On average, those who return continue playing for about 3 years or 44 games post-surgery.
  • Performance Retention: Statistical tracking (using standard NFL performance metrics) reveals that players who successfully make it back do not typically suffer a dramatic drop-off in production compared to matched healthy peers. Once the bone is biologically welded and strong, the player can perform at a very high level.
  • Timeline to Contact: The timeline varies, but the standard physical ramp-up requires 6 to 9 months to ensure a completely solid biological fusion before taking a hit.

No opinion on it because IMO Schotty just pretty much over compliments everyone on everything (YMMV), but nonetheless, I found it an interesting tid bit, so just passing it along:

Brian Schottenheimer on RT Broderick Jones: "Great job of learning the system. Very athletic. Love how coachable he is." Referenced him speaking with a previous coach Jones worked with and said that was a trait of his: "He would just eat up all the coaching they could give him. He’s doing terrific. There are some techniques he’s been taught that we’re having to retrain, and usually it takes a minute, but in terms of the athlete and young man, I’m sold."
