Stephen: This can be a quick fix

Thanks for the correction...but you play who is on your schedule...and 3 straight seasons of 12-5 means we were doing something right ..and I think the move to Schotty set us back. Not saying it wasn't time for change...but saying Schotty is not the answer
Schotty is not the answer, he is Garrett 2.0
Dak is not the answer, he is a good regular season QB who folds in the biggest moments and in playoffs
Jerry is not the answer because…….. well if you still dont know why i cant help you

This team, same as last 30 years

What's your point.........we are talking about this season with the current players and how to fix the defensive problem right now....2026.
My point was in direct response to his post. He stated getting the cowboys back to McCarthy's 13-3 seasons. I wanted to correct that and give some context that those 3 12-5 seasons weren't as good as they looked on paper. So to get us back to that "shape" isn't a big stretch and if that's our benchmark, then we are in for more playoff losses, as that team wasn't good enough. Again, the record was a paper tiger.

Gotcha ........thanks

I think they can right the ship somewhat.

But this falls in line with every year that they think our roster is better overall than it is

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones on @SASportsStar: “I do think this can be a quick fix, but at the same time, we also gotta understand this is a work in progress. I love the culture and DNA on this team still.

“I think our defense should just keep getting better. The offense did a lot of good things and I think they’ll continue to get better as well.

“I’d be the first to admit that I was very surprised and disappointed (by the season opener), but also believe that this team has a bright future.

“… I know that we got the right kind of guys on this team that I think will answer the bell, and we’ll continue to get better. I think it will be with urgency. And I think we’ll see a much better product on Sunday.”

Yeah, Stephanie, getting worse is not even possible.

I agree with mostly everything you said. But let me ask you a few honest questions. Are either of the QBs that played in the Super Bowl last year better than Dak? I would argue they are not. Do you think Dak is a better QB than Schotty is a head coach? I would argue he is. Do you think Dak is a better QB than Jerry is a GM? I would argue he is.

Let me also say it took me a while to come around on Dak....and that was after looking at the QB play around the entire NFL and admitting to myself that there is only ONE Patrick Mahommes in the NFL...and we don't have him, so every other organization has to figure it out without Mahomes type QB, and we do too.

So is the real issue Daks salary? Because I think the owner feels as if Daks paycheck means he can cover all the other warts in this organization...and that is NOT how football works. Because even if you take his salary down from $60m a year to $53m a year (because the market is what the market is) nothing about the product we put on the field every Sunday and the results would change.

So my overall pushback is Dak is good enough to win..with the right pieces around him...but that is true for 90% of the QBs in the NFL. And even saying that...look how Mahomes looked when the pieces around him fell off. And I say that knowing full well that Mahomes is better than Dak. Hell, look how Aikman looked when the players, organizational structure, discipline and coaching fell off around him. Troy is probably still having nightmares of Clay Shiver at Center in Dallas.

Disclaimer: I am not a Dak lover or hater. I am a Cowboys fan. And Dak is not at or near the top of the list of what is wrong with the Cowboys. But I get the sentiment "if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem"

Correct. However, it's hard to put the correct pieces around Dak paying him 60 mil/season.

That market thingie is a copout. If any player is screaming for a huge salary and is not worth it, you must move on.

A few years ago it was already obvious that Dak expected to be paid overmarket. At that point a trade should have been thought about. Due to not having a competent GM, it was not even considered.

So, the Dak contract has been mismanaged from the beginning...and the only way to correct it..would be to get off it.

But if you look at the QBs salaries in the NFL...and you align Daks salary with the tier you believe he should be in...he still in the low 50s...and a 7m paycut would not make this team any better.

Remember...the people that run this organization thought it was wise to pay Trey Lance 6m a couple of years ago to hold a clip board...when he could have been cut for nothing....and even when Dak got hurt...they played Cooper Rush instead of Trey. Again, the problems with this org are much bigger than Dak.

And market value is market value...you can personally disagree...but wasn't Dak the runner up MVP the year he was negotiating?

And don't assume the Jones boys would take hometown discounts from players and use it to improve the team. If I am a player..and I have to watch the affects this sport has on their bodies (the footage of Chris Johnson is gut wrenching)...I would not offer discounts to billionaires who view the game in a suit and tie into their 80s from a cozy suite. And I do not disparage owners for being billionaires, but I also do not disparage players for being millionaires.

Absolutely, the Dak contract has been mismanaged. You don't think so? At this point, only way to correct it would be to sign some multiyear extension to push salary down the road. When it was obvious(early on) that we were going nowhere last season, the extension could've/should've been done right then, pushing bonuses into last season. However, that takes a heady GM.

Once again, the market thingie is a silly notion. Prolly created by the agents to get their QB more money. It really makes no sense since every QB is different. Look at the other positions. You very seldom see the 10th best player at a position being paid the same as the best. It's weird at the very least.

Last paragraph: Sure, as pertaining to this org. Since it's obvious we are rotten from the top down, I also wouldn't give them a discount. However, I am a fan of this team, and as a fan of this team I hated the Dak contract because it was blatantly obvious that we would find it hard to field a team paying him that much. And the evidence is overwhelming as the QBs making top dollar are not making many super bowls. It's the Darnolds and Staffords of the league. Stafford, BTW, took less money to stay w/ the Rams. I think it was around 40 mil.

So, if your argument is that he should fight for a contract over the top of the market because of the extreme incompetence of our FO, doesn't that mean you've given up? I mean, easy conclusion.

I know you're joking about the 7 mil. 7 mil buys you a very competent player. Would it have helped last season? Of course not, because Jerry had driven this D into the ground by poor drafting and very poor talent evaluation.

Stephen the “quick” fix is hire a real GM and you and Jerry getting on your yacht and sailing off into the sunset. Unfortunately, that’s not a quick fix as it would take a few years for the organization to start over but it would be a step in the right direction.

There's a premium that comes with being the owner AND the QB of the Dallas Cowboys...so it just is what it is. I mean Justin Herbert is making 52m...Jalen hurts is getting 51m...and I know Hurts has a Super Bowl...and that MUST be respected. But if you replace Dak with Hurts...is Dallas better? Heck Trevor Lawrence was 35-42 with 1 playoff win coming into this season...and he is getting 55m a year. So the QB thing is wacky for every team, not just Dallas.

This team didn't even want to pay Derrick Henry (who lives in Dallas and by all accounts wanted to be here) $7 or $8 million a few years ago...so again...do you trust this front office with an extra $7m? So I don't blame Dak one bit. But like I said, I do understand the frustration..and Dak and Jerry are easy targets...especially with Jerry having the longest tenure in the front office and Dak having the longest tenure in Dallas currently on the roster.

I said it in an earlier thread...if this defense is still floundering at the bottom of the NFL by the end of this year...and Dak plays well enough this year to still show value...we should seriously see if we can move off of him...that is what would be best for ALL parties.

Who is Stephen kidding. This has never been a quick fix. It starts with "it's a communications problem". Then it's "we are going to simplify the defense". Then it's "we are going to work hard in the off-season to get this fixed". The penalties was a quick fix too, wasn't it?

If it's a quick fix then why wasn't their a fix during the Giants game where on two drives they ran the same plays multiple times consecutively without a Cowboys "quick fix".

Some things are a quick fix. The taunting penalties should be an easy fix. The dropped passes don't really need a fix because I don't think that will be an issue every game.

The coverage issues? I am not so certain that is a quick fix. Maybe they just don't have the talent at CB to get the job done.

The lack of pass rush? Again, I am not so sure they have the outside edge rushers to get the job done.

Dak throwing bad INTs and missing deep passes to his two wideouts? Dak has been in the league for a eon and he has never figured out how to throw the ball away rather than force it in to someone. That's not getting fixed. They just have to hope Dak minimizes that stuff.

Not recovering fumbles? This is a good news, bad news issues. It is good they knocked the ball out 4 times. In fact, that is a fabulous performance. It's just bad luck that they only recovered 1. Can't fix luck. You just know that over time it will even out. Just keep knocking the ball out.

I suspect that some of these issues, particularly the coverage issues are going to linger for the entire season, like they did when Nolan was looking for quick fixes..

Whoa!

Mods, I think my guy Rockport's account has been hacked.

Just wanted to report it. Thanks.
