The only thing big and little do worse than waiting too late on contracts is going early on average players thinking they are “getting a deal”. So I thought I would look at some recent extensions:

The Good Ones:

Lamb
Tyler Smith
Big Q

The Bad Ones:
Steele - his recent pay cut keeps this from being worse.

Bell- why? Dude has no position and is way too expensive for just ST.

The Ugly Ones:

Ferg - limited athleticism and a horrific blocker. Now he can’t catch and fumbles when he does. Ranked 1-32 for TE’s in the league I would put him in the 20-25 range.

Diggs - never the same after all of the injuries. Either the medical staff is incompetent and told the front office he would be fine or the front office didn’t care.

Bland- Ugh. He’s done like dinner. You can’t even salvage him by moving him inside cause Downs is 1000x better. Has to be one of the worst contracts in the league.

Common denominator seems to be the issue of extending guys AFTER they suffer serious injury. Would like to think big and little would learn but they won’t.

Jerry has way too much faith in players coming back from injuries. This goes back at least a decade to Jaylon and the Micheal Gallup extension. Jerry thinks they'll come back at 100% after their recovery period, and he can "buy low" by resigning them when they're hurt. Not a lot of these guys come back at 100%.

The other thing he needs to get over is fear of paying studs after big seasons. It's like the opposite of his "resign during injury" ploy. He is trying to avoid buying high on guys, so he hardballs them and pushes it out a season, and then buys even higher. He's tried to hardball Dak, CeeDee, Parsons and Pickens after big contract seasons, and the first 3 all blew up in his face.

Some guy on ESPN did a breakdown, and said that if Jerry just offered CeeDee, Dak, and Parsons top-of-the-league deals right away, vs stalling, it would've saved Dallas $100M over the next 4 seasons. In a league where the cap inflates 8+% a year, sometimes paying top dollar right now is the smartest thing you can do.

I am starting to think that this Jerry guy's not a very good GM....

This is a big issue. I think Jerry likes to sign guys who "cut him a deal." The problem is that those guys give Jerry "a deal" because their agents know they won't find a better deal elsewhere. The players who are actually worth a lot of money, like CD or Micah, won't give Jerry a deal, which is why we get the drama we experience.

Queenin was too late. They knew they wanted to free up money but waiting until two mega contracts for DTs landed.

Most every GM in the league would have signed Steele and Bland in the same context.

Big Q has a big reputation but he's not playing big so far this season. Right now, that trade is not looking good nor is the contract.

In cap dollars maybe, but not in actual cash, which is what Jerry & co. care about.

The Cowboys love the tag because it gives them an extra free year under market value in cash AND pushes the next extension. You could have signed Pickens for $40m this year instead of, say, $48 next year, but you saved $13m this year so you're in the black by $5m. This makes sense in terms of cash, but is really stupid against the cap.

Actually, none of them would have signed Bland to that absurd contract after one good season. He flashed as a rookie, got injured, got rewarded, and now he sucks. Typical Jerry in-house signing.

Idk what you're talking about but yes, they would have. You're ignoring an entire season of his.

He had 5 INTs as a rookie and then 9 in his second year. Every corner with 14 INTs in 2 seasons is going to get signed lol. He got hurt before his third season and was healthy when he got the contract.

Steele was ugly signed while injured.

Diggs and Bland both tremendously benefited from Parsons.

If you have a phenomenal OLine you don't over pay a RB. If you have phenomenal pass rush, you don't over pay the CB's.

It is a complimentary sport. A real GM should be able to comprehend this.

CD Lamb was WAY late. He was threatening a holdout

That has to change. They need to learn. We'll see but I have my fingers crossed they actually have.

I'd add Luepke to the bad. It's not a ton of money, but like.. why?

I am not sure of Big Q. Especially compared to Jalen Carter who has a similar extension. Jerry always overpays players when one of his stars refuses to take a discount. Next offseason will be fun especially if Porter plays well.

I stand firm on giving one year deals I know it'll never ever work but how many times have we've seen these ugly deals go sour as soon as the player gets the bag

One-year deal is usually about a team's reluctance to commit to the player. The One-year compensation can't be too much or the player will expect that same compensation multiplied by the number of years they seek the extension to be. That usually dooms the possibility of a multi-year extension from the very beginning.

False. Steele was average and coming off a huge injury. Bland has had one good year and is injury prone. Neither would have gotten anywhere near as much anywhere else

Definitely not Steele coming off an injury. Maybe a good 1 year prove it contract.

A great pass rush obviously makes a DB's job significantly easier. A real GM would know this.
