You get what you pay for

The Dallas Cowboys are easily the most profitable sports franchise in the US and close to being so in the entire world.

And yet this organization with a world class stadium, world class team facilities, and the highest value in the NFL is paying its head coach and assistant coaches in the bottom of the league’s pay scale. When there is no cap on coaches pay, why is this happening? When it comes to coaching, you usually get what you pay for.

It doesn’t take a football expert to know that to win a championship in the NFL, or even get close, it requires an outstanding head coach and staff. Knowing that, how much does this franchise value its coaches? Surely we are hiring the best possible candidates, and willing to spend at the same high level as our facilities to get the best coach that gives us the best chance to win, right?

Brian Schottenheimer was the guy our owner believes is worthy of leading the storied Dallas Cowboys to a championship. A guy with no experience at any level as a HC, and no other team was even interested in interviewing.

How much is Schotty valued by this organization ? His $4.5 million salary puts him right at the bottom of pay for non-interim NFL head coaches. The bengals Zac Taylor reportedly makes what Schotty makes. The only NFL HC making less is the browns HC Todd Monken. Even when Mike McCarthy was here - a man with a SB ring on his resume - was never even the highest paid NFC East HC, lol.

So knowing it requires a strong, talented head coach to win big in this league, not only did Jerry pick a guy no one else wanted to interview, he pays whoever he hires chicken feed.

There are several old sayings that apply here:
  • You get what you pay for.
  • Whatever you value most, you pay for.
  • If winning is the goal, you must be willing to pay for it.
We’ve had six different head coaches in the 21st century. Two of those six had great resumes and a proven track record of success in this league.(Parcells and Big Mac) The other four - Campo, Wade, Garrett and now Schotty - are not serious hires.

You get what you pay for.
Great post I've echoed this for years.
The fact that there is no salary cap on the coaching staff means that we could buy the very best.

This is a spot where Jerry could use his money to put us head and shoulders above everyone else.

But as we all know and have discussed many times Jerry's comfort with the head coach is far more important than the head coaches actual talent making the team succeed.

We are stuck in this perpetual groundhog Day of building the team according to Jerry's rules which make it impossible to win a championship not just unlikely full-blown impossible.

I got the gut feeling this was a very bad hire when Jerry said we're going to give Shotty a shot.

Kind of like he was turning over a paper route to a new kid just didn't seem very confident inspiring at all and here we are watching very bad football and being embarrassed.

We get it, the organization sucks. You’ve told us pretty much daily and many others hourly say the same thing. I don’t get why people enjoy it so much. Try and enjoy the games win, lose or tie. It’s ok to complain. Lord knows there’s a lot to complain about but doing it every day and others in every thread creates such a depressing forum.
No that's the big problem you don't get it you're an enabler of the problem.

You have no loyalty to the real Dallas Cowboys and what they stood for and the great men that built America's team.

You pledge your allegiance to a carnival Barker with the morals of an alley cat.

How can you possibly enjoy watching this product as bad as it is.
Exactly what part of it is enjoyable to watch.
For a real Cowboys fan it is downright painful to watch what Jerry has done to our once proud franchise by way of his team building philosophy.

Bob respectfully voices the concerns of all the real Dallas cowboy fans and gives us a place to discuss those concerns. In his threads.

If you're satisfied with the participation trophy atmosphere that Jerry has created just keep it to yourself and don't bother to read the threads created by real intelligent cowboy fans.

You are the true hater of everything that was the real iconic Dallas Cowboys as you support Jerry and his scam to make generational wealth off of America's team.

It's 100% GREED that is sinking this organization! When you constantly do you shopping at the bargain bin, you get what you pay for.
Paying Schotty more would not make him a better coach. Schotty is probably being paid commensurate with the results he is putting on the field.

If a team has a great coach they tend to not let him get away. They do pay them. So if a team lets a great coach “get away” then from that team’s perspective the coach is not as great as people perceive.

Up and coming coaches (Parker), tend to be hungrier and work harder. But they can also be in over their head. Sometimes the risk works out well (McViegh). Sometimes not so much (Schotty so far).

Coaching may be part of what is holding us back, but I don’t think that’s anywhere near our biggest issue. Overpaying for players like Bland, Ferguson and Steele is a much greater issue.

We have done it for the past 30 years and counting: Crawford, Witten, Dez, Sean Lee, Zac Martin. All were way past their prime and we kept backing up the Brinks truck for them.

Secondarily, we simply refuse to maximize the draft. We would rather finish with the 10th draft pick rather than the 3-5th draft pick. That’s stupidity when a lower pick means greater pick value. And we do it year after year.

The Cowboys have serious issues but what they pay their head coach is way on down the line in issues.

Well, they just hired a real DC to help out CP who is experiencing severe growing pains.

Loyalty to a sports franchise is personal. It has nothing to do with the team’s owner. Owners change that doesn’t mean allegiance changes. A fan who gives up on a team under any circumstance was never a real fan.

You always say that, but it’s not necessarily true. Sean Payton makes $20 million a year, so how are the Broncos doing right now? And what about Sean McVay and the Rams? Sure, they won a Super Bowl, but we have Mike McCarthy for $6 million, and he’s won one too. Most of those coaches have a single Super Bowl, and the Cowboys have hired them as well. When you’re starting out, you don’t make as much as when you’re seasoned, but Sean Payton might be the most overrated coach in the league for $20 million. One Super Bowl in 20 years, with Drew Brees for 19 of them, three losing seasons in a row, and winning just once with one of the best to ever play. The Rams currently have a losing record despite one of the best rosters, and the Broncos, hailed as the next big team, look unimpressive for $20 million. They lost in the playoffs last year and started slow this season, showing regression.

There’s such a thing as overpaying and bloated salaries, just like people criticize our quarterback’s pay. You don’t necessarily get what you’re paid for, you get what you demand, and if teams are willing to overpay, that’s on them. The Cowboys have been down the road with veteran retreads and are now trying something different. You can keep pushing these narratives, but the reality is those high-paid coaches don’t seem to be coaching much better.

How about college? You know how many college head coaches that were paid around 10 million or more failed in their first three years, didn't do anything and they got fired with like six years left on their contracts and a lot of those colleges are still making it. Like Bill Belichick. How much money was he making at the end of new New England run and which he couldn't get them back going in the right direction? How much money is he making now at North Carolina? How is his money correlating to wins and quality? Because it's not. That's rhetorical. We can do this all day. You can find me. Something to support your narrative, and I'll find something to support my narrative means it's not just about money.

You remember all those big names like Urban Meyer? And some of the others that they went and grabbed from college because that looked like the right thing to do. They were well paid and they all failed. Most of the guys that we remember, like Petrino. And I can't remember the other one recently, but yeah, they were supposed to be great and they were well paid, 6 to 10 million a year. I mean, is that what you think you throw money at? It fixes it, because we can go around the league right now and talk about salaries. For the coaching staff and how they're failing right now...

He paid Bill Parcells to get his stadium. He valued Bill Parcell to get his stadium. So, take his stadium. You tax payers own it.

AT&T Stadium is owned by the City of Arlington, Texas. [1]
  • Public Ownership: The city legally owns the stadium property and building following a 2004 public referendum that funded a $325 million public contribution via a half-cent sales tax.
  • Private Operation: The Dallas Cowboys, led by owner Jerry Jones, finance and operate the venue through a long-term lease agreement that runs through 2039.
So look for a Super Bowl around 2037-2039. He will hire a real Head Coach with authority and leadership to get his lease renewed.

I wouldn't spend too much time on this. He's (mostly) an act.

He just enjoys bickering with people. FOr some reason i tmakes his day.

Plus, like his boy Jerry, he's on eternal double-down until (if) we eventually become more successful and he has his "Told ya so, ya fake fans" card ready to go.

He knows he doesnt have to pay top dollar for coaches because fans will still watch and attend the games. Money to coaches doesn't equal more money for Jerrah.
Glitzy stadium and facilities equals more money. Big events are held there for non games which brings a lot of money and attention. Even if the Cowboys suck other fans will sell the stadium out to see Jerry's glitzy world.
It's very easy to see what Jerry values, money and fame. He has both and doesn't need to win another superbowl to keep it so why pay anyone more of his precious money and also give up any of his fame to a head coach who could steal it.

I don't think any serious coach with any kind of resume or reputation for being a good coach would come to the circus that is the dallas cowboys without some sort of agreement that jerry would step back and be a hands off owner. Jerry wont ever do that so the revolving door of no name puppets will continue.

Was it necessary for Rockport to complain about this post? Try and keep up before calling me out.
I’m not calling you out. I just don’t see why people can’t be more civil towards each other on this website. There are some here that make everything conflict driven. (Not saying you)

It’s ok to vehemently disagree. But we should all try to get along. We are all Cowboys fans.

The team does not have a world class owner. He’s a cheap, football ignorant, NFL franchise owner who only wants to attend ownership meetings and look like he’s the equal to other franchise owners. He isn’t. And has proved it.
Plus, a world class owner would NEVER hire Jerry Jones as GM and give him 30+ years of futility on the field.
