Prescott and Romo bottomfeeders

Dak Prescott has a career regular-season record of 22-25 (.468) against teams that enter the game with a winning record.

Tony Romo had a regular-season record of 19-32 against teams with a winning record (above .500) and an 8-10 record against teams that finished at .500.

So for all of the guys touting how Romo was a much more capable QB, this stat shows the falsehood in that statement. They are pretty much the same QB. Both are known to put up good numbers yet crack in high pressure moments in big games against above average competition.

Just for the sake of comparison

Tom Brady 74–47
Highest number of wins against winning teams in NFL history.

Patrick Mahomes 22–12 (or ~64.7%)
One of the highest win percentages against winning competition in the modern era.

Lamar Jackson 14–4
Strong track record against winning teams, including standout single-season marks.
My recollection of Romo was how often with less than a 5 or 6 minutes left in the game, he would rally the team for the go ahead score but his defense would not be able to get the stop with 1 - 2 minutes left on the clock and we would lose the game. His defense rarely got the stop.

From ChatGPT:
Tony Romo led 29 game-winning drives during the regular season with the Dallas Cowboys (2006–2016).

His career totals were:

  • 29 regular-season game-winning drives
  • 24 fourth-quarter comebacks
  • 1 postseason game-winning drive
  • 30 total game-winning drives, including playoffs
A game-winning drive is an offensive scoring drive in the fourth quarter or overtime that gives a team the lead for good.

Despite his reputation for struggling in big moments, Romo was actually a very effective late-game quarterback.

As of October 15, 2026, Dak Prescott has led 27 regular-season game-winning drives for the Dallas Cowboys.

Here's how he compares with Tony Romo:

StatisticTony RomoDak Prescott
Regular-season game-winning drives2927
Fourth-quarter comebacks2420
Playoff game-winning drives11
Total game-winning drives3028
Prescott is just 2 game-winning drives behind Romo, despite having played fewer seasons.

Romo and Dak have both been holding this franchise hostage for 20 years. Jerry refusing to trade draft capital and players to go get a franchise QB has haunted this team. You can win games with 4th round QBs and even FAs but you’re not winning in the playoffs without pedigree.

pedigree. That is beyond a doubt one of the dumbest claims anywhere
Just how many first rd busts at QB have there been compared to SB champions
like about 10-1
there is your pedigree
Tell me what was Tom Brady's pedigree?

This is categorically untrue, and has been proven wrong over and over again.

And besides, the last QB's that Jerry was enamored with in the draft process were Johnny Manziel and Paxton Lynch.

Very true. I’ll also say Dak reports to training camp in perfect shape, while the 2nd half of Romo’s career, he showed up with a spare tire, completely out of shape.

IMO, Romo’s career would have been a little more successful if we could have kept Parcels. Parcels kept Romo humble (“let’s not get the anointing oil out yet”) and would have continued to help Romo’s development.

typical revisionism and bs
but then clearly someone else that refuses to put the blame where it belongs which is the GM

After 12 years....why?

We let all those other QBs before Romo sail off into the sunset. What is THIS madness?

This is why looking at face value stats is beyond meaningless and just points out the members who you shouldn't spend much time debating
You can almost make any point you want if you don't understand how stats work in a big picture way.

What happens is they choose the hypothesis (the 'agenda" if you will)....then select the stats they think supports it.

It's aolmost the opposite of what should happen.

Just smart enough to think they can bamboozle everyone with them...if they chose the right ones and very little context.

This biggest difference I see here is coaching.

- Bill Belichick
- Andy Reid
- John Harbaugh

Romo had:
Jason Garrett

At least Dak had a few seasons with Big Mac, whom people can hate on, but he's factually a Super Bowl-winning coach with an overall winning record.

This is an interesting topic and rabbit hole to go down. There’s been talk about how if Dak is not on the team then we’ll be back to the Quincy Carter days. I’ve come to realize we haven’t recovered from the Aikman retirement and we’re still in the post Aikman rebuild. I like Dak and I like Romo but there’s some things I want to throw out.

Quincy Carter only came one win away from the peak of the Romo and Dak years. Carter lead this team to the playoffs and lost in the WC round. Dak and Romo have won a WC game. Hence Dak and Romo only got us one game closer to the success we want than Carter did.

Both Dak and Romo have great end of half and end of game stats but quarters 1-3 they put us in a bad position and have inflated stats to try and pull us out.

Dak and Romo both have quantitative stats showing they did not perform well against higher tier teams and qualitative data to back up the stats, this adding to fan frustration and polarizing both QBs.

Both are limited in their game.

Both have incredible back stories that make them very likable.

My belief is Dak and Romo are not that much better than Carter but are more marketable, likable, and have inflated stats that present themselves as fools gold. Dak and Romo have been good enough for us to not completely rebuild and sell out and get a top tier draft QB prospect but have been enough to keep us hovering around .500 and bad playoff performances.

I don’t think we ever left the Quincy Carter Clint Stoerner “Stone Age” of QBs and franchise futility, we just have a guys that we like better than the immediate guys that played QB after #8 retired.
Great insight.

He just trolls IMO.
Funny how I'm one of the few members on here who has never been proven wrong yet. People scoff at my comments. And get frustrated with my pessimism.

Each preseason I state all the flaws of the team and I declare exactly what is coming. I talk about the preseason hype, the time honored okie doke, and the eventual Groundhog day results. Which is followed by Cowboy fan amnesia in the off season where numerous members pretend they have suddenly "forgot" what I said was coming.

And I've been 100% correct. I also have the courage behind my convictions to put my money where my mouth is. I have made over $200,000 betting on Cowboy games. I just paid off my second mortgage doing so. I know their time honored flaws like the backside of my hand.

Game winning drives has always been one of the gray area things for me and not an important stat. To many variables

"Team game"
Depends on length of career
Team played for aka requires being in a close game to begin with
Team defense

Some quarterbacks may not have the same opportunities as others to have game winning drives as they have big leads or their defense is stout. If anything it should be done percentage wise of wins vs losses when in that situation to see which quarterbacks are elite in that matter. I mean Kirk Cousins and Eli Manning have more game winning drives that a lot of quarterbacks. Aikman is low on that list for obvious reasons. Hell Andy Dalton has more game winning drives then Dak, Romo, Mahomes, Allen and etc. Granted Mahomes and Allen still have many years left in them.
