What does he add? Let's begin with position stability. Waters has played right guard his entire career, so he allows Dallas to plays its five projected offensive line starters in places of maximum comfort. Tyron Smith was always the left tackle. Rookie Ronald Leary was projected to be the left guard starter, to give Dallas a "power side" and he played there for two preseason games before needed a knee scope. He's on track to start there Sunday.

Waters signing officially ends the Travis Frederick at guard/ Phil Costa at center musings. Frederick has easily been Dallas' best center and he gets to settle in there now. Waters' arrival also ends the Doug Free at guard experiment, after one contest. Free showed he could play inside if needed, but Waters is a better guard than he is, and Free is a better right tackle than Jermey Parnell.

Waters also brings balance and mobility to the line. When Bernadeau teammed with Free on the right side, and Leary with Smith on the left, the Cowboys were decidedly left-handed in the run game. No longer. The Cowboys will be just as much a threat to run right now as to their left. What's more, Waters can pull and play in space. The Cowboys have two tackles who can pull and lead toss plays effectively. Now, they have a right guard and a center who can pull. The overall mobility gives OC Bill Callahan a lot more flexibility in the run game, allowing him to run zone and man blocking plays as he sees fit.

With a stable of quicker, flashier backs, look for Dallas to emphasize their speed. Look for wide zone runs, for tosses left and right, with one of the OTs pulling around the tight end to lead the interference. Dallas can now run counters to their left and right. They should be much harder to read.

I agree, Don't expect to much from Waters in the first part of the season. But hopefully by mid season he will still be healthy and ready to make a playoff run.... Better late than never.....and a better guard than any the Cowboys have right now...

I don't understand why a lot of people are saying this. I may be completely wrong about the whole thing and I apologize if I am, but I see no reason why Waters can't play some tomorrow and be effective immediately. I don't think we're gonna have to wait 8 weeks to reap the benefits from this signing.

From what I have heard and read, Waters needs to add some weight and get in football shape. Its normal for OLmen to lose 20-30 lbs after they retire. We have to remember Waters has been completely retired from football for over a year now.....The skills are there but.it will take some time to get his body back in football shape....

Agreed. Broaddus, like many anti-Waters posters, has an agenda. Waters will make fools of all them soon enough. Waters will not need half a season to get into football shape and I have no doubt he can play against the Giants. Waters may not have a pro bowl season like he did in New England (although I still believe) but he is not some journeyman player. He will be performing at a level not seen around here very soon.

Jason Garrett said Waters was only a little over his playing weight, so there is no need to worry about him being undersized.

2 first round picks and the rest cobbled together is how ALL good O-lines are built and it's these kind of signings that can make a line better. It was injuries and a lack of playing time together that made this line look so bad last year. Right now I'll expect a pro line that can get it done till I see different.

This is the problem I have with Broaddus and why I think he isn't scouting anymore. I think he let's bias affect his evaluation of players....a scout has to be more open minded.

I like Broaddus but he has been wrong quite a lot this offseason, so much so that I think Jerry may be using him to provide false information to our rivals. Kind of like the inflatable tanks the alies used before D-Day.

Broaddus is just giving his opinion on what he knows. He is not on the coaching staff so if the staff wants to play Waters, and he is able to go, the Waters will play. Just take the information Broaddus gives you as a little extra to your Cowboys day. If he is wrong, he is wrong...no big deal.

Waters knew he was likely signing with Dallas a month before he actually did.
I doubt he could play a whole game tomorrow but there's no reason why he couldn't played a few series if they have the roster spot.
He obviously has done this before and started right away so we can be fairly sure he knows what it takes to get ready.

We once had Emmitt skip all training camp and the first 2 weeks of the regular season before coming in.
Might have taken him 5 carries to get comfortable....

At some point I'd like to hear the real truth behind this story. There has to be a lot more to it than the way things went down.
