I think this whole situation with Ratliff just smells funny. Something more to it than the injury. It's literally almost been a year. His last game was November 18th. Guys come back from ACLs, Achilles, and whatever else quicker than that. The only injury I can think of in recent memory that has resulted in more lost time is Peyton's multitude of neck surgeries.

I think this whole situation has a bitter-sweet kind of theme to it. On the one hand, there was a time where people were saying that Dallas couldn't possibly ditch Spencer because they didn't have anyone behind him or any sort of player to replace him (Aside from that being a horrible reason to overpay a guy and aside from countless other players being let go under similar circumstances, that was a VERY STRONG talking point on this board). Marinelli has shown that good coaching goes a long ways.

On the other hand, Jerry thinks good coaching is pretty much irrelevant to some extent and struggles with identifying good coaching from the start.

So what we have is a situation in which Jerry may rely on the crappy coaching he chooses, which may ultimately result in sucky decisions.

At least Dallas has a kick *** stadium and is all but guaranteed to have half of their schedule on primetime bill regardless of how good the team is. At least we have that.

Yeah, if this is indeed true then that is a very brutal injury, but his agent is claiming that it was the same injury from December and Jay Ratliff was actually practicing in mini-camp. Something stinks about this situation.

What smells fishy (not talking about Mike Fisher) is that the team doctors identified it as a sports hernia and Rat's agent said it was a complete tear of the tendons in the groin area. We are talking about four to six weeks (T-New) as opposed to one year recovery.

Could it be that Jerry was trying to force Rat back on the field so he could get his money's worth and save face? Based on Rat's reaction to Jones that's what it smells like to me.

Yes we will take the dead money and move on. Just don't spin this debacle as "savings."

We will literally pay 1 mil less on the cap next year than we would have if Ratliff was on the roster, that's a savings.

If you want to talk about paying the rest towards a guy that's no longer on the roster, that's a different convo.

I also agree with moving him off the nose. I am thinking more and more that his physical situation is overblown and that his issues are emotional/mental though.

I could certainly see that. Regardless, it is a shame that his career in Dallas is ending this way.

I can't even imagine what kind of penalty the league would throw at Jerry for that one. Draft choices, fines and forget about hosting a SB in like forever.

Just to be clear Ratliff was given 10m in additional money beyond his original 2 year deal. Not 18.
The other 8m was the final two years of his preceding deal and were simply guaranteed.

The cap hit for Ratliff next year is so large because we love to do yearly renegotiations and hand players there yearly salary up front in exchange for future cap hits.

What everyone is crying about is essentially the same money as Spencer.

What makes this truly unfortunate is to have two guys in one position group in this situation.

I hope so but I have little confidence in this. He's done this kind of thing for about as long as I can remember. Not sure he can look away from the shinny. Hope you are right thou.

ROFL. Sean Lee got virtually the same deal Ratliff had. 10m SB ~18m guaranteed.

Also Jay Ratliff's second contract was the best value in the NFL at the time. He was an All Pro NT for 3m a season. Jerry shrewdly let Chris Canty walk to the Giants and resigned the lesser heralded Ratliff instead.
