I believe it was Fish said agents try to circumvent Stephen and court Jerry when it comes to contracts. Jerry the soft touch always, whether it be players, scouts, etc. .. IMO the only people Jerry was not soft about were the old Tex Schramm employees, who the new daddy wanted to oust, although it took him years to do so because we were winning Super Bowls.

Nick Eatman said what I had figured, that Jay was a good guy at least back when very loyal, who saw his coaches fired and lineman friends traded or not re-signed. From what I understand he loved Wade - I remember him front and center in the locker room after games. You hear that Jay was mean to media, I don't know that. IMO when you make that kind of money/have that kind of profile you might oughta be good to the media because in Dallas when you retire you can get decent airtime in media here or at least continued exposure that might work into a full time gig in media, unless you've burned your bridges.

Baby, you're a rich man, Baby you're a rich man now. Please Jay, invest your tained money wisely. Treasury bonds. Yeth, the 5% interest won't make you rich but you are already a rich man.

Save. Invest wisely.

Otherwise in 5 years you will be a greeter at Love Field and wearing orange business suits at meet-and-greets when they no longer fit your fat ash.

I always thought the way Wade was treated left a ver bad taste in his mouth, considering he loved to play for him.

Won't happen. When you do NOT know what you are doing. When you cannot tell an apple from an orange. You do the knee jerk thing. Which is do NOTHING. Because you do not know what to do. Jerry, feeling burned by the Leonard Davis signing...simply refused to PROPERLY address the interior of the OL because of it. That is the behaviour of a man that runs a football organization like a NORMAL business. And that is the problem....this is NOT a normal business!!!! If had the ability to PROPERLY assess his product and the needs of his product....he would have NEVER paid what he paid for Davis. And he would have realized that Romo is in the prime of his career and getting the OL right is the BEST chance to win.

I stated at the time that I would not reveal my sources. But I am frustrated today. So I will provide a dead giveaway clue. I spoke to a FORMER Cowboy that is in the HOF that KNOWS Leonard Davis pretty well. And he said had Jerry asked him about Leonard Davis....he would have told him to NEVER do what Jerry did. Should not be hard to figure out.

Are you talking about last year? OL looks pretty decent today and they signed a legit vet for the interior and drafted a legit center.

I am talking about how Jerry reacted when he felt burned by the Leonard Davis signing. You said you hope Jerry learns from the Jay Ratliff signing. Doing "nothing" is not learning. The interior of the OL is FINALLY solid...but look how long it took! It peaked in 2007. And had gone down hill every year until now. Band aids galore. You don't take your QB in the prime of his career and put garbage in front of him. And that is what Jerry did. And he reacted that way because he did NOT get his return on investment from the Leonard Davis signing. So don't hold your breath on him "learning" from the Jay Ratliff signing. In a year when it is CLEAR the division is easy pickings...I am afraid that there will not be enough scabs, construction workers, garbage men etc....for us to get off the street to field a DL for 10 more games.

Don't do Treasury Bonds. Buy them now and you are lucky if you can see 4% on a 30 year bond. No thanks.

OK, I got you. I also agree that the OL should have been addressed much sooner, but I'm looking forward. I don't think there is really any big name DL out there and we cant afford one anyway.

Why was he let go? Wasn't he one of the more dominant nose tackles in the game at one point?

It is not your job or mine to find a "big name" DL. That is what he and his staff get paid MILLIONS to do. But we shall see what they come up with. Like I said...the division is there for the taking. But if QBs have ALL DAY to throw from the pocket...then we can expect to see this defense give up 40+ points a game. And they already have a built in excuse...no Ratliff, no Spencer, no Crawford and a limited Ware (who I think will be limited all year).

Which leads to my next point. If you KNOW your defense is limited. Put together a gameplan the features the strenght of your team....the OFFENSE. Which is why Denver scored 50 on us...because they know they need to. And they will try to do that every week. The way we approached the KC game was ALL wrong. And we lost because of it. This is not rocket science.

Well, you can go the Pacific Rim route and lose it all. The thrust of the suggestion is to save wisely. the money be safe in TBs though the return is 4-5 %.
Spread the offerings, too, to European start-ups and get middlings with Chinese investments. Stay away from the Nigerian stock market, heh.

But seriously, TBs are safe. Rat has no business in speculation or high-risk ventures. I doubt Rat can even do basic math.

you might ask yourself, how did Gimme turn into an A-list saavy investor? Two words: Junior College courses.

You stop. When Jerry hands Lee and extension when he nearing his 30's and has two years left on his deal then you can make comparisons.

Lee is 27, Ratliff was 29.
Lee has made 0 Pro Bowls, Ratliff had made 3 and was coming off a season as 1st team All Pro. He also was a Pro Bowler the year he signed the deal.
We were in a climate of escalating caps and higher overall cap totals.

Your argument is silly so just stop. It is literally foolish.
The Sean Lee deal is just as bad if not worse than the Jay Ratliff deal.
We have control of Lee through any number of means and only signed him early to get him locked in long-term.
Same thinking as with Jay except that was about rewarding excellent play.

The Lee deal MAY work out far better but was EVERY bit as risky and certainly not an example of changing M.O.

Fans are largely whiny, selfish imbeciles. Ratliff may never play another down of football.
He was a GREAT player for us for years at an extreme bargain to the cap and fans can't dogpile this dude enough because he apparently has a serious injury and can't help us.

.BTW, Jerry Signed a 2 year extension for Jason Witten 2 days after the Ratliff one. It included 19m guaranteed and 37m overall. Witten was a few months younger than Ratliff. Was that also a BAD deal???

I'd invest in a decent JC before I'd ever invest in Treasury Bonds right now.

LOL......

I think it was but I'm probably in the minority on this one as well.

you have brought up this once before in our discussion just with different examples so let me put this to bed

sean lee: just turned 27
dez: 24
geno atkins: 25 (whom you brought up previously)

ratliff was 31 in 2011 when he got his extension

the only people a team should be paying that much money to at or after 30 should be QB, OL, (because players at these positions have shown that they can continue to perform at a high level into their mid 30s) or truly elite players (someone like ware)

neither spencer nor ratliff fall into those categories

Yes, let's put it to bed.

Ratliff was 29 when he got his extension, not 31. ((Technically he was 30 by the time it got to the league office)
He was born August 29th, 1981. Extension was first announced late August of 2011. It was official September 3/4....

All Pro is pretty friggin elite. Ratliff was coming off 3 straight pro bowls and an all Pro season when we extended him.

If we're already in the hole for next season and we just added 6 more million of dead money, I guess it doesn't affect us. I'm glad that's cleared up.
we didn't add 6 more. We took 1m off. That's why I made the comment about understanding how the cap works... =)

That's three words. Be careful counting your money - you might want to count twice!!!

No doubt this affected the 2013 draft.

Dallas (mistakeningly) thought they could delay dline a year because they had at least 5 good ones in Ware-Ratliff-Hatcher-Spencer-Crawford.
Right now, only one guy standing...two at most.
I'm amazed at how they are pasting it together so far, but the dline issue put a hard cap how far the team can go...imo.
Last year, it was the oline's limitations as a group (before the defesne was decimated with injuries).
This year, at least right now, it's that dline and lack of depth.

But as they say; one week at a time.

Beat Philly!

actually you are pretty far off so discussion of how the cap works (and how we handle it) would be long and painful.
If Ratliff could have played next year we would have likely paid about ~5m in cap hit for him(after another yearly restructure).
Instead we'll pay 7m in dead money.
Had we kept and cut him after the new NFL accounting cycle we'd have split that 7m over 2 seasons.

So yes, essentially this move was the most expensive possible realistic option for next year's cap.

right, but that wasn't the comment said.

poster 1: we are already over the cap, does this 6.9 m in dead money ADD to it

poster 2: yes it does

me: no it doesn't. Ratliff was scheduled to count 8.2m. Now he counts 6.9. So, we saved 1.3m in cap space.

was the best strategy? Arguable, but I think yes it was. Dez and Tyron are both due conntracts in 2015. This move saves us 30m in cap space from 2015-2017.
