Wilcox is improving every week. He was around the ball a lot today. The tipped pass in the endzone was a thing of beauty!

The tipped pass was a complete fluke. But Wilcox is growing up fast and could be a real baller for us.

How do you guys view our safety situation? Fans on this website confuse me when it comes to their opinions of the safeties. Lots of people make it sound like Church is the best safety we've had since Woodson, then other people make it sound like he is our weak link in the secondary. Wilcox is a rookie but he's played well enough that he might be our guy for the future. So, if you're of the group that believes Church is that good, does that mean we don't have to worry about safety for another 6-7 years?

yeah i'm really liking his potential....as it was mentioned the only thing he needs to improve on is wrapping up because he tends to go for hits first but once he trains himself to do that he should become quite a force back there

I have a lot of faith in him. He is showing more and more. Love it. Like having the 1st Roy Williams back WITH sme coverage skills.

The ball he tipped away was a fluke? He made a great play on it.

That was a billion miles from "a great play." The flukey deflection bounced gently and directly into his hands. He latched on like a baby grabbing a binky. The results were meaningful but it's not a remotely special or talented play. Aside from that play...he is an exciting newcomer to the roster and I'm eager to watch more.

He looks to be more of a keeper at the position than Church. He could be something special at safety...and how long have we been looking for that?

I think they're referencing the pass break up off Desean Jackson in the end zone, not the flukey INT.

It was a nice breakup, iirc.

A lot of what people attribute to luck, I attribute to skill... like when the ball popped out on a play like that, people can say that was luck, but actually having the recognition to go get the ball and 'intercept it' takes skill because it easily could have been a drop. It was overturned, but I like the recognition to make plays like that.

Then we are talking about different plays. I was referring to the ball he swatted/tipped(ran down to get to) away from a sure TD, not the Jason Witten foot, kick deflection-interception that should not have been reversed.

LOL...yes I was referring to the tipped pass to prevent a TD. An amazing play. I agree he needs to wrap up a bit more.

Church, like many players on this team, has had good and bad games this year. People on CZone tend to over-exaggerate how good/bad he is after a game. To me it seems that Church does not have the best cover skills but makes very good tackles (something we've had issues with at S in the past) and is always around the ball. I think he is a solid SS, but I don't see him being the ballhawk FS on our team. I'm not sure why Wilcox isn't the FS because I could see him developing into a "center field" ballhawk type of player. IMO, we should definitely address the safety position in the draft, but I wouldn't do it until maybe the 3rd round after DL and OL.

I just think we have too many other needs to address safety so early in the draft, especially considering we have a young starting tandem and some young reserves in Heath and Matt Johnson (if he ever comes back). IF we address safety, and that's a big if, I don't see it until the 5th or later, unless a must-have falls to us. This doesn't mean we have an elite pair of safeties, but it means it's not a top priority. I think our first 2 or 3 picks go to the DL. I could see them getting a guard in the 3rd or 4th (but no sooner) to replace Waters, who I think they'll try to bring back for at least one more year.

True, but I'm a bit worried about our safety depth. If Church or Wilcox gets injured, who are we putting out there? I'm not sure I trust Heath at the moment and I certainly don't want McCray taking the field.

Wilcox isn't the free safety because he'd have to be responsible for reading routes and he isn't ready for that now.

Hopefully in a year or two. I think we'd be better with Wilcox at FS and Church at SS. I like our secondary. Carr, Scan and Claiborne are all young. Hopefully Claiborne gets it together and starts playing like a true #1.
