What does it mean when your car heater doesn't blow AT ALL?

It's 16 below with the wind in Michigan and my car heater chose now to go out. I'm hoping for a simple fix because if I drive it to the mechanic, not only will I be cold, but the windows will probably fog up without heat.

Check the fuse. If the fan itself isnt blowing that is the most likely culprit.

On my Bonneville, the fan went out while driving in cold and rainy weather I was out of state too. I could feel heat but it just wasn't blowing, I stopped at a rest area checked fuses they were good, did a google search for fan stopped blowing, I found a lot of threads, I found one that said to thump below the fan, my passenger side under glove box. Three swift thumps and fan works again, I make it home, it quit again six or seven months later I finally got it replaced.
So do a google search on your car and fan quit working you may be surprised what you find.

Thank you. I'll try it.

It means it is broke

Ha ha. You guys are funny.

It was the thermostat. I'm glad it was simple and not too expensive. Thanks everybody.

Glad it was a fairly easy fix for you

Are you getting all of the snow that we are getting in Lansing. Sounds like it will be really cold tomorrow. Could get down to -31 below wind chill. I snowblower my drive way 3 times today

Yep it's supposed to be insanely cold tomorrow. My snow guy doesn't come until tomorrow. If I can't get out of my driveway tomorrow, I'm staying home.

Weird that the thermostat would cause the fan to stop working.

Some of the newer vehicles have an inside sensor. Works more like your home's thermostat than the one in the engine. If it doesnt give the input to the computer, the computer doesnt run the heat because it doesn't know the temperature requires it.

Ah automation--just more stuff to break:)

I've been living in Southern Ca since 1980 and not once have I ever had to use my cars heater.

A lot of times, the Thermostat is not broken, it just needs to be flushed. It builds sediment and it will just stop working. If you flush it out, a lot of times, that will fix the problem. Saves you from having to replace it but Mechanics won't always tell you that. It's better for them to replace them.

:D Air conditioning is another story though right?

Not if you live at the beach we rarely get above 80 degrees here. The sea breeze keeps us cool even during the hottest summer months. The only time I need air conditioning is when I'm driving through LA or parts of the valley during July thru Sept.
