News: For Cowboys, no more small-school DBs

Makes sense to me. The big-school DBs play against the big-school and highly touted QBs.

Also, no more little school QBs . . . .

I will be in my bunker if anybody needs me. the password is Richard Widmark.

I thought hIs name was Wittmark?

And tell them the Duke sent you..

No more players from Ouachita Baptist.

Good one! Ouachita Baptist gave us one of the best ever!

I think the whole, "no more small school guys" is silly. The draft, as we all know, is a crap-shoot-educated-guess kind of thing. Scouts and fans alike tend to measure potential draftees against the quality of the opponent, but without having any idea how they would fare against better "big school" opponents, it would be foolish to just rule out any player because of where he went to school. The only way the relationship between school size and NFL ability is that the big schools get the best high school talent, but because people that age mature and grow at different rates, "big school/small school" should not be used as an absolute cut-off line for the draft. I think Larry Allen went to that big school powerhouse, "Sonoma State."

Didn't the we draft a small school DB who we cut who now starts for Carolina and is playing well?

Let the scouts do their work and go from there. 5 may seem like a lot but it's an incredibly small sample size especially with guys who aren't supposed to be blue chippers.

You take the best player...period.
There is a very long list of Pro Bowl and even HOF players that went to so-called "small schools".

I bet Kansas City was glad they didn't follow Archer's advice when they drafted Brandon Carr.

Just off the top of my head, some old and new.....Larry Allen, Walter Peyton, Jerry Rice, Darrell Green, Howie Long, Terrell Owens, Vincett jackson, Cortland Finnegan, Jhari Evans, ...

If it's in the later rounds, I don't see the issue...unless of course, you don't trust your scouts.

i say we take a straw poll of everyone in the room once the draft pick rolls around and if we are tied, jerry can break the tie based on lack of actual football knowledge

how's that for the draft selection process?

Not under this regime. Back in the old days, we were better at scouting. Better at projecting players to new positions, better at identifying athletes.

We have not taken a "project" in the draft and had them pan out. It is not for a lack of trying.

Overall, we need to avoid drafting small school players to begin with. Being a Cowboy is a high pressure position and if you were a big fish in a small pond, it just has not worked out the majority of the time. We end up wilting in high pressure games too much. Give me a player who has played on winning teams, in front of a national audience. We just cannot afford any more projects who need time to "develop". Not with the way we evaluate the roster.

"Yes, teams should avoid small school players like Jahri Evans, London Fletcher, Jared Allen, Joe Flacco, Robert Mathis, and Tony Romo." --Jerry Rice & Walter Payton

For the record, if we have a shot at Khalil Mack, from small school Buffalo, do it.

Agree with this 100%.

I'm skeptical of this Will McClay guy, but if he can end our run of drafting DB's from Devry and ITT Tech, he'll score a lot of points in my book.

The fact that keep drafting "projects" is as big a problem as the fact that they're from a small school though.

This organization has some sort of strange fascination with DB's who are converted wideouts or linebackers and have only been playing the position for like half a season.

It's hard enough to adjust to the NFL as a small school guy, it's got to be even harder when you're still learning your position while doing that.

Sounds eerily familiar

OK, to you it is just a game. Now i half to change my password. The new one is John Payne. If that one is stolen then the line from "Ted": Chris Brown can do no wrong!"

OK, let's be serious and dont mess with the passwords.

So was Boise State a small school when we drafted Scandrick?

IRVING, Texas -- The NFL draft is not until May 8-10 and we will spend plenty of time dissecting players from here, there and everywhere in relation to the Dallas Cowboys.

While you should never speak in absolutes when it comes to the draft, here is one: The Cowboys do not need to draft a defensive back from a small school.

Since 2010, the Cowboys have drafted five defensive backs from small schools and have not seen one pan out yet.

Yet another trash article from ESPN that ignores that football is a team sport.

I'm a big believer in big school drafting. Not only the competition they play against, but the spot light, big TV games, lots of pressure. Being great has as much to do with talent, as it does intelligence and guts. But again, you can find talent anywhere, just make sure you have the best scouting team in the NFL.
