The Wall Street Journal reports that renowned actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was today found dead in his New York City apartment. The WSJ cites the NYPD as the source for the news, noting that circumstances around the 46-year-old actor death are as yet unclear.

Hoffman's career spanned a diverse range of roles, from early work in Boogie Nights, The Big Lebowski, and Magnolia, to his Oscar-winning performance in Capote. More recently, the actor was cast in the role of Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Gamees: Catching Fire. Hoffman was set to reprise his role in the final movies of the trilogy, Mockingjay, but although filming on the first Mockingjay movie is said to be complete, it's unclear what will happen with the final part.

He had a history of drug and alcohol abuse, probably is a factor here :(

Just seeing that he died at age 46 really hits home with me. My Dad passed away at the same age.

Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead of an apparent drug overdose — in the bathroom with a hypodermic needle still in his arm — inside a Greenwich Village home on Sunday morning, cops said.

A personal assistant found Hoffman’s body in an apartment at 35 Bethune St. and called 911 around 11:30 a.m, sources said.

Cops are at the scene and are investigating, sources said.

In 2006, Hoffman publicly admitted that he nearly succumbed to substance abuse graduating from NYU’s drama school, but got sober in rehab.

“It was all that (drugs and alcohol), yeah. It was anything I could get my hands on…I liked it all,” he told “60 Minutes” as the time.

Last year, Hoffman reportedly checked himself into rehab again for ten days after relapsing in 2012.

TMZ said he began using prescription pills, then snorted heroin for about a week before realizing he needed help.

Very sad. He had a huge range as an actor was one of the few that I would watch a movie just because he was in it.

Sad. I liked a lot of the movies he was in. If it was because of a heroin overdose I can't have much sympathy for him. It isn't like the dangers of that drug are some kind of secret.

One of the greatest actors of our time, and that is not an exaggeration. What a shame.

True, but addiction isn't some kind of simple black and white matter.

It is black and white to me. Don't mess with heroin to start with. I've had it offered to me a couple of times and turned it down. I knew the consequences that drug and I wasnt about to tempt the devil.

I have no problem with him doing the drugs. It's his choice, but as I said before, no sympathy.

Neither one of us walked a mile in his shoes. I understand where you're coming from though.
