Former Dallas Cowboys Michael Irvin and Jay Novacek joined ESPN 1250 San Antonio during Super Bowl week. Here are some highlights from the interview.

On the difference between the early '90s Cowboys and now:

Irvin: “If we go down and score, I knew that there was no way Charles Haley was going to allow three third downs without getting a sack. That’s what kills me now. I’m like, ‘Come on defense. One big stop. One big defense on third down. One third down stop.’ Then it’s first down. … Charles Haley, as crazy as he is, I’m telling you he’s not going to let you have three (third down conversions) in any one drive. I don’t have to worry about that.”

Novacek: “The reason we were good and the reason we won Super Bowls is because we knew one of us was going to make a play at the correct time. That’s what we don’t see with the Cowboys now. They’re capable of it, but no one steps up and makes that play. We just knew it. You look in the huddle and I’m talking more offensively, but we saw it on defense all the time.”

I don't agree. We're not nearly there, physically, on defense right now. Maybe to start the year, if we were all healthy, but we never were, and now Hatcher, Rat, and Spencer are gone, or are very likely gone, and Ware is possibly on his way out. We need a significant infusion of talent in order to be competitive, even if we've got the right coaches and the right schemes in place.

No talent with the current squad of players. The Cowboys had 5 to 7 future HOF players back in the 90's? It's hard to win anything at any level with out talent and being a smart player that can score higher than six on a wonderlic test.

This current scouting team is one of the worst in the history of the Cowboys. They should all be purged with no pay. The 2009 draft you should have players in there prime and starting. You had 12 picks and none of them are on the roster right now? Really?

I agree with a lot of what he says. It goes back to the core problem, no identity. The parts don't work, and the players bought in do not work because their is no true purpose.

How can we be there physically when half of the team misses significant time with hamstring injuries year in and year out and appears to be getting worse???

Those teams were good, knew they were good and played with a swagger that only a few on this team exhibit. Those teams were also remarkably healthy - yes we had injuries but nothing like what we have seen here in recent years.

I think most will agree that a team will take on the personality of their coach. Those teams were Jimmy Johnson all the way. He was big on playing mind games, held guys accountable and was as brash as they come. No one was more confident that he was and he thought they were going to win every week and I think the players believed they were going to win every week.

I think the last couple of drafts were decent but that '09 was a debacle. It was like we didn't even attend the draft. How could this management be that out of touch that they would say openly that they were going to draft for special teams??? Are you frigging kidding me??? That was a joke.

I don't think he actually believes they physically there... I think he wants to motivate. I love romo but he HAS to go for the sake of the team

This team desparately needs to loose the taint these players have left on this Franchise.

The guys you! Mention are on the downside of their careers and we need to turn the old guard over as soon as possible..

not try to keep redoing deals,etc.

I'm really disappoined with what this core of players has as their body of work collectively.

IMO,we lack some talent on the Dline but the mental attitude is missing with the team.

Of course you always want that talent, but who is going to get that? Oh wait, it is Will McClay now.

We never got a clear answer on that. Reports were McClay is the new guy. Jerry says it's still Ciskowski. I guess we're going to have to check the background of the war room in May to see where the real power lies this year.

Clearly Garrett is building something very special here. You just cannot see it. And leave Jerry Jones out of it. No factor.
