We should have been more aggressive in looking at DE. Maybe a guy like Willie Young would have helped as a pure pass rusher.

Right now we have one of the worst DL's in the league.

Remember post draft, players get cut. I am sure we will pick up a stopgap at DE after the draft is said and done.

And last year on paper, we had one the best with Spencer-Hatcher-Ratliff-Ware.

Selvie matched Ware's production for 1/10th the cost.
Melton is better or equal to Hatcher and younger.
Hayden goes from 800+ snaps to probably half of that.
Crawford and Bass both can play and keep the rotation fresh.
Mincey and McClain are better than the other 18 guys we ran out there last year.
Add a Donald, Jerrigan, Barr, Ealy early and a couple more guys later and it's much better than last year.

That's the point about those two signings. Those guys are better than the less-than-JAGs that consumed more than a 1,000 snaps last year... And that's not counting the 800+ that Hayden received.

What's it going to be then, eh?

At let's hope these two are bit players just like Hayden should have been. If either are starting and playing a lot, we will have problems.

Winicki's fine with "getting by" along the trenches. If we signed their CB counterparts with the threat of either starting he'd be having a panic attack right now.

Since Carr may be released next offseason... an early round CB would be sweet.

As it stands now, McClain and Hayden probably get most of the reps at the 1 technique.

Yeah.

I've got higher hopes for McClain... Simply because Hayden was so awful. I couldn't imagine McClain being worse. And up to this point in his brief career McClain has been better. Even 600 snaps of McClain at slightly less than average would be better than 800 snaps of Hayden being horrible.

The second thing is that I fully expect the Cowboys to draft a another #1 technique DT later on in the draft. I don't expect starting material but if you had a guy come in and provide a 150 snaps at a slightly less than average performance level, you're still ahead of using Hayden.

They really need both a 1 technique and a backup 3 technique. It's a good chance that they take a player that can play both positions. I think a player like Will Sutton could fill both roles and would probably challenge to start at the 1 technique.

With the ability to "designate" players as June 1st cuts before June 1st, it has minimized the number of players that become available then.

You've got me excited about the new season with all this "can't be any worse" talk, Mike.
