How is it possible that we are done in free agency?
Right now this defense is not improved at all from last year.
Melton replaced Hatch, but Mincey and McClain are jags.
I disagree. We are improved. But how much is the question. It's short-sighted to say we only replaced Hatch with Melton and Ware with Mincey. And, McClain may be a jag, but he's an improvement over Hayden at the 1. Now, Hayden provides some depth at 1.
Bass and Crawford both return from injury as does Lee. We're also another year into the new defense.
So far this is the DL:
Selvie/Mincey
Melton/Bass
McClain/Hayden
Crawford
Already this is better than what we were trying to field at the end of last season. So, yes, there is improvement.
At LB:
Carter/Wilbur
Lee
Holloman/Durant
Now, I am still not satisfied with what we have, but to say we haven't improved is ridiculous. I don't think we need to throw money at every remaining FA left. We do need to still draft heavily on the defensive end. Imagine if we can add Donald, Barr, or Jernigan along with Crichton, Jeffcoat, or Martin. Then, we're not looking too bad.
Plus, there's still the second wave of FA after the draft. I would expect us to look at filling any remaining holes then. I'm not proclaiming us a Super Bowl caliber defense just yet. But we will be better.
