IRVING, Texas -- The NFL draft is about a month away and we'll begin digging more into the Dallas Cowboys' interests in 2014 going forward, but let's review the past five drafts. The 2009 draft was one of the worst in team history. With 12 picks, the Cowboys should have been able to capitalize on the number of selections to a roster that was considered deep at the time even if they did not have a first-round pick because of the Roy Williams' trade with the Detroit Lions.

It was awful but as we discussed at length in here, it was a horrible draft overall.
 
2009 was just a horrible, horrible draft for Dallas. They botched that draft in just about any way that a draft can be botched.

Andy Levitre shows the dangers of moving back for extra picks. Had they stayed put and taken Levitre, they would have come out of that draft with at least one career Cowboy, and he would have been a good one. He would be a really good guard for Dallas for about a decade.

IMO, if you can at least come out of a draft with 1 really good player, then at least you got something. Dallas ended up with absolutely nothing from that draft. I just think it would have been better to move up some by bundling picks. Target guys you really like that fit your system.

Dallas really liked Max Unger from that draft and he went to Seattle just a couple of picks ahead of where Dallas was prepared to take him. Had they used a pick or two from later rounds, they could have jumped up a few spots and insured they got him.

If they could have managed to take Levitre and then bundle picks to move up and get Unger, they would have come out of that draft with two stalwarts for their offensive line. Those two guys alone would have been better than 12 guys that couldn't play ****.

I know there will be plenty of guys telling me that it is hindsight - and it is - but that is just one example of an abstract concept that I happen to believe in. Quality is better than quantity when it comes to the draft IMO.

That is why I feel that Dallas should move up the few picks it would take to insure they get Aaron Donald. So many 3rd and 4th round picks end up never doing anything. Right now a 4th round pick looks really good, but after we take someone, there is a good chance he only sticks on the team for a couple of years and never amounts to much. Donald, on the other hand, is about as sure a thing as you could find for a Marinelli 3-tech DT. He has the physical tools, the football demeanor, the character and the production that is ideal and the next best guy is way, WAY down the charts from him.

If Dallas stays put at 16 and takes a guy like Ealy, in all likelihood they aren't getting a player that is just a little below Donald in ability - they are getting someone that is light years away from what Donald could potentially do for Marinelli and Dallas.

It isn't a popular opinion and there are times when a move down works out great (like last year with Frederick and Williams)... but I prefer the way Jimmy Johnson did it. He used his picks to be proactive and go get the guys he wanted for his team. He targeted fast, physically talented guys who loved football and the contact that comes along with it, and then he bundled picks to go get them if at all possible. He added 3rd and 4th round picks all the time to jump up just a little to take guys like Maryland, Woodson, Emmitt, Stepnoski, etc. I never heard anyone complaining about it. Nobody ever missed the 3rd we added to our pick to move up for Emmitt Smith.

Anyway, I just hope they start to target guys they really like and do everything possible to move up and get them. IMO, you end up with better drafts that way. Because really, getting one or two really good guys from a draft is better than most teams drafts are.

It's also a lesson in BPA. They could have taken LeSean McCoy with that pick also. They had McCoy ranked as a 1st round pick but didn't draft him because they already had Felix and Barber.

It's the reason that they should probably draft a player like WR Evans if he falls to 16.

If Barber and Felix are on the team...there is NO way you can draft LeSean McCoy

Back in 1970 Dallas had Calvin Hill, Walt Garrison and Dan Reeves in the backfield and still drafted Duane Thomas. I think your point is right on the mark.

Note really but Dallas had their chance to picl 1 quality player from this
draft...especially in the 2nd round. 3 starting OL was pick in the second round,they were all in Dallas range.
Dallas played the numbers game that year while they should have played for quality.

And almost as importantly, learn to play their cards right once they've made such a move.

But drafting McCoy would have made Barber expendable. Besides Barber was nothing more than a bruising short yardage back. He made some espn highlights rio but he never rush for over 1k....he was not worth the 40m+ we spent on him.
 
2009 draft class should be at the age of 28-29? Prime. Sad to see nobody from that draft class is on the roster.

In hindsight, he was not worth the money he got...but he also was underpaid earlyu on. he energized the team and 2007 was our best team since the early 90s.

All I am saying is that a sport like football with 53 man rosters and a salary cap makes it imperative to manage the roster correctly. And if Barber and Felix are on the team...drafting LeSean McCoy would have never happened. The truth...again in hindsight...is that felix should have never been drafted..BUT....BUT because he was..passing on McCoy was inevitable. Plus...Garrett overruled Wade on Felix..and Garrett was the head coach in waiting. Wade wanted Chris Johnson. Garrett coveted the versatility in Felix.
