News: Miller: Cowboys LB Bruce Carter on Why He Struggled in 2013

....
And what on Earth do you mean by 'less responsibility?' Are you saying that the Tampa 2 is more complex?

I'm willing to be more patient, I guess.

Just chiming in here, I do think that the scheme we are running has a LOT more keys than our previous defenses. Ryan's defense was difficult because you had to know your responsibility in the scheme, the 4-3 Under is just as complicated but for the different reason of having to understand what each reaction is based on what the offense shows. I think that definitely slowed Carter down in his play.

Using the scheme as an excuse for not getting off blocks or being able to cover? Really? Come on man.

There's a big difference between explaining why he struggled and making excuses.

I really like Bruce Carter and hope he can turn it around. If I'm not mistaken, Ryan Shazier is one of the people the Cowboys may be targeting early in the draft, and if they do, that could spell the end for Carter. Furthermore, I am really hoping they will address the DL 1st, if the player in question is, at least, close to being BPA.

I can be chastised by the masses later I suppose, but count me in as someone who feels he will be leaps and bounds better in 2014. He went through the same issues his rookie season and then the lights went on in 2012. Looking back, it should not have been as surprising that he struggled last year. The guy just needs a little longer to grasp the mental aspects of his assignments.

Not in this case. His "explanations" about his biggest weaknesses are fundamentals of every scheme. Things three years in he should be adequate at by now.

Here's really hoping. If the Cowboys do in fact address the DL early and often and are able to pick up some pieces that prove to be steals later in the draft, the Cowboys very would could be a contender this year with an improved Bruce Carter...I seriously doubt that all those pieces fall into place, but like I said before, here's hoping!

Ok. So he's struggling with the fundamentals of the new scheme. I don't think anybody disputes that. He's not even disputing it. It is what it is, and it might mean no extension in Dallas, but it's fair game for him to address when asked about his disappointing play last year.

He is struggling with fundamentals period. Not something that should be happening at this point. If you cant shed blocks, you can play LB in the NFL. If you cant cover you cant play LB in the NFL. Has nothing to do with scheme.

That I don't agree with. But it makes little difference to me. He's got to fix it, or lose his job. If he thinks the issue was scheme and is addressing that instead of working on fundamentals as you suggest, I hope he's right and you're wrong.

It don't matter Bruce.

Here in Dallas, even if you cannot shed opponents and even if you cant tackle and efen if you are not bright, there is a home for you here where the underachievers get a second, third, fourth and fifth chance before Jerra wake up and say "what tha . . .?"

He reacted slowly to that combination outside. He bit on the fake screen. He said he struggled adjusting from inside to outside. You just showed a route combination that he would not have seen playing inside. When he was playing 3-4 before, Spencer would jam that TE and he was great at it.

Myers literally walked in for a TD

This was Week 12, not Week 1. He played OLB in college, and he absolutely would have seen this as an ILB in the 3-4. He had a lot of coverage responsibility in the 3-4.

Not being able to shed blockers is a problem for carter. That's a fundamental skill he needs to work on. Regardless of scheme.

I just re-watched the last Eagles game....And talk about playing with no heart. I've seen guys play faster in a 1/2 speed/ no contact practice. That was absolutely atrocious considering your playing for your playoff lives.

Personally...I'd have no problem flushing all of our Lbers and starting new. Carter and Mr Glass (Sean Lee) can hit the road.

In going back and watching some of his game tape from last year, he looks like he really doesn't want to be out there.

Its one thing to be confused by the scheme, it another thing to give minimal effort and just go through the motions.

I hope he turns it around this year because if he doesn't it will be his last in Big D.

This is exactly the sort of cop out I expected from you
This is Carter's contract year , so of course there will be "improvement" and you will be in here expounding on that
All the while it will have nothing to do with coaching or scheme but everything to do with money

lol you don't even know what a cop out is. me saying yes there is blame to be found all the way at the top is not a cop out. OTOH, copping to 'contract year' to explain any positive outcome is the epitome of a copout.
