Bob McGinn's Scout's Comments on Zack Martin

Would have preferred the trade down... probably why Stephen Jones was slamming down the phone.

Should be a really good long-term player for us but not sure we get much better right now.
When Barr, Donald and Shazier went off the board defensive options were limited to Safety or a LB with injury concerns.
Tough break that we couldn't get Browns to bite in move up for Johnny.

I think he slammed it down because he lost the connection, literally hanging up on whomever he was talking to.

Trenches are overrated. Not saying they're not important. Just overrated.

Yea, right after they welched ona previously discussed deal in all likelihood.

The number of DL going off the board before we draft again is straight alarming.

We took the BPA but it probably won't work out well for us this season.
This team needed a pass rusher badly and we missed on our targets and couldn't get down to the secondary ones.

Could be a scary bad 2nd round leading up to us tomorrow if the DL run continues.

Our OL was terrible and we went 8-8, our OL was good and we went 8-8.
Not sure making a good OL, very good is going to get us off that mark.
Tho like with San Fran it may pay off in 3 years when we retool the team and the OL has matured.

Proof that people will not be happy no matter what. Great pick. Exciting to see this o-line, something that can get you championships.

Right. All those 5-11 and 8-8 teams were set in the trenches. If we'd only had that all important nickle cornerback or 2nd wide receiver.
It starts in the trenches. Anybody that pays any attention to football knows that.

Haven't seen anyone say they dislike the pick actually.
He's a safe pick and a BPA pick.

Problem for me is a trade down would have been by far preferred.
I like Sua-Filo better than Martin as a guard.
And pick 16 for me has to be a truly elite OG.
Not sure Martin is that.
He's an older incoming player with great technique walking in the door so he'll be fine but his ceiling isn't where Warmack/Cooper is and that's what I want at pick 16 in an OG.

Cowboys may well get great value by using Martin at RG for a year then moving him to RT for the remainder of his career.
This could turn out very, very well for Dallas... but that's more a long term look.
And if I was looking long term Manziel would have been my guy.

If nothing else I'd take Manziel and see if Cleveland/Zona or someone else then bites.

No. Norm is saying he slammed down the phone because he had Shazier's agent on the phone, and the agent told Stephen that Pitt had just called saying they were going to take Shazier. Shazier was going to be the pick @ #16, but when he went off the board @ #15 we had to "settle" for a future pro bowl OG/OT in Martin.

This pick was an absolute no brainer. Plug him in and play at a high level for 10 years. Great job by the FO.

The trenches allow you to win games... but they don't do the winning.
It's like a having a great defensive center in basketball that rebounds and protects the paint but doesn't score.

Hugely effective core piece but needs help to win.

If the Cowboys field another historically bad defense the OL won't matter.
When you fall behind by 20 and are just in spread 3 step drop mode OL is marginalized.

thanks for that info.
i was listening to CBS at that time.

not sure Martin is a future Pro Bowler but he is a very safe pick as a long-time starter.

Fail. Seattle and SF are the two best teams in the league now. Why? Look in the trenches.

Right on the money JT. At least things worked out alright.

He may not be as powerful as Warmack or athletic as Cooper but he moves well in the running game and is the best pass protector of the three. He could actually play LT if they had to. He's definitely better than DeCastro who guys were nuttin over a few years ago.

He's a lot like Frederick, just a lot more athletic.
