Are we sold on a Demarco Murray Contract Extension?

He's 26 years old (February). He's an extremely vital part of our offense. He's a capable runner btw the tackles, catcher out the backfield, and blocker for Romo. I know some believe you should never pay a running back (outside of an AP talent) in today's NFL. Honestly, I sort of agree with that sentiment. Since we are just now getting out of cap hell, it would be nice to find a cheap replacement for him but we have yet to do that the last few drafts, putting a little more pressure on us to resign him this year. Is there a "team friendly" deal that works for you guys knowing that Dez/Tyron are coming up on new deals as well? We'll need to show some discipline and make a tough decision on one of the three right?

I like him...but let's see what he produces this year.

Murray gets my vote for a contract extension, but it is depended upon how healthy he makes it through the 2014 season. Last season was his best healthwise with 14 starts. Running back is a bruising position, but improving on his durability will only improve his status with the team going forward.

Murray is a good not great RB. If he's willing to accept something like 3/9 sure extend him. If he wants big money then wave good bye to him.

It all depends on the contract. If he saves us more than the value of a second or third round pick by extending him, then I'm for it. I'd rather use those picks on defense next season, or on a developmental QB. But he can be replaced by a relatively low-value resource, so you can't afford to give him too much on a three year extension.

I suspect running backs and their agents see what's happening in recent drafts and that gets reflected in the contracts they encourage their 26 year old clients to sign, though. He shouldn't be all that expensive.

Cowboys don't seem to be. At this point, all I've heard is that they are not interested in giving him another Contract, for the money being discussed. IDK.

I don't believe Murray warrants an extension. It's not so much that he isn't a good player, but I believe we can draft a RB next year that can give us similiar production and hopefully stay healthy.

I don't think that's realistic. Here is a list of some of the biggest RB contracts. I think he's comparable to Forte.

I've felt all along the Cowboys would extend Murray but at a reasonable price. The RB postion is being undervalued leaguewide like we've never seen before.

No more than $3.5 million per year and no more than 3 years. Other than that, good luck. We all saw how RBs are falling in the draft these days. You can now get a good one that would have been a 1st or 2nd rounder in the past all the way down in the 4th or 5th.

Good data. Though I expect that APY curve is sloping steadily and dramatically down from here on out. But I wouldn't touch an extension for him at those prices. Even Chris Johnson's deal with the Jets this season looks rich for me (I'd pay that for Murray, but just barely, and I wouldn't have signed Johnson for that money).

Devalued, for sure. I'm not sure it's undervalued. If putting a second or third round back on the field gets you the same offensive production in terms of scoring, then it's the case that RBs just aren't worth very much money in today's NFL. It's kind of sad, but there's enough data out there to indicate that it's definitely what's happening.

I'm not sure you can let him walk if he stays healthy, the guy really does have some skills.

If he will take a reasonable Sean Lee type deal that has some injury incentives in there then it might be a good idea. When healthy and actually given the ball, Murray has done some really good work.

Well if they aren't gonna extend him they need to do a hell of a lot better than Randle to replace him. Now you have exactly one draft to do it.

I agree. I doubt Randle is even on the team this year. Very underwhelming player.

Ideally you'd like to have your running back of the future already on the roster in Murray's final season. The fact that we're kinda going blind into his final year and we didn't really target a running back in the draft, makes me think we're intent on re-signing him.

I think CJ got 4-4.5 mill a year? I think that's very fair for Demarco. He's a crucial element to this team. You saw the offense deteriorate when he was out. You saw his versatility on the game winner in Washington. I'd like us to tag team him with a legitimate bruising back to help keep him healthy.
