Are we sold on a Demarco Murray Contract Extension?

I don't believe Murray warrants an extension. It's not so much that he isn't a good player, but I believe we can draft a RB next year that can give us similiar production and hopefully stay healthy.

How did that work with Randel?

I don't think that's realistic. Here is a list of some of the biggest RB contracts. I think he's comparable to Forte.

I don't think Forte is a good comp. 1500+ yards from scrimage average for his first 4 years. Murray 1100+ yards from scrimmage for his first 3 years. Demarco is important to the offense, and resigning him isn't a guarantee that he's going to be a major part of the offense. Injury prone players tend to get injured. Chris Johnson plays more and produces at a similar rate to Murray.

Aging players who are already injury prone scare me. they just tend to get hurt more and more.

For Forte money? Heck no. I'd give him Ryan Matthews type money, but he's just too unreliable to guarantee any kind of significant amount of $ to in my opinion. Especially with the way the draft is going for RB's.

I think CJ got 4-4.5 mill a year? I think that's very fair for Demarco. He's a crucial element to this team. You saw the offense deteriorate when he was out. You saw his versatility on the game winner in Washington. I'd like us to tag team him with a legitimate bruising back to help keep him healthy.

That's very fair for us, not so much fair for him. He's a better player than that. Should at least get Jonathon Stewert money. lol

Let us see what Murray can do behind an improved O line.

Mein mind feel that he half not run yet behind a capable and consistent-performing line.

This year will tell us if Murray is for real or whether he half tricked us like Felix half. I do thin that Murray will blossom like that ugly girl miriam Bleeck girl in the sitcom.

I don't know why you wouldn't extend him. Let's look at the facts:

1. He's a top 5 RB when healthy and given the ball.

2. We just invested 3 1st round picks on O-line.

3. We have absolutely no decent depth behind Murray.

4. We have a 34 year old QB who can't do it all on his own.

5. Garrett says our improved O-line will improve the worst defense in franchise history by allowing us to control the clock.

6. He's only 26 years old and hasn't had as much wear and tear as other RBs his age.

7. Without a running game we're a horrible defense and a one -dimensional offense.

Murray gives our offense balance and takes pressure off our defense. I'd argue he's the most valuable player on the team besides Romo. And the guy pumps life into the team the same way Barber used to. He's quite possibly my favorite player on the team and by far the most underrated player by the fans.

When healthy, he is a top 5 back in the league.

Don't dispute me. He had one of the highest YPC in the league , and had a very good year in which he was very underutilized by Garrett.

If he goes on a team that pounds the rock properly, he will be up there for the league leaders in total yards.

No need to dispute you..... http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/rb

Sean Lee got paid, why shouldn't Murray?

I think people are buying into the lie that RBs aren't important because they don't go high in the draft. There's also this false belief that RBs are easy to find. Couldn't be farther from the truth. There are fewer great RBs in this league than franchise QBs.

Exactly. Great post to pull it all together.

I would run him ragged this season and let him test FA in 2015. If the market is as cold as this past off season he may sign off for short and cheap. Otherwise, go with the rb by commitee approach. Oh and cut Randle now. Comb through the backs we signed in UDFA and determine if a pick should be used in the 15' draft. Like many have reitirated, the position just doesn't warrant the pay outside of the APs. Will he be the last dominant back to put up those types of numbers? The way of the league is cyclical, so probably not forever, but in the near future, he is it. CJ had a couple of good seasons but wouldn't want his inconsistent running style to be the center piece of a modern offense. Too easy to fall behind and have little to no options to catch up.

He's 26 years old (February). He's an extremely vital part of our offense. He's a capable runner btw the tackles, catcher out the backfield, and blocker for Romo. I know some believe you should never pay a running back (outside of an AP talent) in today's NFL. Honestly, I sort of agree with that sentiment. Since we are just now getting out of cap hell, it would be nice to find a cheap replacement for him but we have yet to do that the last few drafts, putting a little more pressure on us to resign him this year. Is there a "team friendly" deal that works for you guys knowing that Dez/Tyron are coming up on new deals as well? We'll need to show some discipline and make a tough decision on one of the three right?

the position is so under-valued now because RB shelf life has increasingly diminished. Your far better off drafting every few years then extending contracts unless your talking Peterson or McCoy.

I'm sold on Murray being a very good RB, I hope Dallas can get him resigned when we get to that point. Much will have to do with his demands

I don't know SF has had Gore 9 years, Balt with Ray Rice 6 years, Forte and the Bears 6 years and Lynch with Sea for 7 years. As far as I can see Lynch is still a main weapon on that Seahawks team. I think people do get caught up in this is a passing league without looking at some winning teams and SB teams who are running the ball quite well and have RB that make major contribution to their teams success.

I am, we probably beat Denver and a handful of other teams last year if we decide to hand him the ball..

Never heard of Randel. Joseph Randle is a 2nd year back that was serviceable for us when we needed him. Are you giving up on him after 1 year?
Rbs show flashes almost instantaneously even if they aren't ready for prime time. Randle doesn't have a 2nd gear.

Murray was available in the 3rd round despite his talent because he projected as a one-contract player. If he wants Ben Tate money then yes something can be done there, but the risk needs to be minimal based on the shelf life of RBs and the durability concerns he's had in the past. Not to mention he's had too many fumbles in critical situations (vs Philly last year in the red zone, vs Pittsburgh and the Saints in 2012 in goal-to-go situations) to grant a max running back contract to.
