It's the final year of his rookie deal, and this may be one of the tougher decisions the organization has had to make in a while. Murray is 26 years old, coming off his 1st Pro Bowl season, and was one of the most efficient RBs in the NFL last year with a YPC over 5. He seems to be a perfect fit for our zone run scheme and with the addition of Martin to an already impressive young OL, we should expect that trend to only be on the upswing.

A lot of people like to say RBs have become devalued in this league, as there hasn't been one selected in the 1st Round in the last two drafts (although the counter argument, which is probably just as valid, is there wasn't a stud RB in either of those drafts). The other argument is you can find good RBs later in the draft (although we seem to be one of the only teams that has trouble with that philosphy, as Murray become only the 2nd RB to top 1000 yards since E. Smith last did it for us, Julius Jones in 2006 was the other.)

I'd be happy to give Murray a 4-year/16-20mil type of contract, with incentives sprinkled in to make sure we protect ourselves. He's probably one of the top 5 players on this team and is still very young... when we use him effectively this is a different offense and we play our best football. I just don't think it's very easy to replace that type of talent if you let him walk, especially since we have nothing in-house that would be his successor... it would put pressure on the FO to draft for need fairly high in 2015.

I say pay him, he's still young, plays hungry and is a tempo setter.

I'd give him a 4 year deal for good money and let him make his mark behind our rrtooled offensive line. I could see him getting 1800+ yards and 15tds with enough carries.

Unless he goes off this year. Idk if I resign him. This upcoming class is supposed to be loaded w running backs.

I wouldn't be against giving Murray a contract, but it needs to be incentive laden like Lee's and you also need a capable backup. I think Murray is one of the top backs in the league when healthy and even though we are considered a pass first offense - he should play a large role in our game plan.

Lol he'd be lucky to get 1000 yards this year. We just don't run the ball. Hopefully linehan changes that though. If we are to resign him, have it be like Lee's contract.

Jerry has been burned a lot in recent years but this will be beyond stupid for so many reasons.

I could see it...

...if our offensive regime had given any indication that they will ever give him that volume of carries or if he had ever stayed healthy enough to do that.

I wouldn't be against it. I didn't like extending Sean Lee, but I view their cases as entirely different. For one, I expect a RB to miss 2-3 games a year, just because of the wear and tear they take. That's not to say a MLB doesn't take a beating too, but I just expect more injuries for a RB. I guess the reason is because the RB is the one getting slammed to the ground, not the one doing the slamming. That being said, based on my criteria where I give a "pass" for a RB missing 2-3 games, Murray only really had one year where he missed significant time, two years ago when he missed 6 games. He missed 3 games his rookie year, 6 his sophomore year, and 2 last year. Just to be safe, I'd have him play out this season and see if he can play at least 13 games.

Sean Lee, on the other hand, was coming off a season where he missed 10 games when we gave him the big extension. Then he went on to miss 5 games last season, and now 16 (likely) this season. So after a relatively healthy rookie and sophomore year (missed 1 game as a rookie, 2 as a sophomore) he went on to miss 10 games, 5 games, and 16 games. He missed a cumulative 2 out of the past 3 seasons. I don't mind missing a game here and there, but don't give a guy a huge extension coming off missing 10 games. Have him go a season or two without missing more than a game or two.

i think 1800 and 15 could be done if you consider all purpose yards and not just rushing.

murray has great hands, and linnehan will want to use him similar to bush.

I would not pay him.

At this point, I am leaning toward not paying Dez either.

This team may be on the precipice of another wilderness of Jerry looking for a franchise qb.

By the time they get one (a franchise qb) again, if he can get one, it will be too late for Murray and Dez and they will be aging vets with bloated contracts.

This is the core the team should build around going forward:

Terrance Williams
Gavin Escobar
Travis Frederick
Zack Martin
Tyron Smith
Demarcus Lawrence

Hopefully, after this season we can add more names to this list (e.g., Claiborne, Crawford, etc.)

But if this team is truly rebuilding, it will think twice about Dez and Murray extensions.

That said, I think both will get big extensions from the FO.

He went over 1,000 last year in only 14 games. 1,121 yards with 9 TD

League best 5.2 yds/carry while being underutilized, undefeated when he gets 20+ carries, retooled offensive line, good blocker, good receiver out of the backfield, great intensity and lockerroom presence...

He deserves a new contract and more carries.

I think he's starting to hit his stride. I think he goes for 1500 yds, 12 tds this yr, and his price goes up after this season.

Why would you add Claiborne and Crawford, both unproven, to the core of players to build around yet let dez and murray, both proven and improving every season, walk?

I would not resign him until I know he can stay healthy.

You can put the Franchise Tag on him before free agency starts next offseason but I prefer letting him walk (due to his past injuries) and drafting another tailback.

I would not sign him without first letting him test the market unless he will take $3 million a year for three years. No more and no longer. You can now get a 1st round calibre RB in the 2nd-4th rounds. I like Murray and hope he stays in Dallas but I wouldn't give him big money because the market no longer calls for it and he can be replaced cheaply.
