“For that matter, the offense wasn’t and the kicking game wasn’t (what it needed to be),” Garrett said. “So we have to, as coaches, pull back a little bit, provide some perspective on it, understand who’s playing, what their experience is to this point, all of that; but having said that, there’s plenty of stuff to work on when you watch that tape.”

Here is the article http://www.nbcdfw.com/blogs/blue-star/Garrett-Not-Happy-with-the-Defense-270776141.html

Here are the highlights. Quoting Mr. Red Ball. I ain't making this stuff up and I am not a quitter. But it does look like Mr. Garrett is already politicking to keep his job by deflecting the problem onto Mr. Marinelli.

Let’s start from top to bottom,” Garrett told the team's official website. “The discipline wasn’t very good, the gap control wasn’t very good, it wasn’t very physical, we didn’t tackle very well, we didn’t run to the ball well enough, we didn’t make enough plays. We made one play on the ball that was significant, but we didn’t make any plays that made a difference in the game.”

God forbid the head coach should hold anyone else accountable...

Was anything he said wrong? Even Marinelli came out and said essentially the same thing. Admitted he did a poor job getting the team ready.

How dare you put things back into context!

that is not blaming Marinelli it is saying what we all saw vs SD. Guys did not tackle well, guys were not playing disciplined and keeping gap control. Had he said it is all Marinelli fault then you might have something.

Nothing Garrett said was untrue If you continue to ready he it goes on to say

Garrett’s criticism wasn’t limited to the defense, however.

What Garrett said was factual and what he expects is for the staff to look at what happened and work with players to correct is, that is kind of the job they have.

I hear you. The point is that there is no way that Marinelli can make lemonade out of the lemons that Jerruh and Red Ball have provided him. The front seven will be awful all year long and this will be a very long season. The Pokes may not win 5 games this year. Sad, really, I always have had hope for the future of the team. Not this year, I have seen enough already. This is like watching a train wreck in slow motion. There is nothing we can do but grin and bear it.

That is your prediction, I think it will be much better than what we saw vs SD. I think having Melton and Selvie in the lineup as well as these younger guys continuing to learn and improve will provide Marinelli the talent. For many of these guys last weeks game was their 1st and a lot of mistakes were made many of them which can be corrected. As I said I don't expect top 10 this season but I do expect a much improved over last years group

Not that i'm not agreeing with you but your offense always has to out score the other's offense. That's the basic principle of football.

You have to outscore the other team and 99.9% of the time people do that because their offense out score the other offense.

You do realize there is a difference in scoring more points than your opponent and having to outscore your opponent, right? Quit being so simplistic.

Did Seattle score more points than Denver in the Super Bowl? Yes. Did they have to outscore them? No. Outscore them is more of matching them point for point and keeping up.

By your logic, defense can never win games because technically, it's all about offense. And that's not true at all. Seattle didn't have to outscore NO or SF in the NFC playoffs. Their defense played a huge role in stopping those offenses. The same offense Dallas gave up a record 40+ first downs, too.

But to the OP's question, no he should not quit. That never looks good in any profession. To just quit because the deck is stacked against you. If he gets blamed for their performance and gets fired, so be it. But quitting looks much worse than being fired.

Defense, unless it scores, technically can not win a game. If your defense holds them to 0 points, doesn't score themselves, and your offense doesn't score then you can't win. Football really is that simplistic. People try and turn it into some complicated matter. It's not.

Your defense needs to be able to hold teams to a decent point total (around 20 points) and your offense needs to do it's job and go out there and score 28+ points. If you can have a defense, like Seattle, that can be amazing and make it really easy on your offense then that is awesome and icing on the cake.

However, Marinelli probably deserves some blame here as well. The league is now more about good safety play than it is about good cornerback play. The corners are more there for tackling purposes because the league is about short passes that will be completed. It's about bringing the receiver down quickly. But, Marinelli doesn't seem to be big on finding that elite safety and would rather get by with Church, Wilcox and Heath.

YR

I can't tell you how much I agree with this. Been saying it for awhile.

I don't know how anyone can blame Marinelli, though. It's not like he's running the draft room. There's no doubt he'd rather have better players than he does, but it's not like he has much control over that. The huge resources spent on corners happened under Ryan.

The 2013 draft has a lot to do with this. I still think Jerry was the main driver behind using our first three picks on offense when that was already the strength of the team. Why? To try to be even more "Romo friendly" and cater to the player he just gave a massive contract to... And probably even to help the offensive-minded head coach he's had a crush on for over a decade.

This is exactly my point. Marinelli is a very good d-line coach. He has very little to work with, udfas, castoffs, never weres and won't bes. Thanks to Jurrah, the talent pool he is coaching is sub-standard. How can he make this work with the ingredients he was forced to mix into a feast? I love me some Marinelli, but he is doomed on this team.
