I know, yet another Johnny Football thread.. but I found this interesting. Here I thought Jerry finally made a smart decision in passing up Manziel in the draft when he fell into our laps. But, looks like it might have been quite the contrary.

Jim Dent:

"I could just see Jones grabbing Manziel with the 16th choice of the first round," Dent writes. "I wrote a book about Jerry Jones in 1995 titled 'King of the Cowboys.' I know the Boss Hog. I knew that Jones' hands were shaking when the Cowboys went on the clock with Manziel still on the board. I could envision Jones scribbling the name of Johnny Manziel on the draft card. Indeed, all of these things happened.

"As it turned out, Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones had snatched the Manziel card straight out of his dad's hand. Otherwise, Jerry would have drafted him and JFF would have sat for at least three years behind Tony Romo."

-No way of confirming this, but it just sounds like something Jerrah would do. Could you imagine the media circus if Manziel was our backup right now? Look at home much pub the Browns are getting right now. Now imagine that tenfold. It would be a circus.

BTW, good chance the story is fake seeing how nobody in the War Room is actually dealing with cards.

Stephen would have had a laundry list of potential contracts he'd have to rework to take Johnnie..

I could see him going thru all the permutations it would have taken to draft and pay Manziel at #16..

..and I could see the son blocking such a financially suicidal move such as drafting Manziel.

Atta Boy..

Stephen..

meet our new GM..

working behind the scenes..

Gotta love it.hahhahaha.

I have a really stupid question. Just how in the hell did little Johnny get the "Football" attached to his name...Johnny Football?

I mean, the damn kid is nothing special that I can tell.

Yea this could easily be a ploy by Jim, a faux story to rouse the crowd and sell some books. Wouldn't be surprised.

No one is buying this story. Draft card is submitted in NY.

Didn't Steven make a joke on draft day about snatching the card from Jerry? I think he did.

Tony's on record already saying the team was not going in the direction of Manziel, no matter what, in that first round. FWTW.

Hey at least we would've had the flashiest bench warming QB in the NFL.

Yes, the Cowboys were close to drafting Johnny Manziel. How close?

Very close.

“I want you to know that almost as I was handing in the card, it was that close to putting that Manziel card in. It was that close,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Sunday on NFL Network, via Clarence E. Hill, Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I looked over to my son, Stephen . . . and I said, ‘I took the right pick. [Zack Martin] was the top player by three players on our board at the time that we were sitting there looking at [Manziel]. . . . The question was, ‘Could we make it work with Tony Romo during the period of time that we are going to have Tony?’ And by the way, my expectations are that Tony will be our quarterback several years to come as we move along.”

If/when Romo goes down, we'll wish we had drafted him, or someone else. We have got to start putting together our plan for life after Romo.

Now that I think about it a second. What if Jerry thinks he has to have the card on hand to make the pick?

Whether or not that' true doesn't really matter. If Jerry thinks he can't make a pick if the card is absent, we may have a way to trump him without him knowing it.
