So far this season

Defense is giving up 360 yards per game for 11th most in the league

69 points given up for 13th in the league (and that is with a 3 way tie for 10th)

23 points per game average which is 13th worse in the league (and this is with a 3 way tie for 10th)

24 penalties on defense which is tied for 7th worst in the league

Total yards of penalties 227 which is 5th worst in the league

Of course it is probably an improvement from last year...but it is clear that it is not that good.

The offense (minus the turn overs) is good enough to win us games even if the defense is bad that day.

I don't think the defense is good enough to win us games if the offense is bad that day.

Last year we were going through Dlinemen all year. We still have not had our Dline completely healthy yet.
This year it seems like we are going through LBs.

This is what I expected the first half of the season but I do think they will get better as long as there are no major injuries. The young guys will improve and help is on the way in the form of Spencer and Lawrence.

Some more.

Sacks

Bruce Carter has 1
Rolando McClain has 1
Kyle Wilber has 0.5
Henry Melton has 0.5

We have a total of 3 sacks and 2.5 of them are from LBs

INTs

Barry Church has 1
Mo Claiborne has 1
Bruce Carter has 1
Rolando McClain has 1

We have a total of 4 INTs with the LBs getting half of them.

So even with us having troubles with injuries to the LB...It seems they are the ones who are making most of the plays for the two big stats on Defense.

Well if we can get Ro, Durant, and Spence healthy, and now Scandrick should be back in the groove, our D should improve.

We will need it to against the Saints on Sunday.

I fully expected ups an downs with this defense. What I am most proud of is how the defense made some key plays to help the team win. Hutchins stuffing the runner on 4th and 1, Carter int return for a TD and Claiborne who was having a poor day did not get down on himself and helped the Cowboys seal the deal with a big int. The defense could have just gone into a shell but they didn't they keep fighting throughout the game and stood up to help the team. Lot of work ahead of them and hopefully we can get Spencer and Lawrence back soon to help provide some type of pass rush that was pretty much nonexistent thus far this season.

I think this improves as Spencer and D-Law get healthy and on the field. They should open some things for Melton as well.

There is no question that this is the worst pass rushing front I've ever seen with this team. It is laughably bad.

It is very bad and I don't think Spencer will do much because frankly I don't expect him to play much. Even if he does play I doubt it makes much of a difference.

Until that time Coach Rod has to scheme his LBs to get the QB sacks and I would imagine he will add the occasional Saftey or CB to get after the QB.

Complicating the issue is that the secondary is just not good enough to cause many coverage sacks.

Creating sacks will rely on HOPE at this point.

Hope that Spencer can get healthy and return to form. Hope that Melton can get healthy and return to form. Hope that Our Rookie Lawrence can come on strong after he gets healthy, Hope that Bishop and Coleman can grow.

There is no real healthy starter on this Dline that scares any team and has proven they can be a force for us at this time. They are all either coming off injuries, rookies or guys that were on other teams and frankly were JAGs for the other teams.

You are hoping that Spencer can get and stay healthy...something he has not done in some time.

Even when healthy I am not sure he gives you much pass rush. He can help against the run but he has not been a big sack guy for most of his career. He only had one season with double digit sacks and that was with All Pro Hall of Famer D.Ware on the other side of him.

I don't think it is very realistic for people to think that Spencer coming back is going to make a big difference.

I think it is more realistic to think the Rookie might make a difference when he comes back but that is just blind faith as we have et to see what he can do in a game with the Cowboys.

Is it bad that I expected worse, and didn't think those numbers were that bad for this defense?

We were so bad last year that even bad this year seems, and is, better than last year.

However whether it is better or does not seem as bad, it is a far cry from good enough.

Thing is we just don't have enough healthy and talented players right now on that Defensive line.

This is what happens when you don't put emphasis on drafting great defensive players. We switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3 and we expect great things to happen from the same group of people? Nope. Its not going to happen.

On a slightly related note. I can not find the stat on NFL.Com but I am curious how much Time of Possession we are averaging on Offense this year with the increased commitment to the running game vs last year.

I ask this because I want to see if that is helping to keep this defense off the field more.

Yesterday was another stark reminder that this defense is just not good.

Another heretofore nobody quarterback has a career passing day against this defense, and a mediocre offense has a field day, doing whatever they wanted.

The Rams completed a large percentage of their third downs and in all honesty, how many times did they punt?

We should have no illusions that this defense is even OK, and they sure won't be when they get lit up by Brees and the Saints on national television.

Who wouldnt have taken those numbers prior to the season?

Peyton went 80 yards in like 45 seconds on the vaunted seattle d. Give me some timely stops and timely to.s and im happy

Agreed.

It's been shocking how little was changed when making a wholesale scheme change.

Did they even have a sack yesterday? That third string QB had all day to throw.
