Some Defensive stats that are offensive

There is no question that this is the worst pass rushing front I've ever seen with this team. It is laughably bad.

I laughed a little at that great Carolina defensive line getting spanked up, down, and all around last night. They got a few sacks and some pressure but got their butts handed to them overall.

So far this season

Defense is giving up 360 yards per game for 11th most in the league

69 points given up for 13th in the league (and that is with a 3 way tie for 10th)

23 points per game average which is 13th worse in the league (and this is with a 3 way tie for 10th)

24 penalties on defense which is tied for 7th worst in the league

Total yards of penalties 227 which is 5th worst in the league

Of course it is probably an improvement from last year...but it is clear that it is not that good.

The offense (minus the turn overs) is good enough to win us games even if the defense is bad that day.

I don't think the defense is good enough to win us games if the offense is bad that day.

Last year we were going through Dlinemen all year. We still have not had our Dline completely healthy yet.
This year it seems like we are going through LBs.

Just makes one wonder how much better the D would look Without all these turnovers. No the D isn't great, it's missing pieces and is already getting hit with injuries, but it's not as bad as many thought it would be. The best defense is always going to be a greater offense. There's only one Ravens/Seahawks defense per decade...

This is what happens when you don't put emphasis on drafting great defensive players. We switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3 and we expect great things to happen from the same group of people? Nope. Its not going to happen.

the whining that happened on this site over being a 3-4 team was pitiful. We are a 4-3 team historically, etc was all I heard. We went back to 4-3 and we still are bad

Our defense has 24 penalties? Is that right? Pretty sure the whole team doesn't have 24 penalties.

We're 2-1. We look better. Doom and gloom is just what the doctor ordered.

this is exactly what a lot of logical people thought this defense would be compared to last year. its improvement, but not good if you looking at an absolutely good defense. going from 32nd and one of all time worst to a top 10 defense doesn't happen over night. it will take 2-3 years.

The defense is terrible, zero pass rush. It is just a matter of time before they show you just how bad.

I will be ecstatic if we managed those numbers for the entire season. So far the offenses we have played are mediocre to bad. We will play some prolific ones eventually (Saints, Colts, Eagles x2)

On a slightly related note. I can not find the stat on NFL.Com but I am curious how much Time of Possession we are averaging on Offense this year with the increased commitment to the running game vs last year.

I ask this because I want to see if that is helping to keep this defense off the field more.

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2014/

The offense ranked 26th in number of drives in 2013 and rank 23rd so far this year.

The offense ranked 32nd in number of plays in 2013 and rank 15th so far this year.

The offense ranked 15th in average time per drive in 2013 and rank 6th so far this year.

No harm in being a realist about the defense.

In order to really expect improvement we'll need to see the injured return (Lawrence, Spencer, Durant, Ro McClain) but Lee needs to come back (next season) and the team need a good defensive draft in 2015 and another free agent signing or two along the way.

Yes We shall.

But let me ask you a serious question.

Do you honestly think Spencer is going to provide much help with team to the point that it actually makes much difference?

Lawrence maybe...I just can't see it with Spencer.

We were relying on him coming back last year and he played about one game...or was it half a game.

if I may offer my 2 cents here, although you did not ask me, IF (big IF) we can get 8-9 sacks from Spencer and when Lawrence come back he can provide some type of pressure I think it will help us tremenduosly. I will also like to mention I am a big homer.
