What was the penalty on last play before the FG?

Why was that stupid?

They let the play clock run down to 1 and then they called the timeout. The same amount of time runs off the clock if they had not called a timeout and used a running play than if they call timeout and then go use a running play.

Better off letting the clock run down to 1 and call a timeout. This way you can tell your O-Line and receivers hey, don't move at all because we're not running a play here. I'm going to let the clock run to 1 and call a timeout. Because if you get a false start....that stops the clock.

Better off doing that and then setting up a designed play, go over with the team to not hold because you're trying to wind the clock down.

Why would the clock have stopped on the running play?

Keep it moving. Even if Murray fell forward, it wouldn't have mattered in terms of positioning. Keep the clock moving. I also think it's stupid when it's done prior to a punt late in games.

The clock would not have stopped on a running play. But, it makes zero difference in terms of how much time is ran off the clock if you do NOT take a timeout and run the ball with Murray versus if you take a timeout with 1 second left on the playclock and then run the ball with Murray.

By deciding to not run a play and let the playclock get down to 1 and then calling a timeout, you can eliminate the odds of getting a false start...re-group....get everybody on the same page as to the play you wish to run and when the snap count is going to be and remind the O-Line to not hold (which they did anyway) and to remind the RB to stay in bounds.

I don't think it would have made a difference in the end, but I don't think calling a timeout was a dumb idea either because they called it with 1 second left on the playclock.
