4th out of 8 historical head coaches at 4 seasons of work.

Sounds about right. 8-8 so far until this season.

I'm not a supporter or hater of Red at this point, but I would love to see winning percentage rankings out of the 8.

P.S: I do support Red's superior coaching staff however.

Here you go. Switzer's at the top, and Wade's higher than Jimmy Johnson. Parcells is lower than Chan Gailey.

  1. Barry Switzer: 63.3% win percentage as Cowboys head coach
  2. Tom Landry: 59.5% win percentage as Cowboys head coach
  3. Wade Phillips: 59.3% win percentage as Cowboys head coach
  4. Jimmy Johnson: 58.0% win percentage as Cowboys head coach
  5. Jason Garrett: 54.5% win percentage as Cowboys head coach
  6. Chan Gailey: 52.9% win percentage as Cowboys head coach
  7. Bill Parcells: 51.5% win percentage as Cowboys head coach
  8. Dave Campo: 31.3% win percentage as Cowboys head coach

For Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett comparison sake there we go.

They have a similar sample size of games coached.

Both also apparently inherited a so called "playoff capable team".

Jimmy took on a team that was 1-15. Won 2 SB's and set up Switzer for his and the NFC championship game prior.

We're not going to get into Landry as it's obvious.

Landry and Jimmy are our standards. Landry may be best 3 of all time.

Parcells is the enigma as he took on a loser and left something of hope.

The rest who cares.

But let's not build up Garrett right now. Let's not beat him up right now either since we're 7-3 on a bye.

Wade at this sample size was not much better or worse either.

PS: Thanks greatly for the factual info.

Well, that's not illustrative of much. Apparently, there's more to winning games than just being a good head coach. I'm gonna say that having good players is of some benefit here. Bill Parcells agrees with me. Barry thinks players are probably overrated.

I don't care about wins. I care about playoffs and Super Bowl appearances. The fact Garret is 4th in cowboys history in wins just shows you how meaningless and misleading that stat can be.

What is meaningless and misleading about it? He has surpassed other coaches who have 1 combined playoff win. Looks pretty straightforward to me.

It is meaningless b/c he hasn't even made the playoffs yet as a head coach. It is misleading b/c the purpose of posting such a stat is to give some sort of kudos to a coach who hasn't earned it yet. Comprende?

Funny thing is, Switzer is on top. Yet he is the one who inherited a back-to-back Super Bowl Championship team and quickly demolished them into a sub 500 team.

Switzer didn't have the authority to demolish much of anything. He was basically a baby sitter for the assistant coaches, and was hired to prove Jerry's point to Jimmy that "anyone" could win with this team. Jerry just didn't realize that not just "anyone" could build that team.

It's the old "you are what your record says you aren't" argument that comes up whenever you put a 'realist' in a room with an objective fact regarding Jason Garrett.

Congrats to Garrett. I'm just glad he has the respect of the players because he sure doesn't have it with the fan base.

These guys fight their tails off for him week in and out. The Oline is completely overhauled since he took over and its one of the league's best bar none.

I hope he's here next season.

I bet you could win 36 games in 4.5 years if they made you coach right now. Just keep an eye on the challenge flag and don't ice your kicker. lol

His record says he is a mediocre head coach...............so far.

No, he destroyed the mentality of the team. They became lax and felt a sense of entitlement. They became losers.

That team was still good for a while after they won the last of 3 super bowls. They just lacked Jimmy Johnson and his ability to identify talent on draft day and coach it up. Jerry wasn't finding talent on draft day and he couldn't go out an buy it due to the cap restrictions which began in 1996. Switzer did what Jerry hired him to do which was basically nothing.

Count me as unimpressed with Garrett so far. Success in the playoffs may win me over. Considering he cost us the playoffs three years running, I expect at least a win or two in the playoffs before I give him any credit.

well, there can be two views on that. given the talent we had (and didn't in certain areas) we probably over achieved going 8-8. keep in mind garrett has been able to rebuild this team in 4 years while keeping us competitive. we have replaced 47 players in his 4 years and built the 5th youngest team in the league and have been 8-8 and going in the last game of the season in it for playoffs. we came up short. but again many on this very board guessed we are a 5-11 or 6-10 team.

Whatever Garret "inherited" in 2010, he had a huge hand in. Garret didn't arrive in Dallas in 2010 and probably should have been fired along with Wade.

Here's another made up 'fact' that gets trotted out whenever the topic of Jason Garrett comes up if and when people don't want to acknowledge the obvious change in how drafting has been handled since 2011. Because, of course we hold OCs everywhere responsible for the drafting that goes on under the head coaches they work for.

I can't tell if you are agreeing with me or being sarcastic. Interesting debating style. lol

Anyway, it gets "trotted" out a lot b/c it happens to be true. Wade had absolutely nothing to do with the offensive side of the ball. Jerry ran the post-parcels cowboys like offensive and defensive fiefdoms.............actually not much has changed. The fact some people like to trot out the recent draft successes is a testament to how bad things were in years prior. But, wait, Garret had nothing to do with personnel prior to 2010 right? Now, he's a freaking genius............. or was that him with his head in hands during the 2013 draft management debacle? Maybe another guy with orange hair in the war room? Maybe?
