Hey guys.

After giving this a serious thought, me and my wife decided to spend our next Christmas week in Texas. Our plan is to visit Houston-Dallas and maybe San Antonio with our kids who are under 10.

There is direct flight between Newark and Houston so we will probably land to Houston and rent the car. For hotel reservations, we will wait until May because I want to see Cowboys' schedule. I am hoping to take my Cowboys fan son to his first game in Dallas.

Besides obvious activities in Houston and Dallas, what are other things you suggest?

I'm not the expert, I just wanted to ask, how did you son become a cowboys fan?

Tom Landrys favorite brisket tacos at Mia's. Also the place Jerry was spotted at with Jimmy before Landry was replaced in Dallas.

Go visit Uncertain Texas/Lake Caddo in the eastern part of the state. Its beauty is second to none.

Well, if you are from the Newark area, one thing you will notice about Texas is there are a lot less toll roads. I was in New York / New Jersey a few years ago and I have never seen so many toll roads in my life.

Head to Austin and get some Franklin BBQ.

Thanks guys.

Flying to Houston on 25th of December and returning on December 30th. Let's hope Cowboys are playing at home on December 27th. If it is a Cowboys-Giants game, it will be awesome.

If you head to San Antonio and are in the mood for Pizza AVOID Incredible Pizza they should rename it Incredibly Bad Pizza. It's like a Chuck e Cheese type place. I was visiting a friend who just moved to San Antonio and we were in the mood for pizza and happened to stop there...MISTAKE!

Thanks guys. I added San Antonio to the short list as well. It will be a challenge to hit Houston-Dallas-San Antonio in just 5 days but thinking about spending 2 nights in Houston 2 nights in San Antonio and 1 night in Dallas.

Sat mornings on PBS... The Daytripper

If you go to San Antonio, you have to eat at Dick's Last Resort on the Riverwalk. I am not sure if you have ever heard of it but it is a place where the waiters are intentionally rude. It is extremely funny and sometimes crude although I am not sure how they would be with young children.

The christmas lights along the riverwalk in San Antonio are great to see. If you're looking for great tex-mex, try Rosario's near downtown. Take the trollys in SA. My adopted hometown! Go pay your respects at The Alamo, and take in the missions if you have time. Take in some of the Hill Country towns around there if you have time.....Helotes, Fredericksburg, Boerne, Kerrville, etc.
Franklin's is great BB in Austin, but you may spend a few hours waiting to get in. I would go to Lockhart from SA, and try any of the BBQ places there.....Smitty's, Black's, Kreutz's.
Houston??? I was born there, but not raised there (SA). Don't know what you would be interested in seeing there....refineries?

I agree - Franklin's, while good, isn't worth the 2+ hour wait in line for bbq, when there is better bbq available - if you're coming from San Antonio and heading north to Dallas, you can hit the Gonzales Food Market, Luling City Market, or any of the joints in Lockhart (Kreuz is my favorite).

I can't imagine spending 2 days in Houston as a tourist. About the only thing I can think of to see would maybe be NASA. Otherwise, it seems to me to just be a big urban sprawl with little unique flavor/character.
