Again, I can not overstate how great this deal is.

If he ends up on some 10 game suspension this will cost us like 4-5 million total and we'd have him back for the playoffs.

This deal allows us to shoot for the SB without mortgaging any real future money.

It would have taken a lot of guaranteed money to get this deal done long term.
And if you are Dallas it is real smart business to take these type deals one year at a time where possible.
Like with Melton last year had we given him what it took to sign him long term we'd have had to overpay and then be stuck with a rich non-starter.
If Dallas can't resign Hardy becaus ehe is simply too expensive we likely get 3rd round pick comp in 2017.

We go thru this year and Hardy is solid... say 10 sacks in 10 games but the unthinkable happens and Romo is finished due to injury... Dallas has kept all it's flexibility and could move on to a quick rebuild.

Exactly. I like the deal. Low risk, high reward. Sure it is one year, but I'll take that one year compared to nothing.

that team can be us,Jerry wont let a young pass rusher get away if he is still great.

Jerry just let the leagues leading rusher and offensive MVP get away. All it takes is one team to throw the bank at Hardy and he is gone.

Coincidence?

I thought that spot was reserved for McFadden to stick it to Murray.

I could see us going DE in this draft but not first round. Maybe an uber athletic/project guy in the 3rd or 4th round and let Marinelli try to mold him.

This deal is almost a mirror image of Melton's so I think Dallas was the driving force on the contract.
With other teams bailing out Dallas had leverage.
Plus it seems really only Tampa was gonna make a legit offer and Hardy coming in here for a couple days spoke to what team he wanted to join.

Dallas let him get out of the building but not out of town.

We had an option to extend Melton at a higher rate, but one that (one presumes) we felt was better than he'd have gotten on the open market once he'd proven himself. Without that option, I have a hard time comparing the two deals.

Smarter men than I made this seal so I hope it works where Dallas gets the first shot at him next year.

this is whats reassuring me too. i think we know what we're doing. i think if he tears it up and is a good fit in our system we wouldnt let that walk away easy. plus you gotta think hes going to establish a life and a home here and not also have pay a lot of taxes. thats hard to just get up and move after a year.

Wouldn't the incentives for games played go under likely to achieve incentives? If so I don't think they would take the suspension into account as far as cap hit and those incentives would apply for this years cap. On the upside those suspension games would take away from the likely to earn incentives and add that loss to next seasons cap. If all of the above is true that is.

And?

If we can't get Hardy to a deal the FO feels comfortable giving, then let him go. No need to overpay, have regrets and be hampered by a deal that has backfired.

Hilarious that people think going year-to-year is a loss for our GM. Every NFL team would be happy to do so rather than throw out 30 million guaranteed.

Exactly, this is actually an amazing contract.

Do we think he's honestly going to command more than $12-14 million next year anyway? (which is what his salary likely would have been if it was a multi-year deal)

a waste, considering a suspension is coming. A 2 year deal would have been better.

From overthecap.com:

The current cap number is $2,639,725 which represents the $750,000 base salary, the $1,311,600 in workout bonuses and 1/16 of the roster bonus which is $578,125. From the comment above apparently only 1/16 counts against the cap to begin with since he only appeared in 1 game last year. As he earns the additional roster bonuses they will be added to the cap.

With that said, my question would be do we need to head into the season with $8,671,875 of additional cap space to cover the potential additional roster bonuses?

Any leftover can be pushed into next season's cap. The Cowboys still have some targets out there.

Don't get it confused. People that say Hardy wasn't looking for a long term deal are wrong. Of course he wants one. He just didn't think any team would go there right now to the numbers he wants. So this is why they were focused on just one year. Had the Cowboys given him a competitive multi-year offer with a lot of guaranteed money he'd have signed it quickly.

They chose to be conservative. I think it was a mistake. We shall see.

Yeah, I think it's more likely that it was a mistake on management's part. They appear to be overly concerned, in my view, with saving cap space for the post-Romo era. I can't see how cap space is going to help us when we no longer have a franchise QB.

He is a rental. He most likely will not be here in 2016. I think this all but assures we select the best pass rusher on the board with our first pick, get him into a rotation in 2015, and hope he's ready to take over in 2016.

You can characterize it however you like but its also fair to say that we have to be the favorites to retain him considering he just took what appears to be less money to play here. He sure looks happy doing it too.

This means we can wait until next year to spend a first on a pass rusher too. We aren't desperate anymore at least for the time being.
