Running back candidates

With that logic they can't work out WRs or OL because they feel good about those positions. This is nothing out of the ordinary.

Nobody is claiming that they have a huge need at either WR or OL. They didn't lose their best player at either WR or OL. Any attempted comparison is invalid.

I'm not advocating Tate, but he actually did look good in his two games before Alex Mack got hurt (averaged 6.8 and 5.6 YPC). That interior of the line was hot garbage for the rest of October and November, plus they had two rookies that they wanted to get in the mix. Tate got frustrated, popped off a little and out he went.

But he also went in and out of both Minnesota and Pittsburgh too...

Just say you were wrong when you said it wasn't even close. Wasn't even close? All the stats look very close with some favoring Brady and some favoring Romo. Brady won another Super Bowl with no real running backs and no real receivers surrounding him. Give the man the credit he deserves.

The average yards per attempt are not close. The completion percentage was not close. Romo out played Brady through out the year.

Brady won the super bowl because two men made poor choices. Flacco and Pete Carroll.

I am GROOT!

Tate's 2014 season was draped in red flags as he was outplayed by Isaiah Crowell/Terrance West in Cleveland, complained about his role and was released. He then bounced to Minnesota and Pittsburgh, continuing to show zero burst. So it's highly unlikely he'd provide Dallas an upgrade on their current underwhelming stable of Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden, Ryan Williams and Lance Dunbar. Still, the Cowboys' desire to at least kick the tires on Tate suggests they're not done tinkering at the running back position.

I like the bold...

Tinkering is not what is needed. Solutions are if they are wrong about Randle and McFadden. Trouble is they will probably find out too late.

Heck I like the fact Tate is coming in to work out with the Cowboys. From watching him when he was in Houston the guy showed the ability as an all around RB.

His last production came when he was in Houston, which is about like saying you are glad about McFadden by watching his time at Arkansas.

I was on board with mcFadden and Randle being the guys. I bought into what the front office was selling.

But the fact we keep getting linked to wash ups like Tate and others is making me waver in my beliefs. If the front office is so sold on our running situation, why are they investigating more bums?
Tate is the only back dallas has been linked to. Everyone else is just fan speculation. They are just doing their due diligence. Doubt he gets signed. If somebody gets hurt midseason, then maybe they call tate. Nothing wrong with taking a look.

That he did. I doubt anything comes of his coming in at all, but I can understand why they are bringing him in. He seemed to run good behind really good offensive lines (Texans and Browns before Mack went down), but became pedestrian with a flawed line where he had to make people miss behind the line of scrimmage. Well, it just so happens that Dallas feels they have an awesome O-line, so they probably wanted to see if he was a willing participant in the upcoming running back derby.

yea, cause he intercepted that ball. :)

He played in Houston in 2013 and is 26, McFadden was at Ark in 2007. I don't see a comparison. Tate coming in does not mean RB is now solved it does mean you have a legit NFL vet who does not have a lot of wear on him.

Let's Chill. If nothing else, this demonstrates we're not satisfied with sitting still and are looking to improve upon what we already have in house. I doubt we'd sign Tate to any contract we can't easily get out of. If he doesn't work out, I expect the FO is unlikely to make cutting him a damaging situation. At least, that's definitely been their MO lately. If anything, I'm encouraged that we're seeking to improve our RB corps.

Four backs in camp is going to make it fairly tough to evaluate though when you know you do not have a true first string yet.

Again, I will be surprised if they add him and then say he is competing for the lead role. There are only so many reps to go around and we still do not even know if McFadden can function behind the scheme. Kicking the tires and saving for future reference I understand. That is what I would expect out of this.

What about Romo having a quarterback rating 16 point higher than Brady (Romo led the league) and having a 9 point higher QBR (Romo led the league)?

What about Romo having the 2nd ranked running game and Brady having the 18th ranked running game?
QB rating difference comes down to completion percentage which can be attributed to running game success.

In any case this is a running back thread and I am not knocking my favorite player in the league (Romo). I am simply stating that it is wrong to say Romo was so much better than Brady last year and that it wasn't close. Brady has been very successful for a very long time when he is the only real star on his offense most seasons. He doesn't have Dez, Witten, Demarco to help him. He has a group of no name running backs year after year and a group of small slot receivers like Wes Welker or whichever Wes Welker clone they find to play with him.

You know, there's something really satisfying about watching a string of successful runs like that.

I don't have strong feelings about Tate. We ought to be looking at all options, and if he's got a connection to Pollack, it's not surprising we'd give him the courtesy of a look, anyway. From the clips, he looks like he's got good vision. He's got a weird running style that looks like he's imbalancing himself when he cuts, but he's able to just sort of bend around obstacles without bending his knees. Is his injury history mostly knee and hamstring related?

I'm not opposed to kicking the tires on any running backs available. In fact, I'd like to see them bring in Chris Johnson for a workout too. I just don't want anyone trying to sell me that "all is well" while they're doing it.

The point was the last time he looked good was three years ago and he went down quick. McFadden was a never was and to find his best production, you have to go back to college to find it.

The point is he is here working out that is all, he has some good abilities it is up to him to show it. Hell at least he has done something in recent times unlike the rest who have done nothing for their entire careers.
