Ron Leary Not Afraid Of Competition Entering Third Year At Left Guard

Well done. I was hoping someone would respond to that. You gotta believe there's a few in here (Frozen 700) that watched "Friday". The sequels sucked, but the original, as usual, was funny. I could quote that movie. Kudos for at least looking it up.

I watched an old Ice Cube movie the other day. He moved to the suburbs with his uncle who had won 1M in the lottery but had spent all of it.

I would be a big surprise if he was not more comfortable on the Left because he played LG and LT in college but didn't play on the Right.

And that's why I personally don't see him playing right tackle this year. From a sheer talent standpoint, it would be great if the Cowboys could replace Free with a younger, more physically gifted player.

But, unfortunately it's not that simple, or easy.

It's not really about Free. If Collins is better than Green and Weems, then there is a good chance that he is the backup OT.

I don't see it.

It wouldn't surprise me if we've already seen the last of Collins at right tackle for this year.

Green is likely ahead of Collins at RT. If Green is a better backup OT, then it's possible to Collins only practices at Guard. The decision will be heavily based on the ability of Green or Weems to be the backup OT. That means being able to play LT and RT. While Green is likely ahead at RT, Collins is likely ahead at LT.

Agreed.

While Green is likely ahead at RT, Collins is likely ahead at LT.

Given the amount of practice time Green has been missing, I'm not sure where he's at right now. Reports have indicated the team has had several offensive tackles watching or working on the side and it appears that Weems has been getting the lion's share of work.

Next Friday. It was alright. When Smokey was no longer a character in the sequels, it was never the same.

Leary's going to win it, and Collins will get the year to acclimate and take it over next season. He'll be the primary injury replacement at 2-3 positions for us in the meantime.
This is one of those things where you let the vet get his payday because it's so obviously in the best interest of locker room harmony and the way things run. Unless Collins just completely blows his doors off, which he's unlikely to be able to do.

Now, if RL were to go down for an injury or something, all bets may be off, but all things being equal, I don't think you gain enough on the field to upgrade that spot with a rookie to justify possibly disturbing the wah of your OL veterans.

Collins will start somewhere.. IMO it has to be right tackle because I just don't see Leary getting beat out.

What complicates this is Doug Free's money vs Leary's which is why I believe LG is still in play.

They will save money in the long run if Collins replaces Free. Free's contract averages 5M per. It will only cost 2.2M to tender Leary next year. If cut after this season, Free's contract would just be a 1 year, 6M deal.

I don't think Collins has to start game 1. The top goal should be to find the best possible backup OT. The best of Collins. Green and Weems should be the backup OT and possible challenger to Free as the starter.

But don't forget you would also be looking at $3 million in dead money too, while saving $1 million.

I think that if Weems isn't that, he's not making this team. He's had enough time to show something. As we sit here today, Collins doesn't appear to be that candidate and it looks like the team has quickly realized that.

Free's average is 5M per. If they cut him after this season, he gets 6M total. They only took a 3M cap hit this season; therefore, there would be 2M that has to be accounted for in future years with or without him on the team.

If Collins does not play OT, it will be be because another player was better there.

You seem convinced that Weems or Green are better than Collins.

He got a $4.5 million signing bonus over 3 years. If we cut him after just one, do we not then have $3 million in dead money?

It's more that I think Collins isn't ready to play RT than anything about those two really. But Broaddus did have some good words for Weems recently so that's a bit encouraging. Given the injuries to other players he's certainly got his chance.

Dead money itself is irrelevant when comparing the cap if a player stays or is cut.

2M hits the cap without or without him on the roster; therefore, you take that 2M out of the equation.

x + a = y + z + a

The a is irrelevant.

x = y + z

It costs 5M per to keep him 3 years or 6M to keep him 1 year.

One of those 2 has to look good at OT to keep Collins at Guard. It's not complicated. If those 2 suck, then Collins will be the backup OT.

So, $3 million in signing bonus left then?

Keep telling yourself that. Collins has to look good at RT first. It's not that complicated.
