I get that, but 7 years is a better deal than 5 for DAL. More cap and salary flexibility.

not really, signing bonuses can only be spread 5 years, so adding two phantom years to the end of the deal, would have 0 impact this year. Now had we added more years, it would give us more flexibility in future season if we needed him to restructure, however, that usually means we would have had to give him bigger guarantees to compensate for him being under contract for 2 more seasons.

These deadlines always amuse me. This is not like procrastinating for your mid term assignment in undergrad. Why the last hour? So what was going on the last two months? How many numbers can be crunched? What happened in the last hour besides the obvious deadline that made both parties feel great? Lol

The human psyche...

Had Dez's camp asked for this deal months ago, Dallas would have fought for a better deal. Had Dallas offered this deal months ago, Dez's camp would have fought for a better deal. Without other teams being able to bid, there was no urgency, like in free agency.

Under current terms, Dez will be 31 at the end of the 5 years. A good point for him.

What we don't know at present, if the terms allow any time that can be picked up by the team...at the end.

I'm happy he finally signed, but I'm still unimpressed with his Twitter posts and trying to force Jerry's hand. He could have been more professional and trusted the Man/team that's had his back since he came into the league. Jerry never said anything bad and always said he wanted Dez in Dallas. Sometimes you should just shut up and let your agent handle things. He still has a lot to learn from players like Ware, Witten, Lee, Romo, etc.. Throwing temper tantrums and making threats is exactly why folks still don't trust that he'll keep his nose clean. I sure hope this thing doesn't go south now that Dez had his money.

With the 22m in guarantees that kick in 2016 there is room for a voidable year or two.

I expect base salaries of 10m in 2016 and 12m in 2017 will make up the additional 22m.

I would rather see an option bonus of 15m spread over 5 more years with lower base salaries of 3m and 4m making up the 22m

I am glad that the cowboys signed Bryant now there will be no distractions heading into training camp. the drama of not having Bryant at training camp would have been unreal on this board and the team.

This really sets us up for a great year.

The Media would have been unbearable with a Dez holdout.

This keeps the offense on track, which is important with Hardy, McClain, Lee and the CBs having issues/questions

Dez had to play to his strengths at the time. That's just a part of business in the NFL.

He could have been planning to push the point through game 10 of the regular season. Then agreed to the terms of the offer. Giving him 6 games in contract for his retirement privileges, but also guaranteeing full payment if given a similar designation next season.

The team defineably needed Dez Bryant to be fully competitive this season. No difference here, than when Emmitt pushed the point through two defeats in the Super Bowl season. That, and Troy Aikman signed his new contract all the way into the month of December that season. Those rights are fought for, before being received.

Jerry Jones: No special protections in Dez Bryant deal

At early points in the path that the Cowboys and wide receiver Dez Bryant took to Wednesday’s agreement on a five-year, $70 million contract, there were reports that concerns about Bryant’s off-field activities were an obstacle to getting a deal done.

During a conference call to discuss the agreement, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gave no indication that was the case and said there was no language specific to Bryant written into the contract to protect the team from the fallout of any off-field trouble. The Cowboys already have stringent language in their player contracts that void guarantees if a player is suspended, arrested or even detained by the police and it has appeared in many recent contracts.

Jones said that the team took Bryant’s vow to miss training camp and the regular season seriously and that the deal came together after he and his son/Cowboys executive vice president Stephen flew to New York on Tuesday to meet with Bryant’s representatives. The two sides worked until the Cowboys proposed a deal with more guaranteed and total money at 3 a.m. that needed only finishing touches on Wednesday.

Those finishing touches kept Bryant, who Jones called the NFL’s best receiver, in the fold for the near future. They also left the Cowboys with what Bryant calls a “Super Bowl ready” team for the 2015 season, although there’s plenty to play out before we know if that’s anything more than wishful thinking.

It's pretty apparent that the Cowboys blinked on this one.

Dez will be 32 and 33 years old at the end of a 7-year deal. There has not been many WR's productive at that age. NOT MANY AT ALL! And even when the few that are productive, will that production match that contract that they signed in their prime. I don't think so. So did they really blink or is this what they wanted. We will never know. But for me, I love a 5-yearr deal.

You're missing the point. Demarius signed a 5 year deal with roughly the same guaranteed money, had we wanted Dez for 7 years, we would have had to likely exceed 50 million in guarantees to do so. That's the only way to incentivize giving Dallas control for 2 more years.

Signing Dez to the exact same deal, plus 2 years at the end at albeit, ridiculous salaries, was never an option.

What is your initial reaction?

It’s a deal that had to get done. I think both sides can claim great success and a win for various reasons. But overall, this is another step to insuring a successful offseason and maybe the most vital. To have Dez, who I feel like is their best player, under contract for the duration of his prime can only be celebrated as a very positive step.

Do you think Dez should be the second-highest paid receiver in the NFL?

Yes, I do — I kind of thought they could have gone higher. For Dez to get the guaranteed money he got, which appears to be $45 million, that’s an incredible number that puts him right below Megatron (Calvin Johnson of the Lions) and rightfully so, because that’s where I think he is in this league. The one thing that surprised me was the total number was lower than I thought. That from the Cowboys’ standpoint could be considered great news. It also means his deal is only five years, meaning he could get one more contract at age 31 on the backside. I expected they might get six or seven years to control him into his age 33 season, but evidently they opted for a little less annually in exchange for getting this deal.

How important is Dez to this offense?

Dez is one of those receivers who defies X’s and Os. It doesn’t matter if he’s covered, he can still make plays and there are only a handful of guys who can do that. With his age, 26, and (the fact) you just lost DeMarco Murray, you are admitting you are building your offense around the advantages Dez Bryant gives you. That means you always will have a numbers advantage in the run game because Dez demands a double-team up top. Without DeMarco, the idea of risking Dez’s presence would have been a fatal error on the Cowboys. If you’re going to let DeMarco walk, you had to come to a long-term agreement with Dez Bryant.

I think we can make the case they planned on that all along, and both parties tried to get the best deal up until the deadline. In the end, I am not positive either party was willing to go past this deadline if you gave them truth serum. Dez was never going to leave the Cowboys and the Cowboys were never going to fully turn their back on Dez.

Dez Bryant is making $16M in 2015 while Demaryius Thomas is making $15M. Both have $7M of bonus money deferred until 3/15/16.

Demaryius Thomas has $35M fully GTD at signing while Dez Bryant has $32M fully GTD at signing.

Dez Bryant's guarantees have offsets. Demaryius Thomas doesn't have offsets.

Dez Bryant has $45M fully GTD by mid-March 2016. Demaryius Thomas is still at $35M fully GTD next March.

Different structures for Dez & Demaryius. Demaryius has a $13.2M 2015 cap number. Dez's 2015 cap number is $7M.
