Tony Stewart still struggling a year after Ward Jr.'s fatal wreck

As he ran out of gas on the final lap Sunday at Pocono Raceway, Tony Stewart wearily asked his team where he finished.

Ninth, he was told.

''Hell, I'll take that,'' he replied.

It was a curiously calm reaction considering only minutes before Stewart had been poised for a top-five finish. Maybe even top three. Stewart didn't complain about the lost opportunity. He takes what he get on the race track these days, which are often bleak and embarrassing for the three-time NASCAR champion.

But that's the way the last two years have gone for Stewart, who is to race Sunday at Watkins Glen International Raceway for the first time since 2012. He missed the 2013 race with a broken leg, then skipped the race last season following the accident in which his sprint car struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr. the night before the race.

Sunday, the day Stewart is scheduled to run NASCAR's road course race, is the anniversary of Ward's death.

Nothing has been the same for Stewart since the 20-year-old was killed when he climbed from his wrecked race car and walked down the track at Canandaigua Motorsports Park to confront the NASCAR star. Ward was struck and killed by Stewart, who called it ''100 percent an accident.'' A grand jury declined to indict Stewart.

I still can't believe the sheer idiocy of Ward. He not only ended his own life being a hothead, but he completely changed not only his family's lives for the worse, but did the same for Tony Stewart.

And now, it appears the Ward family is suing Tony Stewart.

Very true.

But.... Tony should have gotten out of the car and whooped his butt. He is struggling because he made a bad decision after Ward made a bad decision.

He'll never be the same. It's all unfortunate and sad.

Bull. How was he going to get out of the car and whoop his butt? Was he supposed to stop his car magically and instantly in the middle of the track when he saw the jackass running towards his moving car? Even the guy in front of Stewart said he almost hit Ward because HE couldn't see him either, but Ward wasn't charging his car so that made it easier for the guy to avoid him. That accident was 100% on Ward, Stewart had no fault in it at all.

It's been a while since I saw the video.

I think you could be right. What was with the goosing of the gas and the car kicking out? That is what the big deal was about.

He was wring for getting out of car. 100%
Seems like tony goosed gas though.

I'm not sure. You tell me?

IIRC those sprint cars do not handle like normal cars.
I'll look it up later, but I want to say that the "kicking out" wasn't to hit Ward but to turn left.

Understood.

But even I know... If you goose the gas the car will kick right.

I think he is struggling with that... He goosed gas.

Unfortunate. Stay in the car. Damn.

He turned right and goosed the gas, should have kicked out left. But Ward was already on top of him, and it appeared he might have actually been clipped by the right front tire.

It was simply an insane act by Ward, I'm not sure how he thought confronting a car moving at over 40 mph was in his best interest.

Toxicology report found that Ward had a ton of Hippy Lettuce in his system at the time of death. The kid wasn't all there.

Yeah. Add that to the fact that the track wasn't well lit at all and you can very easily see how it wasn't going to end well for him.
