After slow start, DE Russell starting to make strides.

This guy would get a ton of preseason snaps for me because I'm not sure we can hide him on the PS. We need to know if he has "it" before final cuts.

We need these young dline guys to step up. I dont even want to see Lawrence or Gregory, etc out there. Just the young guys on the fringe.

Cutting the dline down is going to be really tough
We are going to cut a player or two that have potential to play in this league
Not sure the staff has any clue at this point who will get those last couple of spots and may not till the last minute
But I suspect there will be a guy, maybe two cut that end up being decent players in this league
I think we go short at Safety with 2 CBs ( White, Jones) capable of play Safety
i think we carry 3 true safeties with Wilcox, church and Heath
With cb's who can play safety that gives you options

Not sure what's going to happen with RR. As a 4th (?) round pick, it'll be way too hard to stash him on practice squad, but it'll be very hard for him to make the 53 since they'll most likely keep only 8 or 9 lineman, and 7 or 8 of those are already probably taken up (Lawrence, Gregory, Mincey, Hardy*, Hayden, 2 Crawford's) then a battle between Bishop, RR, and the rest for the remaining 1 or 2 spots. Problem is he's not as good of a DE or DT as some of the other guys are at their position.

Makes having 3 qbs a luxury we can't afford. Especially if we need bodies for LB and WR/TE

5th

Both of these guys aren't making the team - if they were to go short at positions like safety, wide receiver or linebacker, they would be losing a guy who can contribute on special teams for a player who won't make that type of contribution.

While Gardner has a great motor, leadership skills and brings the kind of intensity and effort that can be infectious on a team, he is a limited player both physically and positionally. His arm length, or lack thereof, will always be a problem for him out wide, and he's too small to play inside. Russell physically has much more potential, and is demonstrating the ability to play multiple positions. I don't think that either would be primed to make much of a contribution this season due to the players in front of them, but I think that Russell's physical/positional gifts will win the day.

Gardner will be a cut, and will catch on somewhere else. I could see the Bears wanting to take a look at him, as Vic Fangio was his defensive coordinator at Stanford.

Russell is making this team with his recent performances... on top of being a relative high(er) draft pick...

I think T.McClain and Ben Gardner are the ones looking in from the outside and PS guys

Special Teams ability does not matter for players that will be inactive. Only 8 DL will be active on game day. Any additional DL will be backups/developmental players.

And why would someone trade for players they know we have to cut otherwise?

To avoid the risk of another team picking them up off waivers. You do have a point though, as players who are cut often make it through waivers with no problem.

That said, I suspect teams will be paying close attention to dlinemen that the Cowboys cut...

And what's with the attitude? Someone piss in your cheerios? Get a grip.

For one teams don't know who will get cut. But not only that teams trade so they know they get the guy they want.

No not pissed but people use your head. Don't ask me how you going to trade a guy that is cut. Stupid question

Fringe players are never traded for and won't be from this team.

There are dozens of guys cut every year who have some potential but just not there yet. That makes trading these types of players hard

Every year before and even after cuts teams trade for players that would have gotten cut. We have carried players to the 53 ( Dante Rosario) with the intention of dealing them

Especially considering it happens ALL THE TIME

The demand for fringe rotation players with potential, but flaws, is not that great.

Who are they going to be paying attention too? Who would be swooped up if cut? DT is our weakest position now. If someone can't beat out Nick Hayden, they aren't on anyone's must have list.

They were potential stars!!

Uh. Good point. :)

We do it practically every year. Trade or trade for right before ir after cuts. Those two and Lavar Edwards, Ryan Cook and I think a Safety thw past few years. And we traded Dante Rosario, Crayton, and Lissemore

Im probably forgetting a few too. Dallas making some sort of deal during cut down time has become one of the safest bets in the NFL since Garrett too over

Yep. I was being sarcastic in the last post.

You're correct and I was wrong :(
