When It Comes To TV - The Cowboys Are Everywhere

This is a fascinating article from Five Thirty Eight (t's an ESPN Metrics Blog) with several great visuals on how big the Cowboys are nationwide in television markets and perfectly exemplifies why all those America's Teams polls are a laughing stock whether you like them or not.

Sometimes as Cowboy fans we can forget how really big the team is nationwide because we're so locked in.

The Cowboys truly are everywhere. As a friend of mine who is a die hard Buffalo Bills fan once said to me - "Dude, I know your offensive line just as good as mine and I can't name more than 3 other offensive lineman in the league."

I grew up in Central NY. Before the Sunday Ticket they would shot 2 games on CBS and 2 games on NBC every Sunday.

For the longest time, they rarely showed Buffalo Bills games on NBC. They would usually go with a better team. But, they would always show the Giants.

The CNY area has a large Cowboys fanbase and I believe a lot of it was from the fact that back in the day, prior to the 90's dynasty, we would get to see about 10 Cowboys games each year. Usually they had the afternoon game on CBS after the Giants played in the early game.

Try as they must, the fact is that the Cowboys are America's team and have been that way for since the term was coined by NFL Films. They are highly televised because they equal ratings and they have been able to sustain those ratings for over 40 years.

I never forget. Everywhere I go I get verbally attacked for wearing my Cowboys gear.

Cowboys can go mediocre or lose and still be relevant. Other teams can't (i.e. broncos, pats etc.)

It's a self-perpetuating phenomenon. If a team is on TV all the time, people get familiar with the players and stuff and become fans. The more popular a team becomes, the more likely it is to be on TV.

I live in central Virginia, but I've been a Cowboys fan since birth because my dad was stationed at Fort Sill in the late 60's, and the only team on TV on Sunday was Dallas. I'm surrounded by Commander flunkies, as you'd probably imagine, but I bet the second most popular team here is the 'Boys.

There's a story Hostile tells (I think it was him) about the large contingent of Dallas fans living in DC and how that happened. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Talking as a father here. I am a Giants fan and if I couldn't prevent my own son becoming a Cowboys fan, I must admit defeat and declare the Cowboys' supremacy in America.

Not surprising at all.......Tex Schramm did a super job of marketing of the team nationwide and one good thing Jerry knows how to do is marketing as well. Turning a $189m dollar investment into over $4bil---in 16 years time. Heck, the DC Cheerleaders are the only group like them with a national tv series and for the last 10 years, that's how popular and marketable they are.

Not a bad cash cow for good ole Jerry. BTW, whether the Cowboys are on TV or not, you gotta believe that they are on the thoughts and minds of many in the NE.

Still think it would be the Cowboys. Though the Ravens have grown in popularity as a market throughout Maryland the last few years. Before 2010, Commander fans will tell you and there was a thread on ES about it. They just don't care about the Ravens.

Cool post, interesting study... Nice to see the Commanders and Eagles getting almost zero secondary coverage (so to speak)... It is crazy how certain areas have been given to certain teams, especially the tiny little pockets... Like how did they decide that the Eagles would get that tiny little area along the Red River, but large areas to both the north and south get the NYG games more often? Interesting...
