1. They really really don't trust C-Mike for some reason. Either they don't want him to pass block or he just does not know/understand the playbook. They used the Rookie Rod Smith that has 2 career snaps and none with the Cowboys prior to this game as the RB when McFadden was out and they were passing.
C-Mike obviously has some physical ability to run the ball and at 220 pounds should be physically able to pass block; however, he must be the dumbest guy ever if the Rookie Rod Smith is getting the more mentally difficult snaps. I mean how dumb is this C-Mike guy?
2. The Cowboys are losing games with backup QBs. Take it like a man! (Apologies to WG, Amy, Boysmamacita, etc.). It is hard to win in the NFL. It is really hard to win with a backup QB. There are 32 teams and several of them don't have a quality starter. The fact that the Cowboys and many other teams don't have a quality backup should not be a surprise and is not necessarily anyone's fault. It's supply and demand with only so many total QBs that can function in and NFL game. I don't see any proof that the Cowboys coaches are terrible. The team has had chances to win in all but 1 game and even then they worked over Brady fairly well in the 1st half of that game. If the team can keep it close and have a chance to win with at backup QB then the coaches can't be all bad. Imagine if you were a Seahawks fan and were playing the Cowboys who were starting a scrub QB like Weed or Cassel. You would expect to win the game regardless of who was the Cowboys Head Coach or on their coaching staff.
3. Jeff Heath made some plays. He looked really good on pass coverage deep down the right sideline. He came up with a big stop and 3rd down. There was a question on the TD on who should have been in coverage, him or Church. Broaddus says he will get the answer but it looked like Church blew the coverage to me. With White out, I think the snaps Heath played were in the Dime defense. It would be interesting if he played in more than the dime because that would indicate he replaced Wilcox or Church on some snaps.
4. The issues with the Refs is getting old. The incompetence is tiring. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I do think some individual Refs have certain biases. Maybe a bias for or against a team. Maybe a bias for the home team. Maybe a bias to be overly critical of certain types of plays in an attempt to get noticed by their bosses. Whatever the issue, it is really getting old. I really wish there was some way to petition the NFL for drastic changes. Maybe full time refs would help or maybe better disciplinary actions for bad calls. It's not just against the Cowboys. I see it in other games where they at times appear biased and at other times just incompetent.
The timeout with 12 men on the field is inexcusable. The spot on the 3rd down that forced the Cowboys to go for it on 4th down was waaay off. Last week the penalty on Street for blocking too early was bad.
When the chump Pereira's opinion is on the Cowboys side, the Refs must really be doing some wrong. He's called out the Refs in Cowboys games 2 weeks in a row now. I would bet that he agrees with the Refs calls about 95% of the time. When he does not it's a really bad sign for their incompetence.
5. The Cowboys defense was definitely good enough to win so I don't want to complain much about them; however, they still seem to have no consistent answer for the legal pick play. The Seahawks got at least 2 critical 3rd down conversions on legal pick plays. It is super easy for their QB to see pre-snap where the receiver will be open due to a pick play.
6. On snaps where there was a slot CB, it appeared that Jones played that role for most of the game. I assume that White's knee kept him out of most of the game. Jones was good but it might have added to the pick play woes because they had been tricking things up a little with White in and attempt to combat the pick plays. The biggest issue is that they don't want Claiborne to get confused so they avoid having him do certain things that would help against the pick plays. Last week they tried having White and the LBs play Zone while Claiborne still played man in an effort to combat the pick plays but they probably were not ready to do that with Jones or they might have given up the idea altogether. Without Claiborne being able to make dynamic adjustments mentally, they may never solve the problem.
7. Hardy has the "it" factor, IMO. He seems to come up with big plays at critical times. His big plays are not what some people said were empty stats when Ware was here. I did hope for more pressure and sacks but with Wilson as the QB that gets tricky. I know he has been sacked a lot this season but there's a risk of him gaining significant yards running if you try too hard to sack him and abandon contain.
8. The running game appeared to be limited because McFadden was overworked. He went in for an IV at one point but was not gone long and was rarely off the field. When they signed him I thought he would be a good complimentary RB but I never wanted to see him with a big workload. Randle needs to get his act together. He was injured this week but has "personal" issues also going on. C-Mike's only hope may be a futurist Lawnmower Man type of system for him to be able to learn whatever it is that they don't think he has learned (The Lawnmower Man was about a dumb guy that was able to become a genius with a virtual reality system). Maybe Rod Smith will step up. They obviously already trust him more than C-Mike.
9. After last week the smart move was to coach Cassel to be conservative. With a backup QB and other limitations, a game plan to keep is close and not give he game away with turnovers is the highest probably option for winning. People don't like it when it does not work but to send Cassel out to sling it around like Brett Farve would be a guaranteed loss. They do need to run some pick plays for him on 3rd down.
10. I would love to see Gregory balling but I don't want to see Hardy off the field for that to happen. Yes, they can play Hardy at DT at times but if his best chance to get to the QB is at DE then I want him at DE. Gregory did play some snaps but those appeared very limited. Who knows if he is truly 100% recovered from the ankle injury anyway.
11. Doug Free had multiple bad plays again. The Cowboys had a great off-season except for retaining Free and Weed. It would be almost impossible for a rookie 3rd round pick that missed all of the off-season to come off of the PUP and do much, but if Green has anything he might be an upgrade at RT. It appears my dream of Leary getting healthy and Collins moving to RT is dead, at least for this year. Physically Collins compared to Free is like the Terminator compared to PeeWee Herman.
