News: DMN: Babe Laufenberg: Tap the brakes just a bit of the resurrection of Brandon Weeden's career

Question: What current NFL RBs might be available this offseason for Dallas to pick up?

Babe Laufenberg: We will have to wait and see on that one. But you see teams having success with guys drafted in the 3rd round or lower. Devonta Freeman was a 4th rounder for Atlanta and is going to the Pro Bowl. DeMarco Murray was a third rounder. So you don't need to go to the top of the draft to find a good running back.

It helps, though, if you actually draft one, especially in a year like last year that was considered to be loaded with them.

Nobody mentions the defenses.

Weeden's Passer rating on 10+ yard targets
with Dallas
vs NO (ranked 32nd) 122.3 (No Dez)

with Houston
vs Ten (ranked 31st) 148.3

with Dallas and Houston
vs everyone else 55.5

If Hoyer stinks it up on Sunday and/or in the playoffs, Weeden might be the most polarizing athlete in the state of Texas.

I've had it with al the Weeden talk.

I haven't hated a QB as much since Craig Morton and that's saying something. He's a hanger-oner with a strong arm with no balls who couldn't lead a cough to a cold. He does just enough to cash a check.

I'd rather go 0-16 with Kellen Moore all year long.

At this point nobody should want Weeden to succeed. He's not a Cowboy.

But there are some who onlyvwant him to fail so they can justify the opinion they had on him here in Dallas, despite the stats and the circumstances he was placed in.

If he does succeed, however, then its not about him, its about the way in which he was evaluated and the way it was determined that Cassel was a better choice.

Weeden was clearly better than Cassel but how much better. We may never know this season but if Hoyer can't play then things may get really interesting.

Not sure I put much stock in anything Babe has to say about backup QB's as he truly sucked as one. Our HC should know what makes a good backup QB as he was a great backup QB. Garrett apparently saw something in Weeden and thus kept him around but failed to realize the affect coaching has on QB's.
(I hope I did not just go over the limit for permitted post content for the Fan Zone)

Babe Laufenberg: Nothing surprises me when it comes to this team and drafting quarterbacks. They have prioritized it less than any team in the NFL. When you can count the number of QBs drafted in the last 25 years on one hand ( and they can) that tells you all you need to know. But yes, if I am in charge of the draft, I would have you a QB by the end of the second round

Babe, I hear by place you in charge of the draft.

Haha, I'm not sure if it belongs in the front office zone or roster zone

Jerry Jones signs Babes paychecks. He will say whatever he can to defend his boss.

I (hope) don't think anybody thinks Weeden is any good now. But he looked incompetent and borderline scared to throw the ball in our offense. Goes to Houston and he is making throws with confidence down the field. For me it actually has nothing to do with Weeden, but everything to do with our offensive coaching staff

Because he was a subpar QB means he doesn't know what it takes to play the position?

Lets just say I put more stock in Garrett picking QB's than Babe. Of course picking them is not all there is to a QB being good. The rest of it depends on the coaching staff. Weeden is the perfect example.

Note: That is the simple version and the way I see it. I could say a lot more but I truly am not sure what I can or cannot post in the fan zone. I do not want my posting privileges revoked.

Weeden plays with fear in his eyes. Good riddance.
