Just say NO to QB at #4

Very astute post and I've heard the same thing - that this class of QB's are not big time franchise guys - yet. However, it doesn't mean they can't be or won't eventually be but in other years they would not be this high. The frenzy of QB's in the NFL is like chum in the water. Only about half the league has a chance to win with the QB's they have so the pressure to find one is immense thus raising the stock of every player who had a decent college career.

As I've said before, Cleveland might take Wentz not necessarily because they think he's that awesome as compared to other overall number one picks - but because they can't afford not to find out.

Although I think Romo will be fine for a couple more years I can see the same logic applied to us.

You're right, they can't afford not to for sure. Cleveland may see Wentz as "their big guy." Big body kid to go along with the other bigs in their division, Big Ben and Flacco. They may have the mentality of "Wentz will be our Big Ben."

What is scary to me is if it does look like we want to go for a QB, Cleveland takes Wentz, San Diego takes Goff (California kid to sell to the fan base for the future) and then we're left stuck. Then it forces Dallas to trade down into the scenario laid out by the original poster. It wouldn't be awful or the end of the world but I'm sure many would be left in a sour mood about it.

Have you seen the QB's in college now? Watson and Kaaya are the best two..they make Goff, Lynch and Wentz look like the 83 draft class, Elway, Marino, Kelly..

No one drafts a QB in the top five picks to sit behind a franchise QB for 2-3 years or longer.

Jimmy Johnson nearly did something like that. When he drafted Aikman, he knew he was a rookie who was not ready and the team wasn't very good. He considered keeping Danny White and letting him start another year, but White was done due to a wrist injury that could not properly heal up. I remember Johnson's exact quote when asked about starting a rookie quarterback. He said, "We'll play the cards we have." He would have preferred a veteran for that first year, one that Aikman could have learned behind. Tom Landry drafted Roger Staubach, who, as a Heisman winner, certainly would have been one of the top five picks in the draft were it not for his Navy commitment. What did Landry do with this first-round talent? He sat him behind Craig Morton for two years. In Tampa Bay, Steve Young sat behind Steve DeBerg at first.

The team has the choice between picking up a free agent like Manziel or RG3 or of filling the position in the draft. Or we could hang on to Cassel. None of those prospects sound very good, IMO. Paxton Lynch is showing some good skills, albeit skills that need to be honed. There is no rule that says you can't draft a QB in the top 5 and then sit him at first. In fact, that's the old school way of doing it. It's only been relatively recently that guys like Andrew Luck and Ben Roethlisberger have come in to start immediately. If it's in the best interests of your team, you do it. Manziel, most of us agree, is a lousy prospect. RG3 I might be able to live with if he came in with a great attitude and worked hard. If the team went with him, I would want us to draft a marquee defensive player. But to me, Lynch or Goff look better than RG3. Is there a QB you want in the 2017 draft? I'm not saying your ideas are foolish -- we have respectful disagreement here. You must know the team can't continue kicking the can down the road indefinitely. At some point soon we need Romo's successor and not just a backup. I just want to understand your thought process. If not now, when does the team go after the successor?

The #4 pick really is a blessing and a curse.... lots of guys are going to be available that can have a big and immediate impact. but this team has needs at quite a few positions... who do you go with?! lol

Ok... What does he physically lack then?

You said "freak talent" - That would mean he has something that is either never seen or rarely seen in the NFL. YOU made this claim, you need to provide what makes him a "freak talent". This supposed freak is still being questioned by many scouts. He is not an Andrew Luck or Cam Newton type prospect.

Depends on the free agency approach. If we get aggressive and get a few starters, we draft for the future franchise qb. If we are passive, we draft a day one starter.

And I would say he is more physically talented than Luck and he isn't as athletic as Cam but has more arm talent.

Still awaiting a convincing argument these guys are the real deal.

All I keep reading is "They are QBs, draft them".

You might want to ask the question after draft day. Scouts know more than these posters . QBs will be drafted high as usual:

I was against it at first but I'm leaning more towards qb now. Dallas is a long ways away from competing for a sb. Might as well try get the future qb. Romo could be done next year we don't know for sure. But I'm in for going all in for romo but don't see them getting to the big dance the next 2 or 3 years no matter what they do.

So how are we a long way ? A year ago we were a Murray fumble from a championship game. Bs

That was because dallas had a perfect season and still couldn't get there. Everything went there way. If Romo was healthy all of this season dallas might not have beat the skins out for the east.

Great post, but Big Ben was drafted to sit behind Mattox, not to play his rookie year. Mattox went down early in the year, and his back up Charlie Batch took over but suffered an injury in his first start. Ben came in and never relinquished his job. The plan was to have Ben he the third stringer his rookie year.

sign rg3, he cant be worse than a rookie qb. At least rg has played and sat and watched games. Use the 4 pick on lb or secondary help, or trade down a few spots and collect picks. Grab a QB next year. Yes Jerry I would like some more kool-aid:flagwave:

Grab a QB next year when it will cost three years of draft picks.
