My post SR bowl mock v.4

He's restricted because his first yr was spent inactive so he didnt get any credit for 2012

Works out well for Dallas. Qualify him and then trade him or maybe another team will step up and sign him and the Cowboys will get a pick out of it.

I would think any team would take Gurley if he was dropped in their lap.

But the Cowboys certainly did not move up to get him.

FWIW I think Gurley is a better back than Elliot, hence another reason I wouldn't take Elliot at #4.

Me either i wouldnt cry about it if they did but i wouldnt love it. In my mock i have them trading down to 9. Still IDK if i can see that there.

Dallas will put a Rd2 tender on him. I think a low Rd2 team could bite. Leary is too good to be a backup. He could start on 31 teams, not 32 because he couldnt start in Dallas lol

The other problem with choosing a back like that is that their "shelf-life" is usually much lower than any other position... outside of say a QB, who isn't going to make it as a starter.

CB's, offensive lineman, linebackers... you can coax a 10-12 year career out of a talented player.

But at RB? If the guy's talented he's getting the ball 20+ times a game, game in and game out and he's simply going to wear out much sooner so you're having to replace him much sooner.

The list of "bell cow" backs that missed significant chunks of this season is eye-opening.

I'm firmly in the camp of RBBC. Get good backs (not great) and give them the ball 10-12 times a game. If one gets hurt, then you can lean on the other for more carries.

the list of issues is endless....

1. breaks cap. we aren't alloting huge dollars at RB. drafting at 9 eats 4m a year. that's what we offered murray before we paid 2-3m to mcfadden.
2. you don't upgrade the positons on the team performing best when the worst positions are why you are on 4 wins. --this is like a student bringing up their 87 in chemistry instead of the 59 in math.
3. rb shelf life which you ably state.
4. player access. every fa rb wants to come to dallas. you don't piddle on that by using your best draft resource in 30 years at the position. quality fa rb are available every off-season --forte/lamar miller this year.
5. AP and LT won pitifully few playoff games combined. Barry Sanders won pitifully few playoff games. Todd Gurley and the best DL in football couldn't make the playoffs.
6. RBs are not a core position. You don't draft kickers and the like day 1. RB are not much higher on the list than kickers. top 15/top 20 somewhere in there has to the lid for running backs.

Dallas had exclusive FA rights last year and could have signed him long-term but chose not to.

It is shocking how badly UDFA get hosed by this system but he is a RFA apparently. Even being on his 3rd contract. --that should be illegal.
Still Dallas would have to offer him a 2.5m deal which is a 500% raise to be a back up and means you have one seriously pissed off player.

From other team's perspectives paying the going rate plus a draft pick for a Guard seems like a poor business. They can't just negotiate with Dallas; they have to make Leary happy too.

If I were Dallas I'd tag him right of first refusal to see what he got offered on the open market. If it is low enough I might keep him as a 6th OL. If not that role goes to Bern who can play OG/OC.

But I don't think I'd try to bend a guy over the barrel who protects my QB.

they chose not to because they didnt have to, teams arent in the business to spend money just because. I really think Leary will be paying somewhere else this yr and Dallas will have a pick for it.

Daks game has improved alot in terms of passing. I could see Dallas wanting to copy SEA and CAR style in QB. Thats smashmouth offense with a strong dual threat QB.

Only if they change coaching staff would that happen.

As I stated above he is intriguing, but he would be Qcar 2.0 with this staff. Now give me a Gus Malzahn? Now we're talking!

Dak is intriguing. I heard Drew Pearson a couple of weeks ago say he is his top QB.

Drew Pearson don't know squat when it comes to evaluating players.

Some of the stuff he says in the media drives me crazy.

Great player but he can't evaluate talent.

I think Dak is a far better QB prospect than what Carter ever was.

Look up Carter's college stats– the guy was a 50% completion QB... I was stunned at the time when the Cowboys selected him. From Staubach to White to Aikman... Cowboy QB's had a reputation for accuracy... Quincy? Ugh. Dak had a 66% completion percentage this year.

Dak strikes me as being much brighter... Yeah, like who isn't brighter than Carter? LOL!

I think Carter was the better athlete... but Dak is a far better football player.

I'd have no issues if the Cowboys took him in the 4th round.

People need to stop acting like Church is getting cut. There is no chance of it happening. He has been underpaid up until last season and we aren't cutting our best safety for a measly amount of cap space , when we have NOTHING behind him!

Like it overall. Really like the Elliott, Rankins & Schobert picks. Vannett is also solid. Prescott is intriguing given his pretty solid arm & athletic ability...not to mention the improvements he made as a passer. He certainly has some tools. Not a fan of Oakman.

People need to accept the fact that we aren't cutting a team captain for a few million bucks saved. Church will be on the team and so will Wilcox to make up our SS duo.

Also what is your deal with Oakman? He can't play man. He's not a football player, just a big athlete. Poor guy is going to get 1 of his twig legs snapped in the NFL.

So turn Cash into a CB and draft a better DE than Oakman and I would actually really like this draft.

Isn't this year coming up Churches Las year on his contract

I wasn't sure until he named the big 3 all by name. He said he's better than all of them and you can get him in the 3rd. I can tell you the original 88 knows more about football then most on here.

I'm in for Wentz, but I can see the Cowboys thinking different.

Who I really want however hopefully comes out next year, and is better then all 3 IMO, Patrick Mahomes!

I only compared him to Qcar running this lousy offense. Dak would probably look the same, as opposed to running an offense that fits his strengths.

I'm not sure what to think about the offense... And let me qualify that, I don't think there's much of a problem with the running-offense. It's the passing offense.

And a lot of teams run a timing-offense when it comes to the passing game. What fouled up this one? The loss of Romo obviously affected it. The loss of Dez affected it. But what else? Can we pin all the blame on play-calling? Can we pin all the blame on receiver route-running? Can we pin all the blame on ineffective QB play?

I think it's easy to say, "Well the offense stinks."

But I think that's a gross oversimplification. Some of it is fine. Other parts obviously have issues. But all those things do not carry equal weight. Some carry more (or less) blame than others.
