Stop Talking About the Cowboys 'Window'

By Newy Scruggs

I get tired of hearing about the Cowboys approach to the 2016 NFL Draft should be about the club’s “window”. My twitter page gets loaded up with comments like that.

Or the whole take advantage of the “window” of quarterback Tony Romo argument for the justification of passing on a signal caller with the fourth overall pick.

4-12 teams don’t have a Super Bowl window.

Jason Garrett has coached the Cowboys for five full seasons and generated just one winning year.

That does not make a “window" friends.

Don’t give me the “If Romo and Dez are healthy” argument, either.

4-12 teams don’t have a Super Bowl window.
That may have been our record last year but we don't have a 4-12 roster. From the other thread here is the projected win totals for next year:

Panthers 10.5
Packers 10.5
Patriots 10.5
Steelers 10.5
Seahawks 10.5
Cardinals 9.5
Bengals 9.5
Broncos 9.5
Cowboys 9
Chiefs 9
Vikings 9

That looks like a possible Super Bowl window to me.

Windows are short sighted to talk about because in the NFL, the future is just as important as the present. So imagine a team that always talked about the future and how ridiculous that would be. You have to place great and equal importance on both.

Commanders fans are always talking about "next year"

With free agency and good drafting you should never have a window
If you draft well you can continue to be a playoff caliber team year in and year out barring major injuries killing you
The real key is moving from one franchise QB to the next. Get that right and you can continue to be a playoff team most years and if you are in the playoffs you got a shot

If a team is stout, with a good defense and offense and special teams, but does not have the quarterback that can consistently win games, all this blustering by Newey and those who think window is academic are sadly mistaken.

Follow the money. Who gets paid the most? Why?

That is your answer.

So for this team, without a pot to tinkle in beyond Tony Romo, and his health a moment to moment affair, the window is now, and maybe even shut completely. We won/t know that answer until we see how he fares through all 16 games and the play-offs.

If this team can make the play-offs.

There is a lot of assumptions this team is more like 2014 than 2015.

I say this team could be more like 2014 and still be 9-7 and miss the play-offs. Because no one knows for sure what the skill players on offense will do, and how the defense will improve to the point of being a top tier defense.

It is the murky futue that leaves us all guessing. But one thing for sure. Tony Romo misses six or seven games this next year, and that window will be damn near slammed shut for this franchise. And his career wasted.

But one thing is crystal clear. The right injury, and it could send Tony into retirement.

And then this franchise is screwed, blued, and tattooed as far as windows go.

the cowboys have been talking about next year for twenty years they were four and twelve with several players coming off injuries and haven't played much in the last year it will be a stretch for them to win 8 games

I would recommend 'stacking' some convenient excuses for next year

The author should be named scrubs. I want to hear what he had to say the Panthers when they were 7-8-1. He saw them being a SB contender? There really isn't Windows for a team, it more for a player, specifically QB. This is a pretty young team outside of a few positions and QB.

they projected over 9 wins last season they won four this team and organization is much closer to 4 and 12 than it is 12 and 4 until they can prove to me on a consistent year after year basis that they are yearly contenders I think what you have seen over the last five years is who they are.

Until we fix this defense their is no window their is no glass their is no window frame their is no windowsill their is no house with a window. Jerry fix this defense.

Yup, and we are always talking about winning now. And look where it has gotten both organizations.

The more I think about it, the more I am for drafting a QB in round 1, and use Free Agency for the "Romo window". The foundation on the Offensive and Defensive line is here. We can supplement with the rest of the draft.
