We can talk about what is "right" and "wrong" with the Academy all day long. Doesn't change this fact: The theater boycott hurt the film. That being the point.

Isn't that what the controversy surrounds? Oscars have a glaring hole in acknowledging "certain" films and actors all the time.

No, there is a racial controversy behind it and that's what I'm hoping this doesn't turn into.

I'm also not sure about this "acknowledging certain films and actors" - I'd say outside of biographical films and Meryl Streep, the Academy is diverse in film choice. People need tot realize, the voters are made up of over 7,000 people. All because something wasn't nominated doesn't mean it didn't get votes, it simply didn't get enough. At the end of the day, it's a popularity contest. I'd say, even being in the discussion is a good thing.

Actually that wasn't the point...
I felt the movie got overlooked, which in my opinion it did.. And you disagreed (very angrily I might add, and I don't know why)
And the excuse that they didn't "play with the big boys" is not a good one.
They qualified (which was proven), and didn't get recognized...

Again, I don't care because this is "lights, cameras, action" Deals get done for the award shows, at the award shows, & after the award shows..... It doesn't make a film good or bad... It means it wasn't recognized by that entity, which is unfair... but life isn't fair.

Heck, my favorite film this year was "Victoria", and that didn't get nominated for best foreign film... and guess what, doesn't matter, the film was still technically excellent, & unique. ("Embrace of the Serpent" was awesome as well)

The lesson here is its okay to disagree.... we can disagree and still respect each other.


The days of a Arri 435 with a Zeiss super speed prime,shooting 5279 on original pro series rig is over....
but its not like those tines were any different... This is all promotions... and the big dog makes the decisions...

Still haven't seen it yet. Had it on my watch list for months. Gotta get around to it soon. Big fan of Elba.

It was just a well made film... that's why I mentioned it... no false pretense, or overtones to my comments. It was beautiful, yet terrifying, symbolic, and powerful. And not only did Idris put in a good performance... but the kids... the darn kids! They had me from the opening scene.. just keep in mind the "tv scene"...lol

In my opinion its laughable that films like "Bridge of Spies" (not taking away from the craftsmanship, but it was so disney), The Martian (overrated), Mad Max (fun, but best picture?), & Brooklyn (good looking, but cliche).. Got nomination nods over "Beasts"..... But those guys have names as directors... and large production companies with promotional machines behind them..

Cary Fukunaga's time is coming though... he is a force in this business.

Yeah, I wasn't implying any false pretense. I thought Beasts look interesting months ago, before all this Oscar nonsense. I just never got around to it. My girlfriend is never in the mood for "heavy" movies. But good looks on that Victoria movie. We watch a lot of foreign films and I see it's on Netflix. And I've seen most of the Oscar films, besides The Revenant and Spotlight, and I thought most of them were garbage. In my opinion, the best big budget film of 2015 by far was Straight Outta Compton. Nothing came even close. I liked a lot of the 2015 Oscar films. Everything was good except Birdman.

I definitely wasn't accusing you of such... I just meant my initial post in this thread was honest in that "beasts" was overlooked.....

Matty Libatique visually killed "Straight Outta Compton".....
The movie was sensationalized, controversial, & misogynist..... but so was NWA!
It was enjoyable for sure...

Birdman was an odd movie to say the least. Can't remember the last time seeing a movie and not being sure if I liked it or not. I loved Keaton's character, I just didn't know *** was going on towards the end there.

Yeah, me too. I have almost every season on DVD. Saw Brothers Grimsby last night. Pretty funny.
