Joe Looney's contract by the numbers

Nothing to complain about with this - the Cowboys get a soon to be 26 year old player with starting experience and versatility at three positions (both G positions, C). The numbers are very team friendly.

Cowboys tried to poach restricted free agent C/G Tim Lelito from the saints also.

Tim Lelito turns down Cowboys, likely to return to Saints

Tim Lelito appears likely to stay with the New Orleans Saints after he turned down an offer from the Dallas Cowboys.

Lelito, a former Grand Valley State NCAA Division II All-American, told New Orleans TV station WWL that his offer from the Cowboys likely would have cast him in a reserve role.

"You have to weigh your options and it's a gamble," he said. "So you can go somewhere else and be a backup for a couple years with less money or you can try to go into a one-year tender and do the best you can and hopefully come out with a little better contract after it."

The restricted free agent has a one-year, $1,67 million offer from the Saints, who have the option to match any offer he would receive. He has until April 22 to make a decision.

Last season he started 13 games at left guard for the Saints.

I can't help but wonder if it was an either/or situation between the two players and whichever one took the deal first, got it.

Lelito would likely have cost more, probably in the Bernie range so I would assume he is a better talent. Saints had already tendered for 1 year what Looney got over two years.

Outstanding deal! The Cowboys got a versatile, young utility player at a bargain price. Kudos to the front office on this one!

We got Bernadeau's production at half the cost. Which a third of this forum will call a complete disaster.

As of the moment the Cowboys have $9.669 mil in salary cap space (per Spotrac).

One would think this would be considered a "Solid Signing"...but not really that big of a shocker really since they have been getting players for good prices.

For those waiting to call this a good signing or not until we got the numbers, you can now agree with us who said it was all along.

Anyone who thought Looney was getting big money or needed to see the numbers before agreeing that this was a solid signing just wanted to be different and complain and not give the front office their due.

Anyone saying this are trapped in their current personas by previous idiotic rhetoric. There is no room for conciliation and reasonableness.

Unfortunate.

Ya think?

Another "prudent" signing. A capable backup for a reasonable contract.

The nerve of those who wanted to see the deal before commenting on it.

I should have just parroted great deal the moment he was signed.
