Does Rolando McClain still want to play football?
Does Rolando McClain still want to play football?

Linebacker Rolando McClain hasn’t bothered to show up for much of anything for the Dallas Cowboys this offseason. This was the third straight year that McClain has pulled a disappearing act, so it shouldn’t be surprising that he didn’t magically appear on the team flight destined for Oxnard, California and training camp last Thursday afternoon.

That’s the world the Cowboys live in with McClain and it’s one the Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Ravens learned about when RoMac played for them. Those teams moved on from McClain and it’s well past time the Cowboys do the same.

This isn’t that complicated. Rolando McClain has made it clear he doesn’t want to play football, so why do the Dallas Cowboys keep trying to make him play?

The veteran linebacker hasn’t come out and officially retired or told the team he doesn’t want to play, but actions speak louder than words. McClain skipped OTAs, reluctantly showed up (and was out of shape) for mandatory minicamp, got suspended 10 games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy and lastly, decided not to join his teammates on the flight to begin the new season.

Does that sound like a guy who wants to play football?

McClain continues to disrespect and disappoint the team, yet the Cowboys refuse to release him. As good as he can be when he’s on the field, McClain’s shown that he doesn’t have the desire to be on it. McClain has already retired once, so it’s clear he has a pattern of walking away from the game.

The Cowboys will reason that salary cap repercussions are the sticking point in giving up on the McClain project, but that makes little sense. The team wouldn’t take a large cap hit if they released Rolando and they would save much of the $2 million game day roster bonuses and all of the $1 million playing time bonus, so Dallas would save in those areas. Using money as an excuse when McClain doesn’t want to play football is a bad reason for not cutting him?

Rolando McClain’s time with the Dallas Cowboys should come to an end; he’s shown no desire to play and the team should let him go. There’s no reason to force the issue for a guy who hasn’t rewarded the Cowboys for their faith.

It’s time for a breakup.

He wants a paycheck and like any career lazy person, knows how to work the system. Cut him off now for his own good. Free up his money to go to players that want to play and will get better with more playing time. It's a shame, all the talent in the world...zero brains.

At this point, does anyone care...get rid of this bum. I used to be in his corner. And could even understand why they would keep him until week 11. Though was hoping we wouldn't need him then, as someone would step up and show we don't need him. But now, no way, he needs to go.

Cowboys by holding him in purgatory get a big chunk of his signing bonus back and alot less cap hit next year...doing the prudent thing considering he doesn't take up a spot on 53 for 10 weeks

What cap hit next year? It's a one-year deal.

So you're saying if we cut him after week 10 we save money?

Well we dont know all the details with Ro or RG, so best to let the cowboys decide on all this.
I dont think either one hurts the team by not being here at this point, and it could be a good thing, if they find a
good player in one of the replacements.
They are not helping the team either, so fans want to cut them to please themselves.

No matter what Ro probably wont play this year, I guess it is possible but unlikely, I am thinking he might fail another test
and he knows it, so why show up for anything. I dont think he cares about the money, but would like to play, he just cant
let go of his habit.
I think he might also be bipolar, and needs to be treated for that.

I don't think he ever cared to play football but he sure enjoyed the perks. I'm not sure the Cowboys will ever get their money out of him so they should cut their loss and let him go.

"Cowboys by holding him in purgatory get a big chunk of his signing bonus back and alot less cap hit next year...doing the prudent thing considering he doesn't take up a spot on 53 for 10 weeks"
yeah if they cut him now he gets more money and all of his signing bonus, so better to wait till after suspension is up.
I think the effect on the cap is better if they wait too.
Each week his money will be credited back to the cap, or off the cap.

many details, concerning money and his personal issues, are kept from the public.
So I dont really care what they do with him, and the media is just using it to fan the fire, and get clicks etc.

I dont care, it is next man up, and lets get to the games~~!!!!!!!!
We have such a great coaching staff, they should be able to deal with the missing players no problem!

I've had about enough of Rolando McClain. He's a slap in the face to all the fans who have a passion for this game, but didn't have the talent and measureables to make a career out of it. All that size, speed, and talent... if I could only put my mind in his body for a game. I may not kow what the hell I was doing but I'd do it 100 MPH with a big ole smile on my face.

I curse the football gods for not making me a little bit taller and faster.

Too bad they cant get these 2 guys a scrip for some "medical" marijuana !

Yes but the knuckleheads on this board don't get that. You can explain it over and over but nothing penetrates thick skulls

This was pretty much the narrative long before Dallas brought him aboard. I'm actually stunned the club got as much as it did from the guy.

I've had enough of McClain when his house he couldn't sell suddenly caught fire via Arson, there is always something going on with this guy, he is more trouble than he's worth....clearly Football isn't anywhere close to being top of the list in his life, cut him and move on already!

This means that somebody is going to have to step up for Dallas. With McClain declining to be involved with the "voluntary" off eason activities, the Cowboys were given some opportunities to try some combinations out. It seems like they have found a grouping or two that they think will work out and allow them to keep Sean Lee on the outside. No doubt Rod Marinelli and Matt Eberflus have some contingency plans locked away that involve moving the former Penn State star back to the middle, but for now it looks like those are being kept under lock and key.

"Does Rolando McClain still want to play football" is poorly worded. While the overwhelming majority of players demonstrate their desire to play football through commonly acceptable committed effort, McClain's motivation appears centered primarily upon personal economic gain through minimal labor. The want is there but it is pitifully small compared to most players'.

Too bad these guys would rather smoke weed instead of making millions playing a game they say they love.....
well rolando got 20 mil G from oakland, and I think he still has a good portion of that, so he isnt hurting for money.
Randy is the one who is really stupid as he has not made much yet.

He doesn't want to play. He prolly wants to smoke and fish, maybe open up a BBQ joint by a lake with one of his peeps. Wake up when he wants, and chillz.
