Prescott was able to lead the offense to a 56-yard field goal by Dan Bailey in situational work. Prescott completed 7 of 10 passes on the drive but had one that would have been intercepted if not for the effort of wide receiver Brice Butler to knock the ball free from Morris Claiborne. Prescott was able to set up the field-goal attempt with a nice out route to undrafted tight end Austin Traylor.

Showers, who spent most of last year on the practice squad playing positions other than quarterback, had the two best throws of the day.

They came in seven-on-seven work. The first was a 20-plus-yard completion to undrafted wide receiver Chris Brown on a back shoulder throw. The other was a long touchdown pass to Gavin Escobar in which the throw was perfectly weighted over the defender to allow the tight end to come down with the grab.

In team and seven-on-seven drills, Prescott completed 16 of 21 passes, while Showers completed 8 of 12.

On to the observations:

  • Showers’ work in team drills did not go so well, but he was not given much help by his offensive line. He would have been sacked on the first play, scrambled out of trouble on his second before flipping the ball away, and may have crossed the line of scrimmage on his last attempt as he was flushed from the pocket.

For those wondering about the status of rookie TE Rico Gathers as he makes the transition from basketball to football, the undrafted Traylor took snaps ahead of the sixth-round pick. Gathers has miles and miles to go before he is ready.

PS here we come.

Another TE gem!

LoL:

Because the Cowboys were low on arms with Romo sitting and Kellen Moore hurt, Jason Garrett took some turns throwing passes in drills. In work between backs and tight ends against linebackers and safeties he had consecutive passes intercepted by Mark Nzeocha and Kavon Frazier. Come on, Coach, remember: the ball, the ball, the ball.

Queue the Showers is the best option posts. Just like last year, people at this time wanted Showers over every other QB. Well, actually maybe he should have been...LOL....
I didn't think he was an answer last year, and I still don't this year. I do want to see how he has progressed, if he has truly progressed.

They still should just get off their high QB horse, and bring a QB in asap.

Yep. But that's an ok accomplishment given where he's come from.

Traylor's maybe a more interesting player, anyway.

I wasn't impressed with him last year, and I haven't seen him yet this year. Between him and Prescott, though, I'd give him the nod right now. Just because I don't want to rush Prescott. We 100% need to add a real QB2 at some point before the end of camp, no matter what.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say
  • Showers will not be in the NFL in 2 seasons
  • Rico Gathers will not be with the Cowboys next year

Neither Showers or Prescott are the answer for the Cowboys as the primary backup this season or future starter after Romo who's career end is less than two years away......

How do you do it? That must be some amazing crystal ball you have to be able to conclude after only a few practices. Were you also the one who predicted Tom Brady winning 4 SBs? How about your expert opinion on Goff, Wentz and Lynch. This should be good.

Anyone else think this Showers kid has something? I was impressed by him last summer sounds like he's doing very well again. Hope we keep him around and maybe in 2 years him and Dak can battle for the starting job

It only works with the Cowboys. Take whatever they're doing, predict it won't work and they should have done the opposite. Say it sagely like you have the wisdom of long experience. If your credentials get challenged, quickly say that what really bums you out is that they've completely wasted the careers of Tony Romo and Jason Witten, two truly great Cowboys players. Pretty much that covers all your bases.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like the scouts like him more than the coaches do. I wasn't impressed with him last season (he was just about what I expected him to be, though I do like his style of play), but I know he definitely has his fans here. I'm looking forward to seeing what the year did for him, though.

Showers has decent pedigree, he was at one point supposed to be starting QB at TAMU. I'd think this is his year to show up or get cut.
