Great pick in Prescott, but we will have to score 30+ points per game to win

I, like everyone else, was sitting there mesmerized, watching Dak Prescott have a perfect game his first time playing vs another team. (The two drops weren't his fault). I love what I see as the future franchise QB of this team took total control of the offense. I also really like what I saw from our RB corps, whether it was Morris or Jackson or whoever. However, I also saw the other side of the ball. Going into the past few drafts, this team saw it too, but did little about it. Sure, they drafted knuckleheads, like Gregory & Lawrence, and LBs that couldn't play until the following season, but nothing even close to a Super Bowl winning defense. (See: Broncos, Seahawks, Giants, ect.)

Looking at the Jags' draft, I can't help wish that their first 4 picks: Jalen Ramsey, Miles Jack, Yannick Ngakoue, & Sheldon Day, were ours & vice-versa. We would still have a very solid RB corps, but our secondary would be much better off. Even after that, the Jags drafted two more DEs. Now, THAT'S how you build a SB defense. LB Jack is already playing, while our LB, Jaylon Smith, is out all season. Our franchise QB is THIRTY SIX years old. You don't wait until later to give him a defense. Now, the only way we can sack the QB is to manufacture a pass rush with blitzes, leaving a terrible secondary susceptible to big plays.

This year, we will have to score 30+ points per game, because our D will be giving up 28/game. That's not, nor ever will be, a formula for a championship trophy. Stop drafting injured players in the first 3 rounds, & select defensive players the first five rounds next year, like the Jags did, & maybe we can begin to build a defense worthy of a ring. I just hope our QB can last that long.

I would rather not be the Jaguars..
I didn't say that. I said that with their draft, & the selection of Fowler Jr. last year, their defense will be much better than ours this year. Watching them Saturday, so will their team.

I agree if the defense does not fair better than an avg of 28 points a game we will not be winning a lot of games. Myself I'm not ready to say the defense will be that poor. heading into 2014 the defense had little talent but played very well allowing an avg of 22 points a game and 2nd in the NFL in turnovers.

it wont be long be for the Zeke vs Ramsey debate will be put to rest. I cant say that yet about Smith vs Jack

Can't wait for it. A guy that never got thrown to in College that you hold in as high regard as Deion Sanders (good luck) vs. a guy that's just a smart, 3 down football player with power and speed that will be about 70% of our offense.

That's just the point. Romo doesn't have that stud LB that Bortles has because of poor drafting. There's no debate regarding Zeke & Ramsey. It's all about need. We had a good RB corps & one of the worst CB corps, so, all things being equal, like their talent, you take the guy who can help you at a greater position of need.

I think our FO has been expecting Marinelli to perform nothing short of miracles with the talent or lack there of we have on the defensive side of the ball.
The FO has also "hit" on more picks/FA offensively (whether by skill or luck) which has helped compensate for our offensive coaching challenges. This was very apparent last year.
My opinion, we can compete during the regular season with what we presently have (team/coaching), however to get to the next level (Championship level) we're going to need significantly more talented personnel on defense. The defensive of the ball is where most championships are won.

The problem with drafting Ramsey is we still can't get to the QB. Even a top draft pick can't cover all day. So Scandrick, Carr, Claiborne all just about = Ramsey in the absence of qb pressure. At least with the way we picked we will get some mileage from our pick.

Now if you fix the dline we can have a discussion.

Im not sure, the combo of Collins and Tapper may be better than their 3rd and 4th rd picks, I'd certainly at least like to see them play a little bit before we come to that conclusion

For guys like you it will be put to rest. Because no doubt Zeke will rush for 1500 yards and 15 TD's this year in a great offense behind the best line in football.

But that debate wont be fairly played out for 3-5 years when Ramsey has a chance to get set in that defense. One guy is instant/short term gratification while the other will take a year or two to get going and then he is all about 10 years of production.

Any RB starting this year would be a big part of our offense. See Murray two years ago and McChicken last year.

"For guys like you" what's that supposed to mean? are you the savior? the football god? I don't think so...you can agree or disagree with my opinion or you can simply move along. get it? got it? good

While I definitely don't believe having a strong running game fixes everything it does help the defense a great deal and will put them on the field less which should help keep the score down. You have to be able to run in the 4th quarter - that is the biggest key because if you can't run in the 4th you will lose with our defense

Zeke is a complete player that they weren't. A little more upside, I'm hoping.
Murray was a complete player , and McF did good considering we had no passing game when he played.

Elliot is ...... well we wont know till he plays, hopefully he is good , real good, but it is possible he wont be as good
as expected.

I wouldn't say we had the worst secondary, we just had some injuries ie Scandrick, & Claibourne. you add that along with Byron Jones to FS, and i see our secondary as a strength.

you make a good point , but it is too late to build a great defense to help tony, by the time it is built he could be too old.

Jerry and his boy, have focused on "bargain" Defensive players like gregory,Ro, and J. Smith,
and injured players like smith and green and even crawford.
Our defense, hopefully wont be so bad as to allow 28 a game though.
In past 2 years, the main problem has been the 4th qtr, where our defense cant seem to stop anyone.
That to me could be a coaching and scheme issue ??

Look at the NO game we lost, they scored on a play where brees saw a rookie player sent in late, and took advantage of that.
The cowboys should have called timeout after the injury, so that to me was a coaching mistake.
Knowing when to blitz and when not to, and also being effective in blitzing is something the cowboys are not too good at.
Again more of a coaching issue than personnel ??
