Extend Butler now?

I think Terrance Williams is about to have a huge year. He will be an interesting decision.

The Cowboys signed Miles Austin to an extension thinking we needed to tie him up early to save money.

It ended badly. And Butler has done even less than Austin did when he signed.

yea, Butler has very little incentive to sign an extension now. hell, if Terrence WIlliams or Dez go down, he *could* become another Laurent Robinson.

he may have a huge year, but imo, you can't resign everyone and we have far too many resources tied into the offense. he's imo a luxary we just shouldn't splurge on.

why would you want to extend Butler now? He has to go out and prove something and I would say the same for T Williams. I will say with Williams he takes a lot of BS but he makes plays as a #2. Butler to this point has not. He is always injured and it would make no sense to invest into Butler until he actually proves he can produce and stay on the field.

Remember when Hardy made a few plays in the Patriots game and there were calls to extend him? You shouldn't be surprised by this.

It all depends what you pay for them. Right now, we've got two guys we can play against each other. If you can get one of them to blink for a reasonable veteran contract, you don't need to fill two WR positions with newbies next offseason. If you have to overpay either guy, obviously, forget it.

Of the two, Williams is the one you'd like to get done on an affordable deal. If he's at all worried about losing snaps to Butler, he might give you a discount you won't get next offseason. Getting the money early, and locking in the playing time might be worth it to both him and us.

Different type of player, but I can see Butler having a Larent Robinson type impact for us this season. He's gonna make some big plays if he stays healthy and Romo stays healthy too lol.

Good points. Terrance would probably be easier to get done. He's younger, has more invested with the team, and went to school at Baylor. He is probably in love with the area.

OK, now for my first Parnell reference since I've started posting again...
They could have signed Parnell prior to the 2014 season for probably half or less of what he ended up getting paid in FA and likely less than what they paid Free.

Now you are officially back!!

Miles Austin was given an extension after he went to the Pro Bowl, and he went back the year he signed it.

Butler wasn't even a lock to make the team coming in training camp, call it a hunch but the Cowboys want to see more than one Preseason game before they hand out millions of dollars.

I see no reason to rush and resign a player that hasn't even shown his ability to start over the body catcher.
lol...love the body catcher comment... Wouldn't it be interesting to let both play out the season and just play them against one another?

CBZ 2015: We lost an entire season because we didn't have a quality backup QB!!!

CBZ 2016: Who needs a quality backup RB? Cut that bum!

I think the most likely scenarios for DMC are a trade for a conditional pick or the six week PUP, but you don't cut a starting caliber RB on a whim.

So far, Butler has been sort of a fringe player, with very little production. We can see from the preseason why the Cowboys thought enough of him to trade a late round pick for him last year. The potential is there, and now we have also seen production from him in the preseason, making this a potential breakout year.

I see him in sort of the same situation we had with Murray before his breakout campaign in 2014. We could have extended Murray cheaply in 2013, and still had him on the roster in 2015.

I would approach Butler about a relatively cheap extension, which would benefit the Cowboys greatly, and give Butler some security which he doesn't currently have. Terrance Williams is also in a contract year, so we may not be wiling to give him what he wants to stay, especially if the Cowboys have a very good offensive year.

If we lose both Butler and Williams the next offseason it would force our hand next year. We will probably not want to spend a first or second round pick on a receiver next year, or the salary that high of a draft pick will get as a number two receiver, or go through rookie growing pains normally associated with a rookie receiver.

If the Cowboys project him to have a break out year like I do ....... then now is the time to do the cheap extension.

No, we need the entire cap to extend Dak before LA sneaks in and puts Goff in his bunk and takes away our future!

My real response to the question is why now?

Is that really a serious question?

I honestly think Dallas has set themselves up well to sign Butler if Williams bails.

You have a good point. He would likely sign for cheap now, but if he breaks out this season, he will be expensive to re-sign.

The problem is that he has some quirky personality issues and might be the type of guy that does not do well once he gets paid.

And we would have had half the player at half the price.

It's not a bad thing to let unproven players earn a new contract. You generally can expect to get the most out of them when they have the most to lose.
