Extend Butler now?

So far, Butler has been sort of a fringe player, with very little production. We can see from the preseason why the Cowboys thought enough of him to trade a late round pick for him last year. The potential is there, and now we have also seen production from him in the preseason, making this a potential breakout year.

I see him in sort of the same situation we had with Murray before his breakout campaign in 2014. We could have extended Murray cheaply in 2013, and still had him on the roster in 2015.

I would approach Butler about a relatively cheap extension, which would benefit the Cowboys greatly, and give Butler some security which he doesn't currently have. Terrance Williams is also in a contract year, so we may not be wiling to give him what he wants to stay, especially if the Cowboys have a very good offensive year.

If we lose both Butler and Williams the next offseason it would force our hand next year. We will probably not want to spend a first or second round pick on a receiver next year, or the salary that high of a draft pick will get as a number two receiver, or go through rookie growing pains normally associated with a rookie receiver.

If the Cowboys project him to have a break out year like I do ....... then now is the time to do the cheap extension.

What kind of "security" would Butler really get in such a deal? The guaranteed money would be nominal. If I'm in Butler's shoes, I'm betting on myself.

I'd offer deals to Williams and Butler, and see if one of them bites. Implicitly, the guy under the long term contract will probably end up getting the reps in what would otherwise be an audition season for NFL FA.

Neither guys is likely to take it, though. Tony's going to make them both more money than we're going to want to pay next season and beyond.

You have a good point. He would likely sign for cheap now, but if he breaks out this season, he will be expensive to re-sign.

The problem is that he has some quirky personality issues and might be the type of guy that does not do well once he gets paid.

OK, now for my first Parnell reference since I've started posting again...
They could have signed Parnell prior to the 2014 season for probably half or less of what he ended up getting paid in FA and likely less than what they paid Free.

Welcome back X........but I wouldn't rush to extend Butler......WRs are plentiful in the draft

Thanks.

Yes, it appears that it's a good year for WRs in the draft but with both T. WIlliams and Butler as free agents I don't want to have to force a pick for need.

I wouldn't give Butler a big contract, but I would check to see if he would sign a really team friendly deal. T. Williams is going to be expensive even if he just performs the same as the past 2 seasons.

Even if Williams or Butler get re-signed, I'm always open to adding an elite WR in the draft. We saw in Dallas and Green Bay what happens when the #1 WR is for an extended period of time.

Bryce Butler has averaged 213 yards receiving and 0.66 TDs per season.

He certainly has potential, however, that potential has been there each of the 3 years he has been in the league, however, for whatever reason, he hasn't been able to pull it altogether.

He'll be 27 years old by the end of the season -- its now or never.

He's made some plays in preseason that's all it takes for some here to anoint a player.
Remember when Hardy made a few plays in the Patriots game and there were calls to extend him? You shouldn't be surprised by this.

Not surprised at all it's a common occurrence here. All it takes is a couple of plays for some to want to lock up a player.

There is one other thing in Butler's favor. He appears to be one of Dak's favorites.
