Tony still has 19.6m in Dead Money after this year.....if he does retire it will have to finessed to minimize the salary cap impact......if he waits until next June it would be the same as June 1st cut and split the cap hit into 10.7m dead in 2017 and 8.9m dead in 2018.....that would be workable and actually save a ton off his projected hits if he stayed
The cap hit to keep him would be 24.7M. The dead money without him is 19.6M. They save 5.1M of cap space.

They only owe him for 2016 which is 8.5M salary.

Dead-money is not owed to him.

In 2017 they free up 5.1M in cap space without him on the team.

2017 cap hit:
Romo on the team - 24.7M
Romo cut - 19.6M

Then I guess 2017 looks like the year of 'difficult decisions'.

sickening cap management, literally adds insult to injury.
the Dead Money was money well spent over the years and is great cap management.....spreading out the larger cap hits and paying more when the cap is higher is smart...all top QBs get paid and all have to be eventually accounted for on the cap

If I could somehow spin this dreadful news, I would say this gives us an opportunity to see if we truly have our future QB in Dak. I thought we were an 8 or 9 team with Romo playing. i didn't think there was a chance he would start all 16 games but I absolutely didn't expect this

This speeds up our obvious choice to finding the heir apparent QB

Maybe it's not such a bad thing

I don't understand this line of thinking from some fans. Either you can play or you can't play in this league. So far Dak has shown that he can likely play.

Plus there are quite a few recent examples of rookie QBs who have immediately come in and played well.

Dak has an outstanding supporting cast around him. I don't expect him to perform like Romo in his prime but I could easily see him put up a season similar to Russell Wilson's 2012 season.

I'd be on cloud 9 if he followed Wilsons progression.

Not a cap expert but my read of that is it is still a bad situation. $20M of cap room for a player that isn't on the team where that money isn't available for anyone else.

We saw the talent level last year without Romo, presumably they'd need to upgrade a number of positions to get better quick -- and that $20M would be unavailable.

Am I understanding that right?

Some on here are absolutely giddy at the prospect of Romo being out half the season and are wishing for more. I hope karma pays them a visit.

That's a valid point.

If he can't hurt that part of his back further and a shot before the game reduces the pain...

Well he could play.

Ok, but is that totally unaffected if he retires versus him being cut/released?

retiring does not effect the cap. when a player retires, a team will move them to the retired/reserved list to retain their rights, but if we are ready to move on, we release him (probably post june 1).

That's today's NFL.

A starting QB is going to get a ridiculous amout of money and if he sinks... Well.

I understand how disheartening it is to see Tony in this same situation again, but, what's even more disheartening... is the lack of support everyone seems to have here for him now.

I get that everyone does want to see him on the field for us, but, in all actuality, can we not lose sight of what it is that really happened? Whether or not the case is that he is getting older and more fragile (while I do see this), the fact of that matter is, is that I'm pretty sure none of us have ever seen a specific hit like that...

Try having 250lbs of Cliff Avril jamming your back directly into the ground while sliding at full speed, and I'm pretty sure any normal being should have at least something wrong with their back. It's nearly a miracle it's not anything even more than a minor compression fracture.

For Christ's sake, people, he doesn't even need surgery on this injury, and it's completely unrelated to the previous injuries he's had.

While I do understand it's easy to see how this could be the beginning of the end - I don't like to see it that way.

For everyone who doubts Tony out there, I'd like to keep faith in our boy, knowing that he's one of toughest in the game and once he does come back (which he will), he's going to be better than ever. If there was never a fluke hit such as this, and he went through a full season this year and took us into the playoffs, we would all be saying he does most likely have another 3 years in him - And I still believe that to be true. Quit saying Romo's going to retire, because he's not.

As long he lets it heal properly, our O-line protects him as they should, and there aren't any mortifying, ridiculous plays that somehow take him out for the season again... We (He) will be fine.

I say Dak goes 3-3, Romo comes back, goes 7-3, and we win the NFC East to get back into the playoffs again above the Commanders at 9-7.

Have a little faith, people!

Go Cowboys.

I hear 6-10 weeks

Cowboys' medical told Bryan Broaddus 4-6 weeks.

A broken bone requires 6 weeks to heal.

Tony Romo reportedly has a compression fracture of the L1 vertebrae. It doesn't require surgery, you put on a back brace and let it heal.

October 6th is six weeks, which is before the week 5 home contest against Cincinnati.

The team has a bye week 7, so the week 8 home game against Philly may be the likely target.

No. For any guy who would be willing to stand around being a $20 million backup/non-player just to collect his money.

I wouldn't blame him. He earned that contract and sacrificed his body and health for it. If you dont think he will have chronic pain than youve never injured your back. He put the team first and fought through injury his whole career. Fact is hed play week 1 if they let him. Him being a back up and refusing to retire would most likely be driven by his desire for one more chance, not greed. Hes been a class act and a joy to watch and root for. Ill always respect him for what hes done here. Its a shame, he deserved better. I cant help but think back to him coming out of greenbay and crying with his family surrounding him. I love the game but more so I admire the man hes been while he represented.

Yep, not blaming the Cowboys front-office contract. I am just questioning a lot of the chatter I am seeing pointing to the 'cap savings' if Romo is gone.

The cap savings are outweighed, IMHO, by the massive amount of dead money.

Again, I am not a cap guy -- I don't fully understand all the implications.

Any rational fan knew Romo didn't have 5 years left in him. Regardless of what the eternal sunshine pumping owner insists.

Hopefully this is the end for him. I'm tired of holding my breath hoping that his rickety body can withstand routine sacks.

Not many Cowboy fans are rational especially on this board. I hope it's not the end for Romo but it does look like the beginning of the end.
