Zeke Elliott texts about passing drug tests?

Saw this a moment ago:

Thompson texted Elliott: “I know you’re stressed out, if you need me call me. Just do everything you can to pass your drug test tomorrow. You’ll be okay. I’m here for you”

To that, Elliott responded: “I’m gonna pass.”

In a subsequent text, Elliott wrote: “About to live in this sauna the next 24 hours.”

Elliott’s lead legal advisor, Frank C. Salzano, called the text exchange “a non story.”

“We are happy to move on to football and look forward to playing against the Giants,” Salzano said.

This text exchange, coupled with the Seattle visit, may be enough to put Elliott in the league’s substance-abuse program. Players do not necessarily have to fail a drug test to enter Stage 1 (intervention) of the program.

An NFL spokesman said the decision in a case such as Elliott’s is based upon the opinion of jointly appointed independent medical advisers by the NFL and NFLPA.
How did these text get out

Wait until MIke Florio writes about this in PFT. It will be there within 2 hours (now 11am EST)

Ugh, stop treating cannibis as HGH

You can fail the test 4 times before suspension and your aren't viewed as a cheater like with hgh.

JJ Watt is clearly using some type of steroid and he never gets caught.

If these guys get suspended for marijuana it's nobody's fault but theirs.

Agreed that its no body else's fault but their own. I still dont like it. But good point about failing 4 times.

I don't see the big deal is. The guy texting Zeke says I know your never and hope you pass and Zeke is quite confident in his response, I'm going to pass. The sauna thing could be related to his being over weight by a few pounds and trying to lose some... could have nothing to do with any type of drugs. But I doubt very seriously that NFL players his age don't smoke that stuff at least sometime. It seems to be the thing to do with the youth of today. At some point in the near future, the NFL is going to find itself in a very bad situation, they will either have 80% of the league in a substance abuse program and failing out of the NFL or they will have to make it legal.

I don't like it either.. It's a problem with our government and even if you don't use it then I think you can agree that tax payers shouldn't have to pay for their war against it. It's a gosh dang plant.

There is nothing in that exchange to be worried about. Nowhere does is come out that he actually used any illegal drug. Of course players are anxious about drug tests. They have a ton to lose and false positives are possible. There is also the fear that some supplement or medicine may contain a banned substance. Is sitting in a sauna for extended periods a proven method of passing drug tests? I suppose it could be but I have no idea and there are many reasons a professional athlete may want to use a sauna. All he has to say is that he was training hard at the time and was worried his protein shakes may contain something he didn't know about and that he used the sauna to loosen tight muscles after workouts.

Isn't there a period where players are allowed to do this stuff? I mean if people really believe that a lot of these players don't smoke you are fooling yourselves. These guys smoke and they smoke often.

If the texts are accurate, it's proof he's a drug user. Otherwise, people around him wouldn't be worried about Zeke being tested.

It's no surprise to me. And yes, he's a ticking time bomb. At some point, the team will be hurt by Elliott and his off field behavior. It's just a matter of when.

Maybe that's why Jerry won't trade McFaddon. He knows it too.

I think he'll be ok as long as he is smart about it.

I would say a high percentage of athletes in all sports use it and don't get caught and the NFL basically tells you when they are testing. It's not random at all unless you fail their previous test.

1) Who leaked the texts?
2) Why have fancy saunas and whatnot at the Star if the players shouldn't use them?
3) Aren't all players nervous before a drug test?

It's not proof of anything. He could be worried about supplements he was taking. There's no way to prove anything because the texts don't show anything. In fact, Zeke himself never states he is worried. The other person might be mistaken. Zeke states emphatically that he is confident he will pass.

I can't go into a lot of details....but all of us who thought all of these "non stories" cannot be true because of how tight a control his dad/mom have on him....kill that line of thinking. Like I said...cannot say much more than that...but they have lost almost all control after he got drafted.

Pot is a killer test-wise, lasts forever & masking detection is pretty sophisticated now. Unfortunately, it should be a bright line disqualification for any future candidate until the rules become more in-line with societal norms, IMO.

The texts were not leaked. They were found on his ex-girlfriend's phone as part of the investigation into the domestic abuse claims made by his ex-girlfriend against Elliott. They became part of public record at that point.

Maybe that's why the team is hedging with a dozen running backs?
